Lightsaber... Progressive Knife from NGE. I think there was something from Ringworld by Larry Niven, but I forgot it's name.

Heat rod from several Gundam series. Can be used to slice, whip, or grapple. Very useful.

The monowire from Johnny Mnemonic.
Conrad Stargard's sword( Take a high quality katana, and give it an extremely thin layer of diamond in the center. Easiest to build if you have high end temporal technology.)
The laser grid in Resident Evil.

The Progressive Knife won't cut through everything, will it?

It can't cut through some materials, like certain Angel matter.

Zone of Force: Skylark Series

Technically, it's a shield, but when it's activated, anything inside the sphere is inside the sphere, and anything outside the sphere is outside the sphere. There is no in-between.

Lightsaber without a doubt.

Excalibur from the movie, I loved that green light that seemed to be contained within the blade.

Lightsabers and monofilament. Hehe. It's fun watching people get cut up. And then just fall into chunks of flesh.

Molecular Slicers. Breaks things apart at the molecular level though some kind of technobabble, but still great.

Matthew Mantrell's monofilament edged black sword from A Wizard in Rhyme.

The lightsa-----uh, beam swords from Gundam.

Any hand-to-hand weapon used by Owen Deathstalker when he was using the boost ability or the abilities bestowed by the Madness Maze.

It's gotta be the lightsaber. The inherent coolness of that weapon are unmatched by anything else in sci-fi.

Does Vorpal Blade qualify? It cuts stuff up pretty well but I don't know if it'll go through everything.
I prepared Explosive Runes today.

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought--
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

Ginsu knives have a bad reputation in the culinary community :)

The lightsaber was conceived of in about 1974, when Lucas began work on Star Wars. Mobile Suit Gundam's original air date was 1979, a full two years after Star Wars came out.

The lightsaber is still the classic energy blade :)

That's the joke...the beam sabers are a rip-off of the lightsaber . It's an in-joke among a group of us down here who are both Warsies and anime fans.

Starbreaker..

OF course, you need to aim the thing carefully (never hit the ground) or set it to the lowest setting possible. Otherwise you might find the planet you stood on get blown apart.
