If the Vulcans were so damn logical....
Why the heck did they join the Federation ? Or be in Star Trek anyway ?
Obviously, using their own logic, what with all the pseudoscience in Star Trek is completely illogical !
Also, they would know that wearing red shirts is illogical.
Srry if I'm ranting, but, if anybody was thinking of Star Wars vs. STar Trek, in direct combat, logically, the Vulcans would realise that they'd be dumb to stay in the Federation and would join the Empire. Logical, right ?

The Vulcans claim to be logical, but as we see consistently throughout the series, they are in fact merely following a wierd dogma of stoicism, meditation, and the occasional violent mating ritual. If Vulcans were actually logical, they would have realized by now that it is extremely unhealthy to go for any significant length of time without acknowledging their emotions, and they would have the capacity to dispense with outdated and unproductive traditions. Since they do not do this, we can conclude that the Vulcans are probably more dogmatic than Jonathan Boyd. Indeed, on might speculate that they are actually responsible for the United Federation of Pussies sad communist government. That being said, the Vulcans would probably regard the Empire as such a huge threat to tradition that surrender would not be an option. The real question is - how will they justify themselves when the Humans realize thatresistance is futile and call them on it?

Now that's a more logical explanation concerning those darned Vulcans: they're dogmatic !
As to the question about the Empire, the Vulcans could bloody well then join the rebellion... IF there was one. And we don't even know if Momtha will accept them.
Officialy, they'll be nothing more than a pest.
Btw, you have a nice quote from Alpha Centauri there.

I've noticed that people generally don't comment on each other's signatures. I prefer Yang's quotes actually:data_link wrote:You're the first person to notice.NieA_7 wrote:Btw, you have a nice quote from Alpha Centauri there.
Why do you insist that the human genetic code is sacred or taboo? It is a chemical process and nothing more. For that matter, we are chemical processes, and nothing more. If you deny yourself a useful tool simply because it reminds you uncomfortably of your own mortality, you have needlessly, and pointlessly crippled yourself.

Personally, my favorite quote is this one:
Resources exist to be consumed. And consumed they will be, if not by
this generation then by some future. By what right does this forgotten
future seek to deny us our birthright? None I say! Let us take what is
ours, chew and eat our fill.

Spock is the only logical Vulcan.... Period.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."
Just another example of the ST "Humans are better than everyone else" mentality.neoolong wrote:Ironically, he isn't even a full Vulcan.Soontir C'boath wrote:Spock is the only logical Vulcan.... Period.

Correction —the Vulcans WERE logical...

So it was logical to send ONE former agent who hadn't been doing anything like that for 17 years after him, instead of a team of current, better trained agents just so she can feel closure? Wouldn't that be a type of emotion?
And was it logical for T'Pol to choose Archer instead of better trained better equiped Vulcans?
And was it logical to cling to the belief that time travel is impossible and ignore any evidence like a fundie?
And was it logical to fight to the death over a mate? Even humans haven't done that in a long time.

The Vulcans appear to value logic above emotional response, but they do not always live up to their ideals. In fact, they frequently ignore logic during the shows.

Seems to be yet another case of a writer trying--and failing miserably--to depict a character that is supposed to be smarter than the writer him/herself...Master of Ossus wrote:The Vulcans appear to value logic above emotional response, but they do not always live up to their ideals. It's not my place in life to make people happy. Don't talk to me unless you're prepared to watch me slaughter cows you hold sacred. Don't talk to me unless you're prepared to have your basic assumptions challenged. If you want bunnies in light, talk to someone else.
This raises an interesting question - it seems that anytime we see a super-smart character in any TV series, they fall into one of two categories: A) emotionally repressed or B) eccentric (polite way of saying crazy or monumentally fucked up.) Is it just me, or do people suffer from the delusion that people who are smart can't possibly be normal?Enlightenment wrote:Seems to be yet another case of a writer trying--and failing miserably--to depict a character that is supposed to be smarter than the writer him/herself...Master of Ossus wrote:The Vulcans appear to value logic above emotional response, but they do not always live up to their ideals. Here's one thing that got me from the pilot for Enterprise: the dining scene. Archer and the redneck guy get their steak, and T'Pol later calls them and humanity "carnivores."
Wouldn't a Vulcan know that humans are omnivores, since they (as a group) eat meat and plants?
Unless it was meant as an insult. But is it logical to insult someone with an innacuracy? While Spock and Tuvok were able to jab people, I can't recall them resorting to hyperbole.
Or finally, is this proof that even Vulcans have bimbos?

Spite. An awful lot of people in Hollywood have made a ton of money despite having far worse grades than the smart kids in school who went on to become middle-class scientists. They use their position to rub it in: "Ha ha ha, I got a C's and D's and I'm making a million dollars a year to write this derivative, unimaginative garbage while you geniuses get fifty grand a year to work in a lab!!"data_link wrote:This raises an interesting question - it seems that anytime we see a super-smart character in any TV series, they fall into one of two categories: A) emotionally repressed or B) eccentric (polite way of saying crazy or monumentally fucked up.) Actually she is being illogical. Number one we are omnivores, so she is wrong.Sonnenburg wrote:Here's one thing that got me from the pilot for Enterprise: the dining scene. Archer and the redneck guy get their steak, and T'Pol later calls them and humanity "carnivores."

Number 2, if she tried to insult humans by saying omnivores then she is being illogical. Our bodies are made to be omnivores. Are tooth structure developed so that we could be. It is illogical therefore to go against it an limit ourselves to veggies. She is a bimbo.
