<<So, this is the new design?>> Admiral Yelthan eyed the destroyer hung in virtual clarity before his avatar.
<<Yes,>> the avatar of the chief designer stood beside him. <<The Nyx-class. It is roughly the size of a Synergy-class fast destroyer.>>
<<But the drive pod-?>>
<<It is larger than in the previous class,>> the designer nodded. <<It is a new design as well, a capital grav torch writ small. It's about twice the size of the previous torch used for the fast destroyers, but nearly quadruplicates the maximum acceleration of the Synergy.>>
<<That would make it one of the fastest craft in space...>>
<<A small downside, though. Due to the incredibly overpowered nature of the torch - you have what basically is a Battleship-grade torch writ so small as to fit on a destroyer - it's size is simply to small to guarantee perfect safety. It has a 10% chance of drive failure and loss of the ship.>>
<<Hm,>> the Admiral nodded. <<An acceptable rate. But it means we would have to build more to cover possible losses of the ships.>>
<<Yes,>> he pointed at the design, <<but it would offer a unique slot in our fleet mix. And the research there also means we will be able to increase the power output of the other grav torches by as much as 12% throughout the board.>>
<<What about weapons and defenses?>>
<<Ah, yes,>> the designer pointed at the ship again, <<not only will it be able to catch nearly everything short of a fighter, what it catches will feel it. It only has 4 Force beams; but those are heavy forcebeams, and we have one spinal mount graser. And we put in 5 capital grade missile launchers. A nice package.>>
<<Well,>> he turned to the designer, <<we will put it in the building slots as soon as possible. Prepare for it.>>

Fleet Captain Ebeld stared at the data. 3 Pirate cruisers remained in the Oswaldi system. They would to be disabled, then his soldiers would take them peace-

::editing::

They would be purged.

He calculated. All ships were at 99.8% efficiency. He calculated all jump parameters. It would take one micro-jump at multiple coordinates to throw off the bandits to allow him the first volley. He calculated to the sixth decimal the exact placement of ships required to pull this off.

In a moment, his battleforce slipped from hyperspace in orbit of the planet, immediately among the corsairs.

In a single volley, the pirate base was destroyed before its shields came up.

The pirate vessels attempted the jump, but the interdiction fields kept them in place. Soon, every vessel was surrounded.

Thirty Ralphas moved in groups of ten firing at the converted freighters, as a Shoom-class covered them with green fire.

In less than a minute, the battle was over. The pirate vessels were smashed.

The mind of Admiral Yelthan hovered over the Great Cloud Yard. Floating deep in the atmosphere of the planet, protected by its powerful shields, it was one of the largest yards of the Corporation.
It was buzzing with activities, robots, remote-controlled humans working on the new hulls to expand the fleet.
They would soon to be completed. It was only a normal build-up, far less than the yard, and the other yards, would be capable of in case of wartime.
He smiled. The Corporation would ready.

Several days after the broadcasts from the newly revealed powers, light courier ships carrying Corporate Sector sales representatives arrived at the designated capital systems bearing catalogs from CorpSec companies in various formats for maximum compatibility.

The reps' message was simple: We welcome your business. Here are the products we have available from Quaynar Industries, Vega Space Engineering, Industrial Agrotech, Hirsch Defense Systems, and Sirius Cybernetics and Automation. You may take your time to peruse the catalogs; we do not believe in high-pressure sales. Financing is available at low introductory rates if needed.

[OOC: Catalogs are available in the OOB thread if I recall.]

Nua listened intently to the gentle whisper in his mind of the lead designer of the Starship Design Bureau.

"This new cruiser is faster and more heavily armed than any of our current ones, but has weaker defenses. We believe that with a fairly extensive man-hours/resource budget, we could have a fleet of these built in a few months."

"What is the point?"

"Since we have re-opened contact with the galaxy, the rate of piracy in our nation has sky-rocketed 400%. We need newer, faster ships to combat their designs. Now, this vessel has an oversized reactor to power it, so to allow the continued production, we will need to step up local fuel-mining by 12% this year."

"Very good..."

I have been retained by a certain organization which operates out of the Star Kingdom of Serenity. They have been engaged for some time in a territorial struggle with the nefarious Triad Crime Syndicate, and have suffered a number of reversals since the beginning of the conflict some 18 years ago. It is their hope that your services would enable them to make some gains, and they have enlisted me as a neutral agent to negotiate a contract with you.

