This was good. I especially liked the overcomplicated version of "when the shit hits the fan" that you put in. Feddies probably do think like that. Methinks the Feddies would be more willing to negotiate with the rebels later if they'd let Picard go, but it's not my fic and I don't know where you're going with it.

Please keep this going. A good rebellion in the UFP is something I and I'm sure a lot of other SD.net members have wanted to see for some time.

Fly back nice and peacefully to dock, and then beam from the shuttle straight to engineering and disable the ship. Either way the Feds should take the rebs a bit more serious after this incident.
I really like this storyline, had I been a SF officer I would have joined the Rebs on the spot.
You probably should try to sharpen the arguments on the Federal side a bit, civil war becomes much more intresting when it is the Good guys vs the Good guys - or like in SW the Bad guys vs the even worse guys with everyone else caught in the crossfire. Pointing out that the changes in the Federation have taken place with the concent of the people, according to the laws and were in many cases good ideas.
In this Reds vs Rebs one should remember that Reds have a nasty talent for winning savage civil wars. Perhaps we will get a USSPF when the smoke clears?

Chapter 5

Some people live an entire lifetime and wonder if they have ever made a difference in the world, but the Marines don't have that problem.
--Ronald Reagan

Helena IV.

Lieutenant Dan Hathaway was at one time a Starfleet Marine. He still considered himself a Marine even as he did not consider himself apart of the Federation and thus a part of Starfleet.

Hathaway had been a member of the Security Forces of Starfleet for six years and had served his ship and his commanders with a quiet pride and remarkable precisions. It was for this, after the Dominion War broke out, that he was selected for a Z-team.

The first six months of the war had shown the Federation that her ground forces were totally inadequate for war against the Jem-Hedar. Even if Starfleet’s ships were on a roughly equal footing with the Delta Quadrant enemy, her ground forces were suffering defeat after defeat.

Most in the command structure were content to just increase the amount of Klingon allied help in ground operations, others were not content to do that. So Lt. Hathaway and a few hundred other promising soldiers were sent to Angosia and trained with Subhadar Danar in weapons and tactics.

The Angosian Commando’s had been legend in the Tarisian Wars ten years ago and their Commandos had few peers. Since the Federation was actively trying to recruit more and more members in those early days of the war, the Angosians were more than happy to train new Starfleet Marines in what they knew of ground combat in exchange for finally gaining membership into the Federation.

Hathaway and others were drilled and trained by the super soldiers of Angosia. Hathaway learned history on maneuver warfare from Angosia, Earth, Qonos, and other cultures. He learned the tactics of Close Quarters Battle and how to fight in an urban environment. He learned methods of hand to hand combat and patrolling techniques. Lt. Dan Hathaway learned how to be a Marine.

He and his peers trained on Angosia for six months before reentering the war and as soon as the Z-teams went into action, command knew that they worked. Hathaway participated in numerous special operations. Snatch jobs, raids, point destruction missions and an occasional rescue job. Hathaway’s team accomplished mission after mission and soon his battle honed team was considered the best of the Z-teams.

Hathaway fought for his nation as any Marine would, but after the war ended, it seemed that history liked to repeat itself, as the Federation wanted to decommission the Z-teams and send Hathaway back to regular Security duty. He was back in such a post when Leyton’s agents had contacted him and swayed him to Leyton’s side. Hathaway had then pulled together his old unit and disappeared from Starfleet, bringing almost all of the Z-teams to the rebel cause.

Now, at Helena, Dan Hathaway was about to put his battle hardened skills to the test again with a mission so bold that when Pressman and Maxwell had first proposed it, even Hathaway himself doubted the two men were sane.

He and eight men of his Platoon were in the main hangar with Chief Pilot of the Enterprise Christopher Jensen. The bulky, middle aged man had come across to the rebel cause months earlier and had been advised that if the Enterprise embarked on a mission to Helena IV, that his service for the cause would be needed.

