Another one falls to the M$ Empire

Post by Mr Bean »

Microsoft announced today that Nironobu Sakaguchi has joined Microsoft Game Studios to develop games exclusively for the next-gen Xbox.

Best known as the creator of the Final Fantasy franchise, Sakaguchi was the executive vice president in charge of game development at Square Enix until Feb, 2001 and is president of Mistwalker game studios.

CRRRRRAAAAP.

But he doesn't own any of those games, right? Square Enix does...right?

Gah. At least Nintendo is still going (recall what happened last time MS tried to buy them?)...

That didn't actually happen, did it?

Anyways, Sakaguchi's recent stuff hasn't been that good anyways. Just as long as Kojima doesn't fall, I'll be content. The MGS series is one of the few old franchises I still enjoy.
I dunno, I'm fairly certain it did happen.

Bah, thats no thing, he created it ~20 years ago, he's probably had little to due with it since 6 at most. Shigeru Myomoto(sp?) hasn't been involved in a Zelda since OoT IIRC.

EDIT: Now MS buying Rare, that was a terrible loss, we lost their DK and Starfox work(fuck you Namco) and MS got the Perfect Dark and Conker lines.

I wonder why MS can't make any games themselves and always have to resort to buying them from others?

Halo (Bungie), Age of Empires (Ensemble), and almost every really good game from MS were made by others and bought.

MS may have made some sports and racing games, I'm not sure, but thats far from innovative.

Sakaguchi had already been marginalized by Square after some project he wasn't even responsible for failed (yay for Japanese corporate management skills!). This is actually a positive development, seeing as if he'd stayed at Square he'd have been unable to accomplish anything.

The FF movie? He was totally responsible for it. He directed it!

Maybe they recognize that game development is a weakness and they're looking to rectify that by bringing respected and proven talent into their organization?

But hey, what do I know about sensible business management?

This isnt bad.

What is bad is when EA Games buys the study up. Microsoft is a great publisher, a fantastic publisher, compared to them.

And Bungie must have a god damn blank check(s) from the Microsoft exec's

IIRC Flight Simulator was developed by Bruce Atwick and originally published by SubLogic, until he sold out to M$ circa 1991. Or am I mistaken?

Actually Micro$$oft philosophy from the very start is, "when you suck at making *ANYTHING*, buy someone who's better than you to do the work" (or at least buy and repackage their product). Seattle Computing, anyone?

Pardon me for being confused, but why is this such a big deal? They will still make games, won't they? If anything this is good, now they have a financial backer who can support them while they craft their games, more time = better game generally... what's the problem?

Well that doesn't really worry me any. Not yet anyway. It's not like them buying a company that makes good video games is illegal or anything. They provide a superior platform, thus the company can make superior games. Why wouldn't you want all games to run on the best platform, honestly...