If you are interested I am prepared to meet with your representatives to tender more information on the job and to bargain over the question of your price.

"What about shields?"

"Well the energy output on most of our systems is very large already."

"But are they powerful enough to stop ANY bombardment?"

"Sir any bombardment implies even the power of the 'little gutter' weapon."

"Yes... Regardless, how is the new class doing?"

"The Norfolk Class sir?"

"Yes that one, how long untill be have a working group?"

"two months at present shipyard rate."

"Excellent."

Array

Sensor officer noted the course change of the NRS Long Island, and delivered the news to Captain Fluy.

Fluy noted the dispatch and sent message to the fleet”All Crusiers, take half the escort screen with you, match bearings and disable Interdictor 003”
With that, he inputted orders into the Array's battle computer, acceleratting the ship, and firing off the re-loaded missle banks at Interdictor 001, which was currently in the stages of powering down its generators in preperation for a jump.

“Escorts, fan out, eliminate those destroyers and fighters”

With that, the Array battlegroup split again, with cruiser Plyer leading the run for the 3rd Interdictor.

Plyer

Captain Mirshakisk sat down and and watched the sensor screen, picking out targets for the initial volly.

“Okey Traders and corvettes, accelerate, hit those destroyers fast, we need a clear shot at that Interdictor.”

The Traders, covered by a sphere of corvettes, sped ahead to engage the 3 destroyers in their path, firing torpedoes, with non of them penetrating, before entering combat range, they opened up the spehere, then enveloped the 3 destroyers.

Each destroyer outgunned the Traders, but the punishing fire from all sides quickly wore down the shields, and after that, it was just a matter of a few well placed shots, penetrating to the reactors, to end the destroyers in a few brief seconds of pure light.

With the destroyers out of the way, the 4 Rankin gunboats escorting the crusiers sped ahead, firing repeatedly their Storm Bolters, in each case, the high speed shells reached the Interdictor, and exploded outside the shields, creating a brief vortex which sucked the Interdictors shields away.

By the time the shields failed, the crusiers was closing in, and opened up with thier conventional arms, leading fire all along the Interdictor's hull, opening hull breachs and exploding weapon emplacments.

The Gunboats closed in to the crippled Interdictor, and forced open hull breachs, allowing dozens of marines to quickly board the craft, pirates, with their low grade scavanged small arms, were no match for highly trained marines, the Interdictor was subdued.

Array

The scene was no different, only the execution varied, with the same envelopment destroying the Interdictor 001's destroyer screen, however, the Interdictor by then was speeding away, nearly reaching hyperspace escape speed, before a well aimed torpedo volly breached her shields, and exploded the Interdictor's engines out of existence.

Galactic

“Slow the ship down, change course for the NRS Pillar of Autumn and request an urgent meeting the moment the 6th Squadron's ships eliminate the rest of the filth.

Send this message to the 6th Squadron:

“We were caught in this trap, we require assistence clearing them out, you have free fire on the rear 2 groups.”

The parade grounds on Osiris had been built over two hundred years ago, before the Three Suns of Osiris, Jacob's Landing, and Desjardins had united. The military academy on Desjardins had been far more impressive, a vast concrete plain measuring tens of miles to the side. That place had been destroyed utterly in the People's War. Nothing which had stood at ground zero of the superlaser strike still remained.

Osiris' field was a distant second to that lost wonder, but today, it played host to a parade as magnificent as had ever been seen on the Old Capital. The ground literally shook with the tramp of millions of booted feet. A mile-wide column of men and women marched in perfect unison. Legion standards, emblazoned with the insignia of over 360 seperate Legions, stood like the trees of a forest over the armored heads of the Milites and Legionnaires of the Commonwealth Army. Armor rolled alongside them, row after row of tanks, self-propelled artillary, point-defense guns, and IFVs filled the air with the growl of thousands of enginges. Overhead, squadron after squadron of Shrike-III gunships passed, their ramjets howling like the planet's famed storms. Over 5 million men and women, the soldiers of the 1eme Ambrosian Groupe Continental, marched in full kit towards the serried ranks of waiting dropships which would ferry them in to orbit. A fleet of Commonwealth Army transport vessels hung in space above, five barrel-shaped planetary invasion transports and two C-3 ships.