Jensen readied his shuttle and Hathaway loaded up his men. The Marines dressed like their Lt., jumpsuits and load bearing vests, and loaded down with weapons and other equipment, the Marines still slid onto the shuttle with quiet grace. One squad of Marines, two large cargo boxes and Lt. Hathaway boarded the ship and Hathaway nodded to Jensen as he strapped himself in. Hathaway felt a lurch as the shuttle picked itself off the hangar deck and moved off into the sky of Helena IV.

Jensen took the ship out of the atmosphere at the roughly same exit vector that the shuttle used to arrive at the complex and after about twenty minutes the wedged shaped shuttle gained orbit and Hathaway could see his target.

Jensen used the shuttle’s comm. to check in with the Enterprise and received approach instructions to the upper docking bay. That little piece of info pleased Hathaway, since he needed to be as close to his objectives as possible if this mission was to be successful. He was also glad that Captain Shelby didn’t wish to chat with Picard via the comm. as they approached. They had prepared a digital sequence of Picard’s voice to cover that possibility, but if forced to use it for any length of time, Hathaway knew the ruse would fail quickly.

As the shuttle approached the hangar of the large Sovereign class ship, he slipped out of his seat next to Jensen and moved aft to where his men waited. He gave them a quick visual inspection and said, “30 seconds. Any questions?”

Of course no one had a question. They had drilled the entire mission in every detail. They knew what to do and what to do if any myriad of problems arose. So they sat there in silence as the seconds ticked away. It wasn’t long until the vibration of the shuttle settling down in the bay rang through out the shuttle and the buzz of the boarding ramp immediately sounded.

Chief Pilot Jensen walked past the commandos and out down the ramp. Hathaway lost sight of him as he rounded the shuttle and presumably headed towards the Deck Officer over by the control room.

Hathaway tried to stay patient but time always seem to slow down in critical moments like this. After what seemed like an hour but was perhaps more like a few minutes, the small signal light on Lt. Hathaway’s wrist blinked and the Marines headed down the ramp so quietly no one knew they were there.

Jogging down a line of shuttle craft, Hathaway saw Jensen and the Deck Officer by the control room and turbo lift, center on the far wall. Jensen, as planned, was distracting the Deck Officer while Hathaway and his team made for the ladder well that lead to the maintenance area below the shuttle bay.

With an ease that only training and practice can impart, the two lead Marines dropped down the ladder well as the next two took up supporting positions. Moments latter, the two supporting Marines dropped below and the next two gave support. Two more repetitions more and only Hathaway still remained on the hangar deck. He glanced over towards Jensen one last time just in time to see Jensen knock the Deck Officer out and start to drag the limp form towards the shuttle craft before Hathaway jumped down the ladder well after his troops.

Below the hangar bay, as with almost every Starfleet ship, was a large maintenance bay with various lifts to bring shuttle’s to and from the bay. Unless work was actually being done on a shuttle, the maintenance bays were usually deserted of crew. Thanks to Jensen scheduling no maintenance for today, it was the perfect insertion point for the team.

Once the whole team was in the maintenance bay, the squad split into two teams. Lt. Hathaway went with the Alpha team to the starboard Jefferies tube while Sergeant Hoshi took the Bravo team to the port. Lt. Hathaway glanced at this chronometer and saw that they were right on schedule and motioned for his team to move into the maintenance tubes that criss-crossed the deck and led to his objective.

*************************************************************

Captain Elizabeth Shelby was getting impatient. The shuttle with Ambassador Picard and Lt. Wallace had landed a few minutes ago and she was expecting not only the ambassador but her tactical officer on the bridge any moment. She was curious to see what had stopped the day’s negotiations only after two hours and what Picard had to report on the general situation.

She paced the bridge a few more times before turning to Commander LeForge. “Commander, where is Picard?” She asked.

“He might have stopped off at his cabin before returning to the bridge, Captain.” He replied. “Shall I go escort him to the bridge?”

Shelby sighed, “He would do that to me, wouldn’t he.” She sat down at her command chair and keyed a comm. button on the armrest. “Ambassador Picard, please report to the Conference Room.”

She got back up and moved towards the rear of the bridge telling her XO, “Commander LeForge, you have the bridge, I’ll wait for the Ambassador in the Observation Lounge.”

