How accurate a statement that is! As a teenager I was a complete moron who was certain I knew much more than my "ignorant" parents and most other "clueless" adults. Only when one becomes an adult does one realize how idiotic one was as a teenager. Fortunately, most will outgrow those years.

How about those teenagers who actually do know much more than their ignorant parents and most other "clueless" adults? Experiences might come with age, but learning from those experiences is not required. Some adults never do, which is why some children and teenagers will know more than the clueless adults.

If you need to be taught that hurting other people is bad, then you are in serious need of a brain transplant IMO.

No, you can't be taught right from wrong -- most people know the difference already. But you can be told, over and over again, that certain things don't really hurt people, or that it's okay to hurt people if it helps them in some way, or any number of other excuses to kill your conscience and do whatever gets you ahead.

I think that kid knows what he did was wrong if for no other reason that he sees the pain exhibited by the other. What he may learn if he is not punished is that he can get away with it.

Perhaps, but most kids know when they cause pain to another. I'm certainly not advocating our not teaching them the finer points through discipline, but kids generally know wrong from right, especially on so simple a level.

I would believe it would foster a superiority within the smacker.

He did an act and was not punished...not rewarded but not punished.

Thus he/she probably believes it's okay...maybe not something very good(no reward) but not something generally bad(no punishment).

If he gets a reward out of it, say he smacked the kid for candy and the other relented...then well it's not all over but something is now there saying if you have power...take what you want.

Reminds me of a few kids I know who go around knocking stuff down and when you lay into them they give you this strange look that's akin to fuck off.

Exactly. Even an infant knows what signs are associated with pain (remember the first time you had gas?) and knows those signs when he sees them, and especially when he causes them. But what kids are being taught now is that it's only bad if you get caught, you're responsible to no one but yourself, and your only responsibility to yourself is to have fun.

This by the way is one of my biggest pet peeves - that kids are taught their purpose in life is to have fun. What kind of a shitty purpose is that? Are we honestly going around telling kids that they shouldn't be worried about such things as personal responsibility because they aren't mature enough to handle it, that they shouldn't be worried about making themselves useful because they are good for nothing except having fun, and then wondering why they will far too often become bullies and sloths when they are told for years that they shouldn't be dealing with REALITY? Seriously, that's really fucked up. If your kids don't have anything useful to do, then why don't you just say that or better yet - put some effort into rectifying the situation. It has been proven consistently that people who have some sort of a job, or otherwise perform some useful purpose to the community, have far superior mental health to those who do not. And yet, we not only discourage kids from working, but we also fill their time up with extracurricular activites which accomplish absolutely nothing (except in those rare instances where people actually end up playing sports or music for a living). School is a waste of time - the vast majority of assignments are busywork. We (attempt to) restrict our children from seeing "adult" issues such as money, death, pornography and the like - sending a total message that amounts to "you are useless." And then we wonder why kids have low self-esteem, or why they will take out their frustrations on some other kid in an attempt to prove that he isn't in the lowest position on the totem pole.

There are a lot of stupid kids alright. But the big problem is that for every stupid kid there are at least two stupid adults directly responsible for that kid.

Don't be afraid! I'm Mexican American and I tell you the legit immigrants can't fucking stand the lazy ones and the ones who won't learn English and are involved with drugs. Traditionally Mexicans liked to be known for being hard-, if menially, working good people who minded their business and provided for their families. It's gotten worse, much worse. Now a lot of Mexicans are as bad as the poor apathetic blacks and whites. (Notice: not all blacks or whites are poor or apathetic, but they generally had a bad rep for drugs and welfare mooching that a lot of Mexicans have now joined). This annoyance plays over for a lot of lazy Americans by the legit immigrants, who generally respect hard-work, but I specify the Mexican immigrants because ALL of us get a bad rep because of them from generallizing idiots.

Racists. Evil. Once I brought my Israeli girlfriend to the States for a visit. She's ethnically Persian, fairly dark and in California (Santa Cruz) some folks thought she was Mexican. A number of people actually gave us shit for being mixed-race, and that freaked me out.

Bullies of any sort, of any age, of any gender. Whether it is physical, mental, emotional, I can't stand bullying.

People who insist on wallowing in ignorance, despair, or a sense of failure. I'm more just disgusted with these people than truly prejudiced against them.

Those are fairly rational prejudices, if you can see it that way. Here's my irrational one:

South Koreans.

Not Asians in general. I dig Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc. But every single person I have met from South Korea specifically has been a flaming asshole. Arrogant, selfish, lazy, backstabbing and corrupt. From the bullying braggart Sergeant Byun in Fort Carson, to the lazy, incompetent whiner Private Baeck, to Suga the bride that betrayed her blind American husband after securing visas and Social Security for her whole refuse-to-learn-English family... it's been luck of the draw that I met nasty South Koreans. I still have an open mind about North Koreans, since I've never met any of them. I hope I meet some nice Koreans since this makes me uncomfortable.

And I happen to like the accent of Asian women speaking English. I think it's sweet, and when I speak German or Hebrew with my American accent, people tell me it's "cute".

Good call on yip dogs. Now, you all may feel free to chastise me for this, but I actually have an interesting (slightly on-topic) story to relate:

About 10 years ago I had a bad, bad cold and only about $1.50 to my name. I was living in a spare house owned by my parents (they weren't rich; trust me, "fixer-upper" didn't come close to describing it) and had brought home a pack of Ball-Park franks, because that was the only thing available food-wise. Well, I managed to cook up a couple of those and was eating one sans bun while walking down the sidewalk on my way [i[back[/i] to the convenience store for a soda. (I was completely out of it with the cold.)

As I'm walking along this fenced in yard, I sneeze (which produces a distinctly unpleasant sensation in my sinus cavity) and this tiny little 60-decibel rat comes racing at me out of a side yard, hits the fence at 60mph, and bounces onto its back, rolls over -- and it's barking hella loud the whole time.

Now this irritates me somethin' fierce, so's I place a finger upside my nostril, inhale deeply, and launch what is known in academic circles as a "snot-rocket." This produced two simultaneous but very distinct sensations: "Wow, that was a really hefty snot-rocket!" and "Hey! My sinuses are kinda burning!"

As I'm processing these sensations, I see something hit the tiny barking thing amidships and bounce into the grass. What I see before me in the grass is a substantial chunk of mucus-endowed Ball-Park frank, not unlike the remains of same in my left hand.

It does get worse, I warn you now.



The dog at this point trails off in its barking. Sniffs the chunk of "meat" that has just exited my nose. And eats it. You were warned.

This is why I will always hate yip-dogs and will never again buy Ball-Park franks with a straight face.
