Should the Rebels have killed the Empire?

Yes, it was evil.

Yes, but they should have stepped in when the warlords fought to avoid the death of civillians

No, they should have given up and settled down in a far away system

No, the Empire was better equipped to hold off the Yuuzhan Vong and other threats.

The Rebels should have never existed, because that would have saved billions on Alderaan and other planets.

Should the Rebels have killed the Empire?

Post by Alexus »

Should the Rebels have killed the order of the Empire and replaced it with chaos in which many more billions died? Should there have been Rebels at all?

Dark Empire sourcebook. It was his plan, the reason he was after the entire galaxy; he was going to make like Exar Kun with the Massassi only on a larger scale.

General rule with Star Wars, especially when dealing with the EU; just when you thought nothing could suck more than X, you read the X sourcebook.

Emperor Palpatine was a great man who has just been misunderstood due to his penchant for the occasional mass atrocity.

I mean, hell, we've all bombarded the occasional world that offended us. It's not like we can talk.

Hey just look at the chaos and death in Iraq. The same deal here, you can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs. Freedom is always more important than order and peace.

I agree in the long run yes freedom is more important than order and peace because in the long run freedom is a better guaranteer of peace than tyranny. As Jefferson said "those that exchange freedom for security will have neither".

The Empire needed to be overthrown, but the Rebels needed to put real honest-to-God leaders in their place - everything I've heard about the EU suggests that the post-Empire galaxy is pretty well a political clusterfuck.

Damn straight. And no, I intend no irony or sarcasm in my reply. The Soviet Union was orderly; Nazi Germany even more so. People still died, and in far greater numbers than in any but the most brutal state of anarchy ever to plague the face of the earth.

Who's to say that the people wouldn't enjoy giving their life force to their much loved emperor. Stupid Rebellion assuming everyone feels like them.

And furthermore, just how much in a galaxy of trillions would he need in order to sate himself? (What was he going to do, anyway?)

Like I said, Exar Kun with the Massassi. He was sapping their lives and Force potential long before he did his big "drain them all at once to preserve my spirit" thing.

He probably wouldn't have taken everyone in the universe, just a large amount. Say, the entire population of Coruscant?

Of course not. He was just going to dine on the useless worlds nobody would miss, like Endor and Aldera... oops.

The Rebels/New Republic were exhausted. They had too few capital ships and I'd imagine that their treasury was running dry. The Empire had been reduced to just a small sector of space, the Emperor and Vader were both dead. They probably figured the Empire would never be a threat again.

Just checkin' - I wasn't sure if he was going for simple aumentation of his power or full immortality, and how much energy he'd need to sap.

Actually, according to the DESB's values, he is going to suck, but there is no evidence it will cause massive damage to the guys being sucked. To be fair, who doesn't want immortality, and if it means taxing all my citizens a tiny weeny bit of the life force they aren't using anyway (everyone has a tiny bit of Force potential, but very few have it strong enough that it makes a difference they can feel, much less use) ... hell, it is better than taxes, which is taking away something they can use.

It is almost like saying he's going to take away the shit you excrete for his own ends.

The max rated draw, by the way, was only 10 million at a stretch. Which makes sense. Even if he wanted to suck more, there are limits to human physiology, or astral anatomy, or something like that. Something bad, if you suck too much.

In any case, the Rebels can't use that as a justification, since they knew nothing about this, at least until DE. Can't use something you don't know about.

That nevertheless, the Empire is a low bar to beat (read that: Rogue 9, and all the other people who seem to keep thinking I don't know that). It is an even lower bar than Bush :D

The problem is that the NR obviously can't jump over a bar set 3cm above the ground. See Yuuzhan Vong war and all the smaller inconveniences over the years that should never even have made the sector-news.

So while someone should probably have arranged for the Empire to go down, the NR is not qualified to do so. That's not a statement on the Empire more than it is one of the NR.

My #1 rule of revolution: "Before you burn 100 trillion lifes in one, at least make sure your alternative is really better."
Of course not. He was just going to dine on the useless worlds nobody would miss, like Endor and Aldera... oops.
Alderaan was partially selected for its importance to the Rebels and its high visibility.

Oh, about stepping in when the warlords started fighting, to put it simply, they can't. It is a war where all those millions of ships are whittled down. They probably hid out in the corner and waited for it to finish before moving on.

Alderaan was an influencial core world. It was not some little place. It would be like THe US blasting the whole state of New York to bits.

Not even close. Alderaan was high visibility because of the arts and culture that came out of it. The population of Alderaan was insignifigant to the population of the Galaxy.

Sarcasm, folks. I'm well aware of the importance of Alderaan, and hence why Tarkin was perfectly justified in blasting that nest of traitors into teeny-weeny bits.

Now, to take a serious approach to it... the Emperor was an evil cocksucker who viewed his citizens as expendable extensions of his will and policies.

So yeah, the Rebels were right to take him down.

That they lacked the resources to implement a proper government afterward is tragic, but it doesn't lessen the fact that Palpatine needed to go.

It's not like they could develop a proper governmental infrastructure for a takeover... they were a revolution, for Christ's sake. Their priorities were rightfully survival and inflicting harm upon the enemy.

Why? It may not have been a Coruscant but it wasn't tiny either. I simply used New York because it is one of the 13 original colonies of the United States.
