Star Trek MMO

Post by Jon »

Since it was announced last september, there's been quite a decent flow of information from the Developers into the fan community, on the official forums at startrek.com and on fan sites too (like my own)

Anyhow, I just thought I'd post up a link to the updated FAQ, which is alot more useful than the one they came out with at the initial announcement:

Updated FAQ

As well as this 'Guide to what we know' article that I wrote, which documents parts of the design the dev's have revealed and that will probably be part of the gameplay

A Guide to ST: O

I'm looking forwards to it (obviously) and I like the way it is going, but some people have said it looks a bit shit, from the FAQ... each to their own. Be sure to check out the forum, the devs post there :) Are you interested in a Star Trek MMO, have you played Star Wars Galaxies?

Well one big difference is there isn't going to be any PvP, so really I'm not sure what you're going to do. Also you can only play humans?

EDIT: My info was way old, looks like there is some type of sport PvP in the holodeck and multiple races.

Actually, in a recent poll we did on the forum it looks like Engineering is the most popular choice so far, but yeah I can understand where you're coming from. I want to do engineering though, we'll be able to fly workbee's and build/upgrade ships for one :P

Can I name my ship anything?

No, but the exact method of choosing a ship's name is still in the works.

Include an automatic spell check forcing you to use actual words, perhaps?

It's been brought up, indeed. But they say you'd end up with inappropriate ship names like 'USS The Best Ship' or things like that, as far as I know they are probably going to use moderated ship name, game managers will approve the name you choose for your ship.

But this isn't a huge issue anyway, not everyone will get a ship and in turn you'll only get a command when you reach the required experience level and have dedicated your skillbuilding to that field, my bet is that ship names will be automatically generated from a database anyway, since when have Trek captains been allowed to name their ship? ETC

Damn, they fleshed out the FAQ a good bit since it was first announced.

This may actually be the first MMOG I'm looking forward to since they canceled UXO (fucking EA).

Depending if we get multiple characters per server, I will try for a Engineering/Science specialist character, and possibly one for Flight Control/Command.

If things go how I want them to, expect my character to be found planetside while, then maybe heading for a Starbase or a ship.
