I think I've finally cracked my Rome: Total War addiction
After playing the most ambitious game ever, in which I conquered the entire map (yes, the entire map, ie- every single territory with no exceptions, even that shitty little rebel territory up north near the Scythians where you have to take about 8 turns to reach it by going around a forest with no roads) as the House of Scipii, I feel that I have finally satiated my need to play RTW all the time. I'll still play, but not all the damned time.
The final tally was more than 500 battles, and 6 losses. By the end I was pulling in around 100,000 denarii per turn but it would mostly get used on construction. I had numerous huge cities and a whole bunch of full-stack armies running around.
Interesting tidbit about leaving the other Roman factions till the end, which is what I did: the Julii were much tougher nuts to crack than the Brutii because of unit selections. For reasons unknown to me, the Brutii armies tended to consist mostly of weaker, older units such as principes and early legionary cohort. He even had armies which were still using Equites for cavalry. The Julii, on the other hand, routinely attacked with armies full of much more elite units. In one battle, my army of early legionary cohort, roman cavalry, and archer auxiliar was waylaid by an army using legionary cavalry, onagers, archer auxilia, urban cohort, praetorian cohort, and legionary cohort. I couldn't pull a victory out of that no matter what I tried; his troops were just vastly superior to mine, and he had a numbers advantage to boot.

Have you tried playing as the Parthians?
I ended up getting my ass kicked by the Egyptians and Greeks, last time I tried. Cash-fucked from pretty much the outset, and first the Egyptians declare war on me, then after I finish off the Armenians the Pontics break our alliance to come after me. I pretty much waxed the Pontics while slowly grinding south into Egyptian turf, only to have the frickin' Greeks decide I was a blight in their eyes and send their goddamned faction leader and a full-stack army into my newly conquered Pontic territories.
In the meantime, the Egyptians have pretty much finished off the Selucids, so now they can just keep throwing endless waves of troops at me. I'm carving up full-stack army after full-stack army with my horse archers, but every battle is leaving me a little more worn down...
Ugh. I finally gave up as the Greeks started closing in from the west and the Egyptians started breaking through my southern defenses.
I'll probably start another game up for them soon, but for the moment I must bitterly laugh at their opening movie and how it brags about their vast wealth.

I can't seem to get off the Romans. They seem to be one of few nations to have flexible units. I tried playing as the Carthiginians, Greeks and Macedonians but their phalanx is just too awkward and bulky. Its hard enough already that the AI rarely ever stays in formation and moves its units around sporatically so your own phalanx can't properly engage without exposing its flanks. I hate the barbarian nations because they lack stone walls, paved roads, and larger cities. I'm looking forward to some very extensive mods and/or the expansion pack. I'm very hoping that they making it during the wanning years of Rome with the barbarian invasions. I would love to be the next Aetius.

God was the SPQR mod a bitch of a thing... I got my ass handed to me by the Macedonians/Greeks.Ace Pace wrote:Okey..you beat Rome..Normal
Now try SPQR mod then talk about hard.
My one complaint with the SPQR mod is what they do to the Roman forces, that's pretty much it.

Stop suggesting new games and mods for him, you fools! The longer Mike isn't playing anything, the better the chances for a new chapter of Reign of Terror!

True, but I agree with the maker, Rome TW is mostly about Rome.Captain Cyran wrote:

Though he did change the barbarians around into viable factions now.

One thing I learned quickly about the barbarian game... you have to actually play like a barbarian. I played the Brits and tried to be civilized. But without those 'make happy' buildings of the sort that the big boys have, it's no good to get your towns too big.Fire Fly wrote:I can't seem to get off the Romans. So you have to get momentum, roll along, exterminate as you go, and occasionally raze cities in order to stay in the black.
It's kind of a historical Zergling rush, when you think about it...

My addiction has been "broken" by the fact that R:TW is suddenly running slow as shit for no apparent reason...
