Weird computer 'problem':

Post by Stofsk »

Last night as I turned off my computer, I dallied about for a time in the room, and the bloody thing switched itself on.

Huh? What the fuck?

And before the smartasses ask the obvious question: yes, I am sure I selected 'shut down' as opposed to 'restart'. I did this THREE TIMES, and it just switched itself on after about a minute being 'off'. What can cause this?

OK, assuming your computer isn't connected to a LAN and doesn't have a 'wake on LAN' function, my first WAG would be a short in the power switch/connection.

How is a virus supposed to affect a PC that isn't on?

It was connected to the router, but I don't know if it has a 'wake on LAN' function.

I've seen line spikes do wierd things like this. Your system might also be set to power on after power loss (in your BIOS), and if you have a quick brownout, that could trigger that function and turn your computer on.

My suggestion to you is get a UPS (uninterruptable power supply, aka "battery backup") if possible.
