Need help with ideas for a Generals mod

Post by Laughing Mechanicus »

Recently I've started modding Generals Zero Hour, just as a little personal project I'm thinking of trying to add a third side. At the moment I'm considering adding the UK because a) It kind of fits with the ZH storyline, with Europe being attacked the UK would most likely have to sort out the continent and b) because I live there.

Now rather than do what most of the other mods I've seen that add the UK do (that is just plonk the modern British army in the game) I want to add a Generals style UK army - so one that uses "next generation" military technology along with analogues of current weapons.

But not being particularly current on next gen military gear I need some help coming up with ideas. They don't need to be something actually in development in the UK or elsewhere right now (think of the US particle cannon for example) or neccesarily even something particularly realistic (Chinas pure EMP weapons for example) they just need to be fun and fit in with the other armies.

Also ideas for a general "style" for the UK side would be good - so far I want them to be more infantry based than the US and China, and one of their main themes will be upgradeable units (for example you build a CVR(T) type APC, but it can be specialised into an anti-tank platform or a repair vehicle). Their hero unit would be an SAS commando (or a small squad of them as a single unit, if I can manage that) that calls in automated airstrikes (ala Boris from RA2 Yuri's Revenge), their construction unit would be an AVRE, supply collectors would be Landrovers etc etc...

Upgrades for basic SAS infantry unit

bursting charges (allows one to assult troops inside any building) <including hardened ones)\

Sniper Rifle: massive range 1 shot kills.

SAS should also get free paradrops as soon as you build an airfield

Spotting Laser: allows one to call in auto airstrikes/artillery missions

For the SAS I was considering making them the super weapon. You would call like any other superweapon and they would parachute in as a squad of 4 or 5 seperate guys, each one being a hero in their own right - so you'd have a sniper, anti-tank gunner, machine gunner, commander, sapper etc... each having a couple of special abilities specialised for different things.

Also in order to improve my familiarity with Generals editing I've just been fixing any bugs currently in it from a list I've found here. If anybody wants a copy of the mod I've made that fixesmost all the issues pointed out there then just ask.

Get Mi5 in it. Your special unit can be 007

(too silly right?)

Maybe a next generation harrier?

harriers with pop up attacks

Well i have been playing lots of dawn of war, and as you can have upgrades of different types on vehicles. Make your base infantry variable upgrade like the US vehicles.

Eg spend x cash the unit is now anti tank
spend y cash and the squaddie is now a sniper
spend z cash and we have a c4 equipped building capturing/destorying infantry.

new long range super cheiftain

loadable paradrop able transport aircraft
note all squaddies should be paradrop able.

3 star, para capable equip and armour drop.
We need some form of navy support to be truely english.

come to think of it, the invisible infiltrator, MI 5, after you build some advanced building you can steal tech and money from anyone, oh and shoot those damn lotus units and highjackers while your at it.

For the regular infantry I was considering having Royal Marines - they're special ability would be a single shot LAW (recahrges every minute or so). The other special infantry type I was thinking of was a Royal Engineer who can build simple defensive structures - like small one man fighting positions, static anti-tank emplacements or small aid stations to heal troops.

Harriers are definately something I'd like to include, start with bombs but can be upgraded to cluster bombs (perhaps give them ECM pods as an advanced upgrade). I was thinking of making their rearming/launching pad be fairly small and camoflaged - so you can hide them across the map.

A Secret Agent/Infiltrator unit could be cool, similar functions to the spies in Red Alert but armed with a silenced pistol he can kill infantry with while still cloaked. Could be a wee bit to cliché though.

As for Royal Navy support - I was thinking of intergrating them in the Generals abilities, one being a strike from a flight of Harriers with cluster bombs another being a cruise missile strike.

I think easier make EU faction and make UK a big part of its military forces.

Coz you're modding UK forces, I'm thinking about some James Bond unit (where you can have only one in single-player missions), which is a combination of Red Alert's spy and Tanya/original C&C's Commando. The disguise, though, will wear off as soon as it kills something, and it would need some time away from enemy's sight to "recover" the disguise. It could also have some special abilities like sabotaging enemy infrastructure, although you may need to tone it down elsewhere to balance the gameplay.

Harrier would also be cool.

Just a thought, how about original C&C mod, where you have NOD & GDI units and missions?