She disappeared into the turbo lift before she could hear his reply.

*************************************************************

Lt. Dan Hathaway glanced at his chronometer again. Moving his men and equipment down the maintenance areas and Jefferies tubes was taking longer than he thought. He started slightly ahead of schedule and now was slowly falling behind. He needed to arrive at his Objective Rally Point just outside of his Primary Target on time so that both Sgt. Hoshi’s and his attack happened simultaneously.

He kept moving down the corridor, a two man element at point then the Lt. and a two man trailing team. The equipment box was with the second element leaving the front group free to maneuver if they encountered anyone during their movements but it tended to slow down the two men carrying it.

As if that stray though that ran through Hathaway’s mind triggered the event, two engineering crewmen stepped out of a cross section twenty meters ahead of the forward element. Before the two men could even see the approaching Marines, let alone give off any sort of warning, two pulses from phaser rifles streaked out and hit them dead on in the chests, throwing the two men to the deck.

The point two Marines hustled up to the pair and secured the cross isle and checked the bodies. Right behind them was Lt. Hathaway. He checked the status of the two crewmembers and then ordered Corporal Rentin to stash the bodies. At this point, the Marines had their weapons on stun so the two unconscious crewmen were lucky, thought Hathaway. But he couldn’t risk them coming to before he secured his objective.

After wasting three irreplaceable minutes in binding and hiding the unconscious men, the squad moved off again. Even thought they were a bit behind, Lt. Hathaway knew they were quickly approaching their rally point.

A few turns and a long stretch of corridor later, they arrived at the exit of a maintenance crawl way back into the regular interior of the ship. Hathaway helped the Assault Team secure the cargo box and he noticed that it was a lot lighter after the men had emplaced some of the charges along the Jefferies tube.

The explosives were a back up plan that Hathaway hoped he wouldn’t need, but as the old saying goes ‘better to have a back up plan and not need it, then to need a back up plan and not have it.’

For the last time, Hathaway glanced at his chronometer and saw that the squad didn’t have anytime to reorganized, the allotted time to attack was only one minute away. He looked up at his men and saw that they were already in position for the assault, though he still felt they could have used a breather. Getting here was only the easy part of this plan.

The small chronometer on his wrist beeped quietly, but in the cramped space of the Jefferies tube, it sounded obnoxiously loud. It was time and the team wasted none of it. Corporal Rentin threw open the hatch way and he and his Lance Corporal flooded to the right while Lt. Hathaway and the rest ran for the left side of the room.

The large room was crowed with equipment and the aft side of the room was dominated by four impulse reactors and various monitoring consoles. There were four crewmembers in the room as well and the utter look of shock as the five men in black jumpsuits and weapons came streaming out of the Jefferies tube would have been priceless if Lt. Hathaway had the time to enjoy it.

Lance Corporal Hemingway took down two of the Starfleet personnel, Hathaway himself dropped another. He was busy checking his assigned area that he didn’t see who shot the fourth but he heard the phaser pulse ring out and the thud of the body hitting the metal deck.

With in seconds, reports of ‘clear’ sounded through the Starboard Impulse Engine Room and Hathaway sent the rear element to cover the main door out while Rentin set to work retrieving the cargo box with their gear before sealing the Jefferies tube.

Lt. Hathaway stood in the middle of the room gathering the bodies of the crewmen then activated his comm. unit and said quietly into the mic. “Objective A secured.”

There was a brief burst of static then Hathaway heard Sgt. Hoshi’s reply, “Objective B secured. ETA to ‘hardwire’, one minute.”

Hathaway looked towards the engineering consol and saw that Lcpl Hemingway heard the transmition. The young Marine nodded back to his Lieutenant and motioned with one of his fingers to say that he’d be ready in one minute as well.

“Very well,” He said to himself as he switched frequencies. “Anvil, this is Hammer. We have a go in one minute.” He switched off the transmitter since there would be no response to give away ‘Anvil’s’ position and moved towards the engineering consol.

