Oh, those silly Trekkies

Post by Master of Ossus »

Save Enterprise earns national exposure. I bolded the amusing parts.
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Trekkies are uniting to win a reprieve for "Star Trek: Enterprise," slated to end its mission on UPN in May.

"Save Star Trek" was the headline of a full-page ad in Tuesday's Los Angeles Times that called on fans to get the show a new TV home through a petition campaign and rally.

"Captain Archer and the crew of the NX-01 need your help to continue their journeys!" the ad read, calling the "Star Trek" franchise a "cultural icon."

The ad asked viewers to commit to watching the show, now in its fourth season, if the Sci Fi Channel -- "its logical home," according to the ad -- agrees to pick it up.

A call requesting comment from the New York-based channel Tuesday evening was not immediately returned.

The ad contained clip-and-mail pledges addressed to the channel; Paramount Network Television, which produces the series; and to parent company Viacom Inc.

A rally is planned for February 25 outside the Paramount lot in Los Angeles, according to the ad, which says it was paid for by worldwide fan donations.

"Star Trek: Enterprise," which debuted in 2001 as a prequel to the original 1960s "Star Trek" series, stars Scott Bakula as Capt. Jonathan Archer. It begins reruns in syndication this fall.

For the first time in 18 years, however, no first-run "Star Trek" series will be airing.

The franchise included "Star Trek" (1966-69, NBC); "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987-94, syndicated); "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (1992-99, syndicated); "Star Trek: Voyager" (1995-2001, UPN) and "Star Trek: Enterprise."

The current series averaged about 2.9 million weekly viewers for the season, half the audience it drew in its first year. But the ad cites "a highly praised peak in creative vigor and audience enthusiasm."

I want to laugh as I watch their efforts go up in smoke and the Enterprise crew says goodbye despite their pathetic efforts to stop it from happening. I want to see that single tear of abject defeat roll down their acne pocked faces as its finally all over.

I remember an online "SAVE ENTERPRISE!" petition a while back. A full 3/4 of the posts said something to the effect of 'Sodomise B&B with a bat'leth'. My favorites were the demands for Branon Bragga's mother to perform a 'post natal abortion' on herself.

Not surprised as there are a bunch of fanatically loyal fans out there who will mindlessly worship anything with the Trek name on it. You know who they are.

I've lost too many shows that I liked to begrudge anybody the effort of saving their favorite series, even if the Not-Named Show was a steaming heap of turds.

That seems like the perfect argument to pick it up actually. Recall, this is the network of Andromeda's 4th and 5th seasons, Tremors: The Series, Boa vs Python ect.

Out of morbid curiosity I wouldn't mind that much if Sci-fi picked it up in syndication but I'd rather they spent their money on making SGA and BSG as good as possible.

Apparently, since this ad ran, they have raised $23,940 towards the 35 MILLION they think that they can collect to fund a new 5th season themselves! I mean.. wtf

I don't suppose I should bother pointing out that if the new Star Wars movie was cancelled, most people here would have a mass panic attack.

However, while I agree that Enterprise wasnt the best Trek series, it had its moments. I'm halfway through S3, due to our sci-fi hating networks here. And what I see each week is a general improvement over earlier episodes.

I'm not really devastated it's been cancelled, I agree B&B could do better, like not being involved in the creation process in any way.

Shame it's been cancelled, I highly doubt the campaigners will accomplish anything, whatever money they gather would be better used in the Tsunami appeal.
Voyager summed up in 1 quote:

Neelix: These people dont appreciate what they have! This ship is the match of anything in a hundred lightyears, yet what do they do with it?
(fake voice) Oh, well lets go find some space anomaly today that'll rip it apart!

Why would one of the most commercially successful movie franchise ever be canceled.

And dare I point out that even if the last two movies had not been, George Lucas (SW) creator had enough money from the first 3 to say Fuck You to the movie studios and pay for the finale himself.

Here's the problem with most Trekkie's in my experience. They have ABSOLUTELY no conception of television economics. They have this grand illusion that TV Networks and Movie studios should fund out of a WEIRD SENSE OF OBLIGATION this franchise FOREVER even if it doesn't make a dime at the box office or loses cargo-holds full of money.

Furthermore they endlessly complain about the smallest elements of each of the shows, hate-mail the production staffs about the tiny continuity problems then turn around and CRY when it's canceled.

My experience with SW fans has been the opposite. Despite the critics bad reviews of SW, they defend it with their every breath.

ST fanatical fans failed at economics 101. They should have been focusing from the beginning on getting more people to watch. Further, if they had wanted to save the on-going movie franchise, they should have attended the damn thing 50x. If all 1.3 million loyal Enterprise viewers had attended Nemesis 50x each the movie would have been declared commercially and economically successful.

I said enough. You may discuss the topic, but mocking those who are trying to save a series they enjoy is too much.

Tommy it ain't just that Trekkies feel that Trek should be funded out of an odd sense that Trek is some iconic show that should go on forever (we did go through about 20 years without a Trek show on TV after the original and no one gave a shit) but some of these Enterprise moronic cocksuckers have started bashing others for coming down so hard on Enterprise now claiming that we must support Enterprise for the good of SCI FI?!?! Fuck you asshole. The good of sci fi is best served with quality shows like Galactica and not the moronic bullshit we see on Enterprise. That's like African Americans being told that you must support certain entertainers for the good of the whole. No thank you, I will always take quality over quantity for my entertainment.

The most "loyal" of them failed much more than that.

Agreed. I've said my peace on this. But I will mock endlessly people who fund raise for a TV show that is hopelessly losing money.

Furthermore, I will question someone's ethics who believe that donating money to save a Sci-Fi series somehow has a higher priority than FIRST doing so for to save lives. (love to see on Trekbbs an organized effort to give to Tsunami victims)

Oh well lets be done with it.

Sorry Aly but when these morons are slapping around shows like BSG because their show tanked deserve a good spanking. Go check out the BBS, there's bullshit like "Now all we have is that stupid Galactica show." "We need to support Enterprise for the good of all sci fi." "I can't believe our show is gone and shows like Galactica are still on."

And besides, since when is it against board policy to mock stupid people?

I guess stating that we need to support a show for the good of sci fi and lamenting that all we have left if BSG makes them fucking geniuses. Here's a bit of advice, if you don't like what's being said in a thread that doesn't violate a rule of the baord stating that it should cease and desist means exactly jack and shit in this world. You can stop clicking on this thread if it pains you so.

The real focus should be on the people who killed Trek. People wanted to raise money to save Angel, Farscape, and many others. They might want to try and save a doomed series, but to them its something they enjoy. Mocking their efforts because others doomed ENT and because you don't like ENT doesn't show very good on you.

The difference is of course that the SW movies are still very popular and haven´t overstayed their welcome, unlike the ST-franchise. And that they´re ending on a high-note, once again contrasting the ST-franchise. :P
