Killing an Elite with a grenade - possible?

Post by Jason von Evil »

Okay, this is really weird. The other day I was playing through Halo 2 SP and I was fighting in that area of New Mombasa, the part you get to after your Pelican crashes. Anyways, I was firing on these two elites that kept attacking and ducking behind an overturned bus. I was firing at this one elite, but was taking some hits myself, so I decide to give him and hus buddy alittle taste of sweet, sweet frag and thats when the weirdness happens. When I threw the grenade, it hit the elite right square in the head and bounced off. The funny thing is, as soon as it hit him, the four jawed freak dropped to the ground, the grenade had apparently killed him when it hit his noggin! My reaction was "What the..."

Has anyone else managed to do this or am I just fucking insane? He didn't have any shields, due to my frenzied battle rifle fire. I wasn't even aiming for his head, I was trying to get it close to him and hopefully his friend.

Weird... Maybe the granade does a really insignificantly tiny amount of damage, and this was just enough.

Or maybe it's just one of Halo 2's weird design issues (like being able to grenadeapult yourself)

Well, either way, the grenade killed him. When it went off, it send his body flying. :)

That's interesting. I could ask a few others I know that experiment with the SP part and MP part. I know you can shoot gernades and rockets alike, so they have some form of physical attributes in the game.

That's not weird. I could do that sense Quake I. I'm just dissappointed that I can't do a rocket jump easily. heh.

Ah yes that grenade/rocket thing was fun to discover.

I've done it in Half-Life, where grenades also do a tiny amount of damage on impact. I was facing off a marine with the MP5, and I had hit him several times but he hadn't gone down. A few more marines came around the corner to reinforce him. I was out of M203 grenades, so I lobbed a regular grenade over there. It hit him smack in the face and he died, to be gibbed by the explosion immediately afterward.

Is there any chance he was killed by stray fire from somewhere else?

I doubt it was the grenade hitting him that killed him. I mean you can plant a frag right at an elites feet and he'll barley even blink when it goes off, but one hitting him in the head kills him? Im guessing stray fire as mentioned above.

Most of the marines were preoccupied with the Jackals and Grunts.

Edit: There is a chance, but goddammit, don't cockblock my once moment of leetness!

I'm not talking about standard rocket jumps. I'm talking about flinging yourself the entire length of a map, warthog jump style. Collect a big sack of grenades in one place by repeatedy dying there, turn a Scorpion over on top of them, stand on it and set off the grenades. BOOM! you fly most of the way across a level in one go. Don't do it on Live though, as they've terminated people's accounts for it (you can paradrop yourself into the enemy base in CTF or Assault).

That sucks that they terminate your account. If I want to drop in on someones base, I grab a banshee, fly above their base and get out.

That usually results in people like me sniping you in the face before you drop that far.... :P :D