President Delacroix sat comfortably on the canopied podium, flanked by a bevy of military officers and minor officials. The Potentiate of the 1st Ambrosian, an aging Muscovite respelendent in his black-and-grey uniform, was making polite conversation with the President as the seemingly endless ranks of armor, artillery, and marching soldiers passed by.

"Curious, Mister President, the units you've deployed. The 1st Ambrosian,
the 2nd and 3rd Cornerian Lancers, and the 2nd Muscovite Guard... All newly-raised units from our most recently conquered holdings for these invasion training exercises."

Delacroix looked up. Senator St. Juste was standing there, her stern features seemingly carved of finest ebon. He smiled diplomatically.
"I see nothing curious about it, Madame Senator. New formations must be tested, and a Planetary Invasion Group must be perfectly co-ordinated. Such training missions are as vital as they are expensive."

"Ah, of course, Mister President. The fact you intend on staging the mission in our system in the Aquarian Union is of no significance?"

"No, Madame Senator, it does not."

"Do not take me for a fool, Mister President. I know SOP. We dispatch units like these when we want new citizens in our youngest provinces- when it is expected the units will see action."

"Madame Senator, that's a lovely theory you've concocted. I'm afraid, though, that no such 'action' is intended. Certianly, flexing our muscles in the vicinity of a major ERTC operation is a secondary concern, but there is no current plan to invade anyone for real."

St. Juste snapped her mouth shut. "Good day, then, Mister President. Thank you for your time."
She bowed as she left.

Liar.

"Glorious Captain, we have spotted the xenos vessel." The servitor's metallic voice grated on Captain Nigelius. His servo-throne rotated on it's axis, until Nigelius's armored form faced the cowering cyborg. The servitor dropped clumsily to it's knees with a mechanical squeak. "Glorious Captain, your executive officer is requesting permission to engage." Nigelius threaded his conciousness through his neural-link with the ship, peering out from the forward sensor array like a hawk. There sat the tiny cruiser sized xenos vessel, an oblong and misshappen sphere dotted with weapon clusters, a hallmark design of the Free'da'shan, floating far off in front of the His Glorious and Holy Fist.

The Free'da'shan were an industrially and territorially tiny race, Imperial intelligence having estimated them possessing no more than 5 worlds. Sadly, years upon years of scouting had failed to reveal the location of a single Free'da'shan world, and their ships were seldom seen in or near Imperial space. But this... Nigelius felt a flutter of excitement. The xenos vessel was unaware of their presence, the Fist having exited hyperspace mere minutes before, and slowing closing the distance with it's stealth field's on. The perfect ambush, and the xenos vessel didn't seem to be going anywhere in a hurry.

Nigelius dismissed the servitor with a wave of a hand, and again threaded his mind into the ship. Someone higher up had to know about this before action was taken.

Though the people were unaware of it, Nua realised that there were benefits to a physical form as he popped a large, juicy grape into his mouth. Of course, any member of the Collective could enter a simulation to eat a grape, but he wouldn't know what a grape tasted like ion the first place.

Even Nua did not feel a tate so much as a memory of a taste- but that was better than nothing.

He sighed and checked reports.

Another ship lost to pirates. A colony which never got its supplies, causing some minds stationed there to break down. Another skirmish in the core of the Solidarity. Even with a new line of warships coming in, he would never have enough to fight this war of attrition and still remain a regional power. Even the prototypes were weeks away from completion.

It wasn't quite as bad as it seemed, really- Slowly, he was purging newly-acquired territories of pirates. Their old, half-scrapped warships and modified freighters were no match for his space-navy.

But more and more pirate kingdoms, robber-barons and smugglers were descending on his realm as a new land, ripe for the plucking. Even worlds which were lost to the Solidarity still retained lost technologies, resources, even derelict ships. And the pirates fought for their prizes.

And death would be their punishment.

Eventually, he would reclaim Shoom's lost glory, and all of the worlds they had left behind.

But until then, they needed allies.

Greetings, to whomever in your fair government hears this message.

