Fable

and the crack that it is.

Been wanting to buy this game for a while. Never got around to it but I rented it the other day and since I had a five day weekend, been playing it a bit.

Whoa. The story itself is nice. The ability to just do everything, including boink you wife, is awesome.

The game was good enough that I really just had to go buy it.

I want to go the 'magical' route but seeing the spells, I just don't see how one can do it? Warrior all the way. The weapons system is odd. No real reason not to go with the heavies. Great sword or axe. No real bonus for smaller weapons. Odd.

I hate the targeting system too, but not enough to dislike this game.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

yeah some of the targeting can get a bit fussy.

I found the only way to go at all mage is to be warrior mage, even though it's more an emphasis of warrior than mage.

It is indeed great fun. I was up till the wee hours playing it at my Dad's house.

I grew to love hunting bandits.

Thats a shame. I bought the damn thing and really wanted to go through as a mage. When I first started playing, I was amazed that the system didn't have 'classes' per say. Given the three base skills.

And even as I sing the praises for this game, the weapons leave some to be desired too. As I mentioned earlier, there is no reason not to go for the big heavies. A longsword or a katana has nothing going for it while the Great Sword or a Battle Axe just has more damage for it.

Oh, and while figuring out the love/marrage system, I've got half the damn world in love with me including the guys (Yueeck, no offense GALE).

I thought there was a speed disadvantage with the bigger weapons?

True, but curiously enough, there is a speed skill to increase the speed inwhich you swing your blade/pull your bow. I can whip my Great sword around or my great axe, like a katana.

How long does it take to complete? I heard the only drawback, as with most superb games, is that the perfection comes at the cost of longevity.

Maybe a good 8 hours, the game is really short. Replay value isn't what you would expect it to be either.

I bought Fable, and I was really dissapointed with it. Fable is like Diet Coke, it takes almost like a real RPG but there is an annoying aftertaste and a feeling like it is 'missing' something.

*shrug* I'm about 11 or so hours into it. Maybe I'm being slow. I don't know. That said, the 3rd person fighing is a breath of fresh air. As is the just vast ways to distingush your character. You might not be able to choose a 'look' at the start, but all the titles, clothes, being fat or slim, drunk or not, married or single, straight or gay is really astonishing.

Really it is an action game with RPG elements because I wouldn't classify it as an RPG other than the 'level up' elements and sheer variety. Since I haven't won the game yet I have no idea of the total length.

I've met my sister, I've found the 'archeologist' twice and I'm now looking at getting into the 'prison'. That's where I'm at.

Well, that and being marired twice, owning three houses and a bussiness.

When I first saw Fable, I was like "Cool an rpg game that has some action elements in it" I had wanted a game like that forever. But this game is kinda lacking....I finished it in a couple of days and then never touched it again. Its premise and everything is very promising, but its too damn short. Also, its not an online game, which is a definate negative, at least for me. Fable was a dispointment to me...But I like the marrage part--Ive got 3 wives...lolz :P

Thats a shame: I've temporarily got an Xbox (until GTA ports, anyway) and I was going to give Fable a bash.

Rent it. If it's short, then no sense in letting it go to waste when you could have it a weekend and pretty much complete it.

Well like I said, I've spent about 12 hours in game, and it's way cool. True, I don't eat an RPG in a weekend. It took me *real time* about two or three weeks to go through KOTOR (RL concerns give little time for games) so perhaps in my case, Fable is worth it.

Any-hoo. Rent it. Its a hell of a time.

Going the magic route makes the game super easy. You won't have a single scar. Just remember this word: "Lightning" when you get lightning (5 is it?) you can shock multiple enemies. Also it freezes them in place while you pour voltage into em. I did one guy as an evil bastard from hell warrior, and one as a saint from heaven wizard-y type. Best RPG ever, IMHO, Molyneux is to be congratulated. Also, If you are a warrior, it's worth it to pick up will points for mana shield. nothing keeps scars off or lets you complete without a scratch boasts quite like it.

I played fable, liked it at first and then said, WTF wheres the open ended gameplay, thers really nothing to do anymore than just screw around. See now this is why i like morrowind, theres so much to do it takes you a month just to find everything, and then you have expansions for PC or gold edition for x-box.

See, after Morrowind and its 200+ hours of gameplay, I can't understand how RPG makers can even dream of putting out a game with a mere 20 hours to do just about everything.

The last good sub-20 hour RPG was Chronotrigger, and they only managed to get away with that by making the game godly amounts of fun to play.

Here are the flaws I can recall about it...

The level system is a bit whacked because the more things you buy, the older your character looks. Normally at the end of the game your character looks FAR older than his own mother, nothing at all like your sister who appears in her 20's. When your hero looks 65+, your sister looks 20, you have a problem.

There is a dragon quest in the game that wasn't finished.

Listening to "You have an Important Quest Card..." over and over again.

Your armor/robes are pretty boring. If your going for a fighter type you get plate (except for the helmet that is strangely missing) or robes for the mage types. There are no unique types of armor/robes to look for, there is no wow-factor. Instead of "you found a what?" it is "oh you got enough money to be the plate, great".

Though the game lets you continue on (just don't skip the credits) there isn't anything more to do.