The 'shit hit the fan' joke is, by now, a ST classic. Usually in super long and complicated 'Data speak'. But its one of my fav's so I stuck it in there. The rebels are Starfleet after all and alot of the same BS they're fighting against will still surface in them in degree's.

Nice raid but I have a few nits.
Don't the Sovvies have a rear shuttlebay? It would be a very long journey to reach the Impulse engines from there, the warp core is much closer and is a singel target for the entire team. It is rather important since the teams have to reach their targets in a very narrow time frame, they have essentially the time it would take Picard to wander casually to the brideg and report all is well. That is a hard time frame to manage in corridors and tubes.
Firing Phasors on a ship at a high level alert could trigger dozens of alarms. IMPO it would be either a knife job, sorry redshirts but you are used to it by now  , or some similar stealthy weapon.
Shelby asking where the ambassador is, normaly IIRC they ask the computer that and it coughs up the answer rapidly. Having the shuttlepilot wander around the ship with Picard's com badge switched off would be a good deception though.

Sovvies as per Nemesis have a shuttlebay at the rear end of the saucer directly between the impluse engines.

Eh, Shelby never asked the computer where Picard was, just LaForge. As advanced as the Enterprise's computer is, it's still a computer and it isn't going to say that Picard's not around unless someone explicitly asks it.

There are two shuttle complexes in a Soveriegn Class ship. One, as Crazedwrath mentions, is on the aft end of the saucer section between the two impulse eninges. We see it in Insurections. The other is in the traditional spot on the aft end of the secondary hull. Hathaway is relieved when the shuttle goes for the 'main shuttle bay' which I figured would be the top bay since that's where we see Picard take a shuttle out in Insurections.

By the cut-away MSD, the maintenence bays under the hangar are on deck nine which is about one level up from the edge of the saucer and has, according to the cutaway, the turbo lift horizantal shaft and other 'ship systems' on it, so I figure that it is possible to have Impulse control on this level too plus a nice network of Jefferies tubes and other maintenence corridors.

Firing Phasors on a ship at a high level alert could trigger dozens of alarms. IMPO it would be either a knife job, sorry redshirts but you are used to it by now  , or some similar stealthy weapon.

Picard doesn't have a comm. badge though Lt. Wallace does. I'm aware of the time crunch and ship security, I'm going to deal with it in the next chpt.

As for the phaser blasts, I don't think that there will be as high as a security system in the maintence crawlways as there is in the regular interior. Thus a small loop hole for weapons fire in the tubes. Out side, in the control room, yes there would be an alarm and there will be in the next chapter.

Yeah, I checked out som crossections, that bay is much better placed.

This is an excellent fic. I hope an ending is planned. Interesting that it 'proves' that Starfleet's policy of dumbing down the military is smart for internal governance, as long as they could keep it dumb. They didn't follow the Angosian example of imprisoning their veteran grunts as well as the too-independent admirals.

Chapter 6

Hard pressed on my right. My center is yielding. Impossible to maneuver. Situation excellent. I am attacking.
--Ferdinand Foch

USS Enterprise, Helena system.

Elizabeth Paula Shelby, Captain of the Enterprise, sat in the comfortable chair at the head of the table in the observation room just behind the bridge waiting for the arrival of Ambassador Picard.

He had arrived by shuttle over fifteen minutes ago and had still not arrived to the conference room to fill her in on what the hell was going on.

To say that she was irritated was an understatement and her mood was only fated to get worse. With a sudden blare, the alert alarm went off and she heard the XO call her to the bridge over the intercom. The Captain rushed to her station and ordered an immediate report.

“Captain,” Started Geordie, her XO, “two minutes ago, internal sensors intercepted an unauthorized transmition on Deck 9, aft section 41-26.”

“Impulse control?” Asked Shelby.

LaForge nodded, “Yes ma’am. We’re sending a security team there now to investigate. We tried to contact the operations team there but the comm. is either down or they can’t answer. Being in the situation we are, I took the precaution of sending in a security detail. Also, I can’t raise anyone at Main Shuttle Bay One. Ambassador Picard isn’t wearing a Comm. Badge but Lt. Wallace should be and the computer say’s he’s not aboard. I’ve sent a team to investigate.

