Do you get to telecommute?
How often?
1-day-per week myself, usually Wednesday. Had a conflict this week so it's Thursday instead.

an assistant district attorney, and a stenographer.

Re: Do you get to telecommute?
Telecommuting is for people whose work is non-physical. An engineer who has to oversee a physical operation cannot possibly telecommute, nor can a mechanic, nor can a shift supervisor, nor can a Q&A technologist, etc. It's a privilege reserved for certain IT people or for clerical types whose work consists solely of writing things.Chmee wrote:How often?

Re: Do you get to telecommute?
I don't think it's *quite* that narrow. Basically, if you do any job where the majority of your work is conducted through the phone and e-mail, you can telecommute. The question is what percentage of your work-week can be a telecommute.Darth Wong wrote:Telecommuting is for people whose work is non-physical. I do technical training, so obviously on a day when I'm scheduled to be at the front of the classroom, I can't telecom. On a day when I'm supposed to fly to London and do update training for partners, I can't telecom.
But I just finished 3 days of classroom teaching ... now I have a mountain of e-mail and future scheduling paperwork to catch up on. All I need for that is a secure link into the corporate network and a phone .... and my desk at home is a lot quieter and better-equipped than my desk at the office.

I hope it's not something you have to take your pants off for.Slartibartfast wrote:Telecommute? That's like teleconference right?
Seriously though, I actually have no idea what telecommuting is.
I believe in a sign of Zeta.

Don't think of it as "have to", but "want to". You want to take off your pants, because you are at home, at your desk, not a work. Why wear pants?Spanky The Dolphin wrote:I hope it's not something you have to take your pants off for.Slartibartfast wrote:Telecommute? That's like teleconference right?

Working from home, or at least not in 'the office' ... usually through a secure remote connection to your network (through a VPN in my case).Spanky The Dolphin wrote:So what is it?
My boss asks her staff to telecommute for 20% of their working time, because the company makes VPN products that aid telecommuting and we should know what our customers really want.
I just like it because I can work at home, crank up the stereo, sleep in a little later, and avoid the commute.

LOL! Well, working at home but having the same network resources you have while in the office. I can access my mail, shared network drives, internal website & databases, etc. etc.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Wait, that's all "telecommuting" means? Working at home?

I maintain plausible deniability on the issue of pants while telcomming .....InnocentBystander wrote:It's work, only without pants, just like I said!Chmee wrote:LOL! As a student, I can telecommute everything except my tutorials.
