Weapons Nomenclature

Post by Kartr_Kana »

I was wondering if the numbers and letters in blasternames mean anything.
DL = Destructive Light? Pistols/DL-44 and DL-18
DH = Destructive Heavy? Carbine/DH-17
DC = Destructive Clone? Rifle/Pistol/Carbine DC-15s,m,l DC-17
E = Empire? Carbine/Rifle E-11 and E-3(used by ex stormie Boba Fett)
DLT = ? (Destructive Light T...)

Any ideas?

well Han Solo's blaster (DL-44?) is heavy blaster and Boba Fett is not ex-stromtrooper.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it's like real weapons. Companies that produce guns give them a series designator. M-16, M-4, AR-15, AK-47, etc... it's either just some arbitrary designator, or a contraction of th company that produces them quite often.

Hans blaster is still a pistol, and Destructive Light is the only thing that makes sense to me. Maybe the DL-18 came first and was less powerful then the DL-44 was made and it was a lot more powerful but since BlastTech was already calling its pistols DLs they just named it that.

How do you know that Boba is not an ex-stormie? We have 15 or more years that are unaccounted for. Plenty of time to go to the planet where he was in the begining of Tales of the Bounty Hunters, left joined the Empire left and became a Bounty Hunter.

Mobiboros that makes sense but BlastTech does not contract into DL real easy. :wink: I can see it for the E-11/E-3 because those are military weapons, but the DLs, DHs, DLTs? /shrug

Except that the only one of those assigned by the company is AR-15, the others are military designators, which at least tend to make a modicum of sense (well, sometimes) if you know the system.
For all we know, Wars manufacturer designations are completely arbitrary.
They may stand for everything from a serial number through acronyms for a key component to the initials of the lead designer's daughter.

I thought that the AK was the initials of the guy who designed the weapon?

Anyway the Idea was to try and find possible acronyms for the weapons.

Yes and no. The K does indeed stand for Kalashnikov. The A nevertheless stands for whatever automatic rifle is in russian, and either way it was NOT labelled by the company, but the russian military.

Sorry if that seemed derogatory. Feel free to speculate all you like. I was just pointing out that at least to my knowledge we have no clue as to which if any system Wars weapon designations use.

I know that we have no way of knowing but that does not mean we cannot try and find what they may be.

Automat, I believe.

As for letter designation, the letters don't have to equal words in any language whatsoever. One theory for the naming of the Jeep comes from the car's model number GP, which many people misinterpret as meaning "General Purpose". GP is really a Ford model designation. G is "Government-issue recon vehicle" and P is "18 inch wheel base"

Blastech models, for example, could just have D stand for something about blasters and L, H, or C mean some kind of identifying characteristic or included operating mechanism in that model.

[edit]Or, as with Kalashnakovs, perhaps DL is a reference to blaster pistols designed by a certain gunsmith who works for Blastech[/edit]

No way on all counts. And Boba Fett's carbine is the EE-3, not E-3.

They're just series designations, really. For example, the DL series started with the DL-12, continued with the DL-18, the so-called "Mos Eisley Special", the more compact DL-22 (which was made to counter the Merr-Sonn DD6, setting off the "Blaster war"), and led into the famous DL-44. Of course, the series kept going, what with the DL-56, but lets not get into that.

And yes, I did that from memory. :P

Well some companies use letter system that seem to not make sense. For example(I know its not a gun) the 2 & 1/2 Amphibious truck the company designates it a DUKW using their system of saying D = Year designed, U = Military, K = 4 Wheel Drive, W = Tandem(six) wheel powered

Avtomat Kalashnikova Model Year 1947. The inventor was Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov.

Really, anything is possible for how letters are assigned for weapons, though. Without knowing more about the language, we can't say whether it's a marketing concept, based off designer's names, intended to be a designation of weapon type, or something totally different (what species the weapon is intended for...).

No one particular source. Various books like the EGTWT, and the information just collates from there.

None that I know of.

EDIT: I recall a Star Wars encyclopedia though, an actual printed one. Some of this was from there. I think its called The Star Wars Encyclopedia (very original, I know) or something very similar.

Well, which edition? There are 7 or 8, I think, they reupdated it everytime a new movie came out. I have version 6. At any rate, sure, if I find something else I'll let you know, though much of the stuff about individual guns comes from novels. Though I'm sure there's an Internet repository somewhere, likely mirrored at TFN, since they harbour the likes of Saxton. :lol:

Saxton is a great Star Wars fan/physicist who runs this site: http://www.theforce.net/swtc/

Lots of people don't like him because he actually does calcs and finds evidence, as opposed to blindly gobbling down whatever asshats like Pablo Hidalgo throw at us.

Wrong. This place is jammed with Saxton fans, there are some haters in here, but they're flamebait. Darth Wong, who owns this place, is even credited in the ICS. A couple other SDnetters also have their names in the ICS. The AOTC one, at least.
