I like the USSR's best, indeed. Great piece. Germany's next I gues.
Pah, Britain is as likely to change it's national anthem as the entire nation is going to build giant rocket boosters and move the country to about the same latitude as Hawaii. As much as a lot of us dislike the national anthem for sounding crap, barring revolution, I think we're stuck with it.

Hmm. I thought that only the third verse of the Deutschlandlied is official today (or rather since 1950)? IIRC, the fourth verse was written by an other author, and didn't last very long but no fifth verse has ever been written.

Didn't the Nazi regime invent its own German national anthem (music of which can supposedly be heard in portions of the original Wolfenstein 3D)?

Only the third verse is our anthem.
While the original meaning of the first verse was something else, it bears heavy connotations to the Nazis nowadays.
While it is not illegal to sing the first two, it is frowned upon.

No, the Deutschlandlied was the German national anthem between 1922-1945, and then from 1950 to the present day (although the third verse only), even though some other songs were prominent during the Dritte Reich, one of the darkest eras in history.

EDIT: Yes, Dahak, wasn't the initial words of the first verse an expression of the wish for unifying the many German states?

the song war written in 1841 by august heinrich hoffmann von fallersleben. during that time germany consisted of the deutsche bund which were a whole bunch of small countries. "germany above" didn´t mean that germany is better than everyone else but that a united germany is better than one consisting of many small countries with lose ties.
of couse the lyrics fitted perfectly into the rethorics of the nazis, so they reinterpreted them.

the melody was composed by joseph haydn in 1797.

the inofficial nazi hymn was the horst wessel song. it´s illegal to sing.

The Nazis used the first verse combined with the Horst-Wessel song.

In no particular order, and minus the words for all of them:

Russia.

Germany.

Mexico, check it out if you've never listened to it.

Turkey, sinister as hell for a national anthem. :D

United States.

France.

Canada.

Rockin, I'd have to say the USSR, Germany, and the USA.

I mean the USSR's just sounds friggin amazing, Germany's is cool as all hell while actually being quite meaningful in the period in which it was written (My brother hates it when I play the song), and the USA's is about sticking through a hopeless fight and winning in the end.

Although the Israeli National Anthem, while not rockin', is just fucking moving. 2000 years of hope...

The only time I hated my anthem was when the orchestra or whatever they used at winter olympics in Salt Lake City butchered it... :)

Okay, woah, no, slow down and stop before you say anything else.
I'm utterly sick of the Mexican national anthem. It's actually quite good, it's just that half the radio stations in Southern California play it at midnight for like, 5 minutes on a loop. It'd drive you insane too!

I agree with the others though I need to check out Turkey's.

As an aside, that hymn in the beginning of The Hunt for Red October -- is that the national anthem? Because while that song kicks so much ass, I googled USSR national anthem and got something very different sounding which was... okay. Am I confused here? I think I am. :?

No, that's a soundtrack piece.
They sing the anthem when they engage their sneako-drive :)

The USSR/Russia is the most moving simply because I always associate it with the sacrifice of 20 million lives in defence of the country.

Not that Canada's is. The maple leaf forever would be better, but it is not politically correct.

At least the US anthem is more action filled than Canada's. It's all about rockets, bombs and fragging people. Canada's is just about standing guard doing nothin' cause nobody ever bothers to invade.

I love the Canadian flag, but hate our Anthem, we need a new one. One that speaks about what Canada is really about. Like Hockey, poutine and dog sleds (well, not everyone dog sleds, but there is a lot of it going on). It should also speak proudly of our history, like how we were the best country for beaver and how that one time a bunch of us got drunk and went and burned down the White House.

Now that'd be an anthem!

Sounds rather like you would like the maple leaf forever (well, it mentions neither poutine nor hockey, but I prefer curry and fencing myself anyway). But it is also to British.

I don’t like Oh Canada either. The tune is a poor, tepid, ponderous thing, and the words are mediocre at best. The maple leaf forever has a better tune, and a new version of the words could be devised.

Well, it's not quite fisticuffs, but they did technically invade Canada. In retaliation, I propose we rename Great Danes as Freedom Dogs.

When Britain first at Heaven's command,
Arose from out the azure main,
This was the charter, the charter of the land,
And guardian Angels sung this strain,

Chorus
Rule, Britannia, Britannia rule the waves,
Britons never will be slaves!

The Nations (not so blest as thee)
Must in their turns to Tyrants fall,
While thou shalt flourish great and free,
The dread and envy of them all.

Chorus

Still more majestick shalt thou rise,
More dreadful from each foreign stroke;
As the loud blast that tears the skies,
Serves but to root thy native oak.

Chorus

Thee, haughty Tyrants ne'er shall tame:
All their attempts to bend thee down,
Will but arouze thy gen'rous flame,
But work their woe, and thy renown.

Chorus

To thee belongs the rural reign,
Thy cities shall with commerce shine;
All thine shall be the subject Main,
And ev'ry shore it circles thine.

Chorus

The Muses still with Freedom found,
Shall to thy happy coasts repair; Blest Isle!
With matchless beauty crown'd,
And manly hearts to guide the Fair.

Chorus

I'd have that as my national anthem if I had the choice...

The March of the Volunteers (PRC)

(Lyrics English)
Arise, ye who refuse to be slaves!
With our flesh and blood, let us build our new Great Wall!
The Chinese nation faces its greatest danger.
From each one the urgent call for action comes forth.
Arise! Arise! Arise!
Millions with but one heart,
Braving the enemy's fire.
March on!
Braving the enemy's fire.
March march! March on! March on! On!