In the past months, my nation has been besieged by dozens of pirate vessels, smugglers, and robber-barons intent on pillaging all the wealth of my nation. I require allies to deal with this threat, perhaps in the form of membership as part of the Eastern Rim Trading Compact. I am fully willing to begin trading many of the valuable resources of my systems to others along the Easrtern Rim Trade Route if you require that, and I am willing to lend the full support of all of the Enlightened Forces of Shoom to deal with any threats which may emerge in the other nations of the Compact. I hope we will come to an agreement.

I hope I find you in good grace and health,

Blue Pointe Station

The station master sat onboard the Constructor Command ship, the temporary command center while the station was being rebuilt.

"Power Plant reports ready, Station Master." the engineer reported over the comm
"Power Coduit final check complete, all circuits look clean." came the voice of the cheif overseer over the comm.

"Excellent, please begin." the station commander sat tensely in his chair, he just knew the station was going to blow up, it was just one of those days. Onboard the station the engineer sat at a terminal outside the reactor room, looking at the master switching station, which controlled all power flow within the station, now it was time to put it to the test.

"Power Plant is online, ready to begin opening switches." the commander gripped the cushion on his chair tightly, "Begin."
Click - Reactor Housing, mirofusion generators gave a colletive sigh of relief as the station's main powerplant took over powering the individual segments
Click - Industrial Ring, power routing stations came to life, directing power this way and that. Corridor lights blinked on and turbolift elevators came to life, and began to run their diagnostics.
Click - Southern Habitation Ring, lights throughout the habitation section came on, it was distinctly unimpressive display.
Click - Primary Docking Ring
Click - Northern Habitation Ring
Click - Northern Docking Ring
Click - C&C Pylon
Power was flowing, lights were on, and nothing had exploded.

"Good." the station commander opened the comm again, "Please begin with life support system... starting with gravity[/i]." next to him stood the Reverend Mother Thadiam, she smiled
"Wonderful work, commander" she left.

It would take a long while to pressurize and warm the insides of the station.

The Second Fleet Element, currently on diplomatic escort duty, dropped out of slipspace ten light minutes outside of the 13 Republics.

Captain Compton, on board the SCS Lupin, looked at the screen displaying sensor data.

"Flight Ops, contact the rest of the element and tell them to get some Broadswords and Jackals out there as a recon picket. Helm, take us in. Comms, begin the sending the message."

The UTR had been taking it slowly against the Klingon Empire. The blockade had weakened the Klingon economy and wasted the Klingon fleet in a series of small battles all along the border and the perimeter. It was now finally time to bring this conflict to endgame.

The Terran Navy had amassed a truly awesome fleet to completely cut off the Klingon Empire from the rest of the galaxy. Fifth Fleet had been repaired and refited after the mauling it had taken in the Battle of the Klingon Perimeter. Now the entirety of Fifth Fleet along with Sixth Fleet, and supported by three Flotillas of the Federation Star Fleet, four Patrol Groups of the Alliance Space Force and three maniples of the Commonwealths Navy.

Second Fleet, with Space Guard support had closed down the Terran-Klingon border, and the UTR had been quietly watching the Klingon Empires economy collapse as it poured almost its entire GNP into planetary defences and star fighters.

Home Fleet, in its entirety, was mobilzed and sitting along the Klingon Border. This war was intended to finally end the Klingon threat. The UTR had let that petty kingdom exist on its border for centuries and had finally had enough of its raiding on shipping passing through klingon space from the UTR to the Commonwealth. It was intended to be a methodical campaign with Terran fleets moving from target to target and destroying any and all defenses, then supporting landings by Army Planetary Assault Legions.

The first target would also be the toughest one, Qu'NoS itself, the capital of the Klingon Empire and its most heavily defended world. The Fleet being gathered for this battle was even larger and more powerful then that gathered by the UTRN for Second Desjardins, four Republic class SDs, four Terrae class DNs, a pair of battlecruisers, two Titan CVAs, eight escort carriers, four heavy cruisers and almost a hundred escorts.

The assault began with Home Fleets arrival in the outskirts of the Klingon capital system. Klingon pickets had detected the fleet crossing the border, and a few ships had tried to intercept them. Any ship with a captain stupid enought to commit suicide by throwing himself against that huge mass of metal had been destroyed quickly for almost no effect.

