N-Gage QD... really that crappy?

Post by Styphon »

thanks to Adult Swim, I recently acquired a free N-Gage QD, and I was wondering if anyone else who's actually used one thought that they've gotten a bit too bad a reputation. I mean, I HATE the game that came with it (Tony Hawk), but that's just cause I was no good at Tony Hawk anyway and my thumbs are a bit too big to be cleanly hitting the right buttons all the time... I'm sure if I had a strategy game or something it would be great. The screen is by far the best I've ever seen at that size... it's tiny, but Tony Hawk looks better on my N-Gage QD than it ever did with a TV and my PS2. But whenever I go online, all I can find in the way of reviews is "N-Gage suxxors!" or over-gushing reviews that obviously originate from Nokia employees...

anyway, I didn't see anything about the N-Gage in a quick search, so what does everyone really think? and what are the better games?

Well, you got a QD, so half of the problems aren't an issue anymore.

Secondly, all their launch games were crap. Until recently, their best stuff was ports of GBA games.

Nowadays, they do have some good games out there, but the N-gage still lacks the "Killer App" every system really needs(Although I would venture that Pathway to Glory comes the closest). Of course, now that the DS and the PSP are out, I have a feeling the N-gage probably has a shorter remaining lifespan than the Xbox.

I haven't played any N-gage games, so I can't give you any personal picks. I would suggest checking out Metacritic.

It's the cheapest Symbian Series 60 Phone out there. You do get a PDA Phone for $99 with contract :o Generally the QD is underrated - it's not a great gaming machine sure, but it's a pretty cool device - well built (feels solid, unlike my Axim X30), some basic functions, cheap.

I dunno. I've seen the screenshots of it, and... ugh. I'm still trying to hold out hope for it, though.

Yeah, it's not a good game system, but I guess it is a pretty good phone.

Problem is, Nokia wants it to be a gaming system. Better luck next time, and if you do try again, watch out for Sega Syndrome.

I don't particularly like the N-Gage, but it was pretty unfairly treated when it first came out. A lot of that was because Nokia gave a number of magazines and websites prototype examples of it to review, prototypes which lacked many features which where found in the basic production version. Those places duly wrote reviews, which often slammed the system for issues and missing features which would never affect anyone who actually went and bought.
