Stargate RPG cancelled by Sony

Post by Darth Sephiroth »

I don't know much about why it happened, but I thought that a few of you might not have heard this yet. AEG's Stargate RPG has been canceled due to Sony's liscensing judgement. It ends yet another Spycraft powered line that was really well done.

Goddamn, and I not long ago bought the RPG.

What books are there for it.

I've only seen the guide for 1st season and the System Lords book
Don't Move you're surrounded by Armed Bastards - Gene Hunt's attempt at Diplomacy

I will not make any deals with you. I've resigned. I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own - Number 6

I've got to say, I find this attitude kind of puzzling. I mean, it's not like the game police are going to come and take you away for playing an OOP game. Why can't you just keep playing the AEG version?

Because AEG has a backlog of material ready for publishing that will now never see print - and any future gaming books will likely be INTENTIONALLY INCOMPATIBLE meaning I'll need to purchase an entirely new system in order to play an up to date (in terms of plot/tech etc) game!

And that, pisses me off.

And you can't just adapt things? Or be a bit creative to include the newest widget?

I've seen a Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex game successfully run from the Spycraft books. There's no good reason to be so hidebound; the books provide a great basis but they're not the be all end all of gaming. You don't lose any ability to play that you didn't have and it's not like a little quick effort can't adapat things. So I fail to see the end of the world coming here.

JESUS CHRIST!

Of course I can ADAPT things! I've fucking converted d20 material to older systems and translated stats for nearly anything in any system to another!

THE PROBLEM HERE YOU INCOMPETENT FOOL is that there was a backlog of products that will now NOT be published and that a new developer will likely be FORCED to make the products incompatible out of SPITE by SONY!

Its not that I can't or won't adapt things - its that I shouldn't FUCKING HAVE TO! Especially when the new SG:1 RPG will likely refer to itself as Stargate SG:1 The R.P.G. 1st Ed - when in fact, it won't be! Would it kill SONY to just have AEG hand over all properties relating to it for use by the new developer?

A) Likely? Wouldn't it be at least prudent to wait and see?

B) Business is business. Believe me, compared to profits your pleasure comes in a distant second. You don't like it, don't buy it.

You have the materials they've published so just live with it. Why it's such a big bleeding deal to you I don't understand.

Its a big deal because literally a few days before the lawsuit was announced I'd made the decision to drop a PILE of savings (~300) on getting into this new system that looked like it had a good release schedule upcoming and a lot of community support as well as getting good reviews.

Then, I buy the books and discover that its about to go to court... And now, though I have some truly funky RPG materials, I'm disappointed that my season by season sourcebooks shall be no more.

Yay- checking out the AEG forums, it looks like the developers are circumventing the cut of the contract by planning to release their content for free (and thus dodging the IP laws).

Unless you don't get the books they aren't taking anything away from you. I can understand if that's the case. But if it's just not getting new books I fail to understand the anger. It's not like you can't watch and figure something out for the new seasons.

Cool, AEG is pretty good about that. I hope it doesn't bite them on the ass with lawsuits.