Admiral Worthintun was one the UTRNs most experienced officers as well as one of its most senior, as was only fitting for the man holding the UTRs premier fleet command. "Tactical, whats the enemies force disposition?"

"I'm detecting, what looks like three battleships and a pair of battlecruisers in orbit, I'm also detecting what looks like about twelve heavy cruisers and about sixty escorts in formation with them." If TNI was right that was the Klingons entire remaining capital ship strength and over eighty percent of its cruisers, intelligence on remaining escorts were more sketchy but it was probably around 40% of all remaining klingon escort ships. "

I'm also detecting a huge amount of orbital and planetary defences, we're also picking up somewhere around three thousand fighters in orbit, and CIC is estimating another two thousand still on the ground."

Worthintun was amazed by the sheer stupidity being shown by the Klingons. It was almost like they were following directions straight from Terra intended to make this war as easy for the UTRN as possible. The smart thing to do would have been for the Klingons to disperse and force the UTRN to fight a long protracted guerilla war. Instead they were gathering everything they had for one grand battle. Stupid, but expected, it was the typical Klingon thing to do, there honor would allow them no other option.

Klingon industry had been producing starfighters as fast as they could since the blockade had started, they were the only thing that the Klingons could build that would be available quickly enough that could possibly affect the outcome of the war. That was the source of the huge cloud of fighters heading straight for Home Fleet.

"Order the Fleet to begin anti-fighter procedures." The Assault Carriers, Prometheus and Titan both launched almost there complete fighter load while holding the antishipping bombers in reserve till the Klingon fleet was closer in and the swarm of fighters had been reduced. Right now the five thousand fighters heading towards Home Fleet was the main concern. Adding to the almost 800 fighters launched by the twin assault carriers were the fighter loadouts of the eight escort carriers riding in tight formation with them, almost 800 more fighters. Unfortunately this meant the Klingons would still outnumber them more then three to one.

Vice Admiral Backins, Worthintuns carrier commander, had been expecting something like this and so he'd worked closely with Vice Admiral Hotspur, the Battleline commander and Vice Admiral Freestone the cruiser and escort screen commander to come up with a multi-layered defense against the incoming tsunami of fighters.

Home Fleet had the heaviest battleline of any Terran fleet but was a little light in fighters compared to the other fleets of the UTRN. There had been some discussions of detaching carriers from Fifth or Sixth Fleet to beef up Home Fleet but Worthintun had been confident that his defensive plans would be sufficient to cover any fighter swarm attacks by the Klingons.

"Order the Fleet to take defensive formation Beta-One, begin defensive firing pattern Alpha-three at point Omega." Home Fleet oriented itself in a defensive formation with the carriers in a trailing formation behind the battleline and the cruisers taking up an inner defense position around the carriers and battleline. A small globular formation of thirty escorts took up an outer screen around the cruisers and another seventy escorts took up a forward conical screening position between the battline and the advancing fighters.

"Begin hypermissile launchs on my mark. Mark." UTRN ships, like most modern navies used hypermissiles as the primary long range weapon. Unlike most navies though the UTRN used internal hypermissile launchers buried deep within the hull.

Because of this UTRN missiles were little more then a warhead with a simple detenation device. Most navies prefered to use hypermissiles that mounted there own hyperdrives, this made the missiles longer ranged and gave a faster rate of fire then the type used by the UTRN but were also individually more expensive and took up more magazine space. They also required missile tubes to launch them clear of the target since they couldn't go to hyper inside a ship without causing massive damage to the launching vessel.

The UTRN design did not require breaks in the armor belt for missile tubes, which improved the ships toughness, but it also required a massive investment in the specialized internal hyperspace generators and launching chambers required to launch the missiles.

Vice Admiral Backins plan was for the fleet to concentrate all its missile fire in an area called Point Omega. Point Omega was an area at extreme hypermissile range for Home Fleet. The entire fleet would lay down a barrage of hypermissiles set for proximity detonation. Basically the fleet would lay down a giant minefield in front of the advancing Klingon fighters and the Klingons would fly right into it.

Obviously the mine field wouldn't be as accurate as a true anti-fighter minefield with its guided mines but it was hoped that the much larger warheads of starship missiles would compensate for that somewhat.

