I admit, I'll talk shit when playing fighting games with my friends, but usually it has to be some momentous feat, like a 13 win streak in a round robin changing my character each match in Bloody War 3. And even then, I mean it in good fun. Very rarely do I play games online because, I'll admit it, I suck against others in FPSes or RTSes. Doesn't stop me from having fun, complimenting other players on killing me in some amazing way or cracking jokes about my death. And you can find good players, just try The Professionals or Firearms mods. Some quality players there. Additionally, my older brother plays SOCOM 2 and he's, well, not his asshole self. GGing in the lobby after a round, not grenade launcher whoring and actually playin in general. Its just you have to look hard anymore.

Yes, but in 1947, if you acted like a modern chickenshit-gamer at a poker game, you would get punched in the face. There was a corrective mechanism which does not exist today. Being banned from a server does not carry quite the message that a broken nose does.

A humble proposal Link goes to Userfriendly's site; rewire the 'quad damage' bit to every use of the word 'haxor' or 'aimbot!!' or similar. And within a few days, it will stop.

Clever idea, but a server mod to kill whiners still doesn't carry the same impact as a punch in the face :)

I think the spiked gauntlet to the crotch will have it's impact. If not, well, the asshats get removed from the gene pool.

Yeah, Day Of Defeat does actually seem to be pretty "As*hole" free. Its rare to find a game that isnt fool of PMS gamers nowadays.

I also play Day of Defeat, a World War 2 Halflife mod and can confirm there are alot less annoying kiddies playing the game probably due to the fact that teenagers generally find the WW2 era and weapons less interesting then more powerful modern day/scifi weapons and those that due generally have an interest in history and respect for veterns. I've found the best way to have an enjoyable online experience is to find a few servers with good admins and stick with them, or do what I did and join a clan with a good pub, become a fair admin and create a fun gaming environment. Every once in a while we have do melee only (no guns, gernades or pistols) with alltalk on.. its the funniest thing in the world, soo much smacktalk but all in good fun

Desert Combat is an awesome game, but unfortunately you do get the assholes in it.

The type of people who camp the aircraft and will shoot you if you dare to try and use it.

The type where if there is a 'no main base camping' rule, or at least, 'no main base camping unless you've taken all the control points' rule still break that. Now to elaborate on that, I mean pelting the main base with Scuds, or using tanks. I feel aircraft and helicopter strafing and bombing runs are fair game however.

You also get the hypocrite. They type who'll camp your main base and basically be a total dipshit, but if you decide to reply in kind you're a "Cheating, camping whore"
Don't Move you're surrounded by Armed Bastards - Gene Hunt's attempt at Diplomacy

I will not make any deals with you. I've resigned. I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own - Number 6

The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

I don't play online, so I can't speak from first-hand experience. But with in-your-facedness being mistaken as a statement of cool individuality, and reality TV and South Park being popular, I am not surprised. The days when a person online felt the need to mind manners, especially under duress, is long gone. Plus, modern computer games and multiplayer services seem to allow much more free expression outside the program, so if someone is inclined to be a bad sport, and cheat, it is actually possible to express this.

If little kids are the problem - and I think it is unfair to blame them, given that adults online may well be among the worst offenders - then their parents are to blame for not imparting a sense of decorum.

I think its hilarious, the difference between Jean-Luc Picard's character and the extreme manners of a few trekkie posters can sometimes be so disparate. An even less formal environment like a game universe may require a thicker skin and more durable ego as part of the package.
