I think I heard it over at the theatre last night, but I heard that someone was sueing because LotR: TTT was unpatriotic or some buillshit because supposedly it was resembling of the Twin Towers. (Now that I think of it, I think I heard this from Zaia on Tuesday morning....)

I think it was a gag petition on petitionsonline, and a lot of people ran with the story.

Following the attack on the World Trade Center on 11 September 2001, and because of the similarity between the buildings' nickname, "The Twin Towers", and the movie's title, "The Two Towers", the director and producers briefly considered renaming the second movie in the trilogy. They eventually decided against it, Peter Jackson's main reason being that, "fans would kill me".

I find Jackson's quote to be quite funny, but it's very, very true.

No, the petition wasn't a joke--some people turned it into that, but it wasn't. The "50 Reasons" were a joke, but this, alas, was not. I got this addy from the '50 Reasons LOTR Sucks" thread; there are two others sites listed, where someone originally learned of the existence of the petition, and where there is a counter-petition. This one is dead, though, I believe. *phew* Stupidity rests. At least, this case does.

It looked like more than 2/3 of the signatures (out of about 3500 I think?) were fake, but that means that 1/3 were still for real! Ack. People amaze me. They just keep on getting dumber.....or should I say, dummer?