"Klingon fighters are coming up on Point Omega." Home Fleet had spent the last forty-five minutes pumping warheads into that region of space and now it was time to see if it had been worthwhile.

The first explosion was incredible, a massive series of fireballs that chewed up the incoming fighters. Five thousand fighters had entered point omega, only thirty five hundred left it. Home Fleet stopped its bombardment as the klingon ships passed through point omega, saving the few missiles remaining in the magazines for the warships slowly advancing behind the fighter swarm.

"Begin missile bombardment on the Klingon fleet once they reach point Armageddon and free the forward screen to engage the Klingon fighters and release our fighters to engage them."

The Klingon fighters cleared point omega and almsot instantly came under fire from terran frigates and destroyers moving to engage them at max acceleration. Accelerating much more quickly but coming from a farther distance were the sixteen hundred fighters of Home Fleets carriers.

The Klingons only interest was in getting to the capital ships and carriers at the heart of the UTRN formation, so they made the fatal decision to just try and run the gauntlet.

They were first engaged by STL anti-fighter missiles launched by the frigates and destroyers, soon after that the incoming terran naval fighters reached extreme missile range and each fighter salvoed half of its missile load. When the Klingons entered the escorts pointe defense energy envelope the fighters salvoed the second half of their missile loadouts.

Shortly after that it became a massive dogfight as terran fighters closed to energy range and opened fire, and the Klingons responded. Sensor data showed that all of the Klingon fighters were armed with ASMs and only had internal guns for anti-fighter work and they were also slowed down considerably by the heavy ASMs they carried. The terran fighters meanwhile were perfectly configuered for dogfighting and took full advantage of it.

By the time the fighters had passsed through the forward screen and reached the outer screen the Klingons were down to around two thousand fighters and the Terrans had already lost four hundred fighters.

By now the Klingon fighters were taking fire from all directions but as they bullied their way through the outer screen and had came up on the cruiser screen, by now there were probably fifteen hundred fighters left out of the five thousand that had reached point omega.

The fighting was unbelievably intense now as, cruisers, destroyers, frigates and even the battleline pumped point defense fire into the Klingon fighters. Several small groups of fighters peeled off to engage the heavy cruisers, the rest continued to bore in on the battlecruisers and dreadnoughts of the battleline.

The cruisers Roosevelt and Thatcher were both hit hard by the Klingon ASMs and took heavy damage. Thatcher was hit so hard that she lost all main power and was floating in space under only emergency life support power.

The remainder of the Klingon fighters threw themselves at TNS Union and TNS Victory, both Republic class SDs. Most of the Klingon fighters had by now realized they had no chance of reurning home and so most of them took their fighters in behind the missile salvoes. Both ships were hit hard and Victory was forced to drop back, along with Roosevelt and Thatcher and join the carriers behind the main formation.

"Tell the carriers to release the strike force." Each carrier had kept its full complement of bombers ready to go along with a squadron of heavy fighters for escort duties. Now it was time to send those craft in against the advancing klingon fleet. "Order Lincoln and Lancelot to fall back and provide close escort for the carriers and damaged ships."

[Part 2 to be completed thursday most likely]

The notary public smoked--tobacco. It wasn't so common a habit, more of a fringe activity in the millenia since the human diaspora. After the various negative side effects of cigarette had been conquered by advancing medical technology (and even in this dark age, medical care in the Entente powers was sufficient to the task of dealing with cancers and emphysema) it had very few negative connotations. It was a hobby of connosieurs, who were constantly competing with one another to get the best source. Tobacco was not widely cultivated.

So Kismet puffed away at a cigarette and regarded the representative of Johan's Legion with an even stare.

"The job is simply as described. The mercenaries will be conducted to the planet Kielce, where they will receive information on precisely which concentrations of Triad soldiers are to be reduced. The authorities have been paid off and will turn a blind eye on any difficulties. We will pay your standard rate, with the sole proviso that your people must provide their top operatives. My clients will accept nothing less," Pakyuz outlined, "Any questions?"

The Legion representative leaned back in his chair and idly fanned away a puff of smoke. "The Legion always provides their own transportation." He looked hard at Pakyuz. "No offense meant, of course. They have their own concerns, naturally. Now, how large a group would your clients prefer for the thinning-out operation? Two? Five? Fifteen?"
