Do you think Lucas is aware of others?

Post by Stravo »

Do you think GL is aware of whats happening in Sci Fi? By that I mean do you think he takes some time from being immersed in his own world to maybe slip in a DVD and wacth some Trek? Maybe he catches the occasional B5 episode in between drafting sessions? Maybe he curls up at night with a good sci fi book?

Considering how sci fi tends to draw much inspiration and ideas from itself do you think GL is isolated and lives in his own world using his memories of the Flash Gordon sequels and such when coming up with SW ideas. Or does GL have a passing knowledge of whats happening in sci fi such as being aware of other competing series or TV shows. Or is Star Wars a full time job 24/7?

Well, first you asked for people's opinion, so I gave mine. :P

Seriously though, while this is a question based on opinion, in the end it's one that frankly has none and really can't be answered.

I think that GL realy does not give a damn about what happens in other sci fi unviverses. I mean it's like he thinks he can just stay in his little bubble.

I'm almost certain in some commentaries he makes passing references to other sci fi shows and how they are different but never anything concrete. I was just curious since people here seem to be in the know about certain series creators and such whether Lucas lived in his own universe and if he took a break to be entertained in someone else's.

Well, really what's the problem with that if it's the case? What makes you say that he CAN'T do that?

Besides, from what's been said and heard, Lucas is pretty much going to move on outside of science fiction once he's done with RotS.

In a 1988 interview, he said that while writing Star Wars, he'd stop at 5:00 every day to catch a rerun of Star Trek. And note how many sci-fi and fantasy movies have used ILM to do the FX. He'd of course be aware of those.

Thank you Poe. Thats what I thought. A man as creative as he is has to try and find time to let someone else entertain him. Cool.

Well we know that he knows about Jay and Silent Bob, or at least saw Clerks given his commentary in AotC - when referring the 'sub contractors' of the DS. Although he should have said Randal and Dante instead of Jay and Silent Bob ... although I'm not sure if that answers your question though.

No Crown, thats precisely the kind of stuff I was wondering about. I just can't see the guy living and breathing Star Wars all the time. He needs to take a break away from this stuff and maybe while doing so he gets the creative juices flowing too by being exposed to other story ideas and such, I know I do this all the time.

I remember in an interview before TPM, he was asked about the latest Star Trek film which ILM did effects for (Insurrection) and asked if he liked Star Trek or considered it good sci-fi or whatever. I think he gave a very diplomatic answer, that it was "different" or "good in a different way" or something. Think he might have seen the end product of Insurrection and freaked? :P

Oh, and it seems he has lots and lots of books at home, it´s possible there´s some sci-fi classics among them.

Hey Stravo, you know the coolest thing I read about Lucas? On the set of TESB, some of the stars presented him with a replica Flash Gordon ray gun. Carrie Fisher said Lucas' eyes lit up like a kid at Christmas, and she caught him playing with it on the set!

See, thats the kind of stuff I like to hear about. The man is not just walking around in flannel with his head in the clouds thinking up new stuff. He's as much a geek as most of his fan base and thats cool.

I don't think Roddenberry was nearly as geeky however but that could be partly because of his life experiences. He was in the Army and then was a motorcycle cop, that can ground you too much sometimes. GL's sort of been living a dream most of his life. (that's not a dig, believe me I wish I could live my whole life coming up with ideas to entertain millions and getting paid for it.)

**On the set of TESB, 1977**

Snappy board guy: "Darth Vader vs, Luke Skywalker, take 15."

Darth Vader: "...Luke, I am your..."

*Lucas jumps on stage, points raygun at Vader*: "Bang, bang!"

Vader: "Dammit! George! This is the 15th freakin time you've done that! Do you have any idea how hot and sweaty it is inside this thing?"

Lucas: "Sorry man, I just love this thing so much! Don't worry, won't happen again. Let's give it one more take."

*Lucas walks off the stage and the snappy board guy walks back up*: "Darth Vader vs. Luke Skywalker, take 16."

*Off set, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford watch*

Ford: "You know, maybe giving him that thing wasn't such a good idea."

Vader (off screen): "...Luke, I am your..."

Lucas: "Bang, bang!"

Vader: "Fucking shit!"

Fisher: "Yeah, definatly."

Yeah, and meanwhile less than a dozen people knew the truth. Lucas, Hamill , Kasdan and Kershner (duh), and probably no more than 2 or 3 other people. Very clever.

I hate to nit pick but ILM didn't do the effects for Insurrection, and it shows.

I´m not sure what you´re trying to say, did they or didn´t they?

EDIT: Ok, they didn´t.