Captain, I’m worried about boarders at this point. We may have been boarded and are even now being sabotaged.” He finished his report.

Before Captain Shelby could respond a new alarm went off on the bridge. It was another internal alarm, and glancing at the security display, Shelby and LaForge knew his report was correct.

“Weapons fire in starboard and port Impulse Control Rooms.” Geordie confirmed. “Dispatching more security to Deck 9.”

Shelby sighed, “Very well, Commander. Get three teams to port and another two to starboard. We’ll smash these saboteurs. If we’re lucky, perhaps Leyton himself will be aboard.” She smirked.

*************************************************************

“Lieutenant, ‘hardwire’ is complete.” Lcpl Hemingway reported from the aft control station.

Hathaway nodded and motioned for Hemingway and Rentin to move to flanking positions. He knew that security teams were enroute; he was already linked into most of Enterprise’s data networks, and needed all of his men in place to repel the attack coming.

He wasn’t nervous about it. He and his Z-teams had fought against worst odds and in worse situations. Standard Starfleet Security posed little worries for Hathaway. They’d come running in a tight group without cover, right smack in the middle of Hathaway’s Marines fire zone.

A soft whistle from Rentin notified Hathaway of the coming Security detail and true to form, the five man team walked straight down the corridor in a tight nit group. A concentrated barrage from the Z-team took care of the threat and Hathaway repositioned himself for the next wave.

*************************************************************

Captain Bateson sat with his fingers steepled in contemplation, staring at the image of the Enterprise on his main viewer. A casual observes would think that he was daydreaming, but when his communications officer reported the go code and counted down the one minute count down, Morgan Bateson moved into action.

“Helm, stand by for a starboard approach. Tactical, auxiliary power to shields. Initiate attack sequence for targets AB1-AB8.” He ordered his crew, then reached down and touched a comm. button.

“Wave Rider, hold on to something. We’re going in fast and hot, have your squads ready.” He touched the LCAR’s again, “Attention all decks and all crew. Attack plan is a go, all boarding parties stand ready,”

He shifted his attention over to his comm. officer who was still counting down, “We are decloaked in ten seconds, good luck.” He shut down the comm. and turned his attention back to the main viewer.

“Helm, decloak, attack plan Bravo.” He ordered just as the comm. officer’s count reached zero.

*************************************************************

A third alarm went off in as little as three minutes and Captain Shelby thought she’d scream. Now what could be happening? She turned her head to the Con as her helmsmen reported.

“Captain, Federation ship,” She paused for half a second, disbelief entering her voice, “decloaking off the starboard quarter.”

“Federation?” Asked Commander LaForge.

One of Lt. Wallace’s security officers reported from tactical, “Captain, sensors show it’s the Coronado. She was reported missing weeks ago.”

A worried look came over Shelby’s face, “Raise shields.” She ordered.

The tactical officer punched a few keys, all with a very negative sound to them. “Captain. Main power is off line. Shields not responding.”

Shelby watched the main viewer as the information sunk in and waited for the attack. She saw a small object detach and shoot towards her ship with remarkable speed.

“Brace!” She practically screamed.

LaForge reported from the port station, “Captain, they’ve detached their wave rider. It’s vectoring in to our dorsal hull.”

He scanned the computer screen again, “It’s docked.”

Shelby watched the Coronado streak in to the starboard side of her ship and now knew why the Nova class ship was not firing on the Enterprise. “Prepare to repel boarders.” She said quietly.

*************************************************************

Outside the Enterprise the small survey ship cruised along side the larger ship and moved towards the main gangway centerline on the saucer section. With amazing grace the Coronado slipped up to and then docked with the Sovereign Dreadnaught.

As soon as there was a hard dock, dozens of Marines stormed aboard. In the lead, the Z-teams methodically took key corridors and held them until other units came up and relieved them.

Without proper prep time, the crew of the Enterprise were quickly overwhelmed and fell back again and again. The poor security detail kept waiting for the security force fields to channel the boarders and to keep them from sensitive area’s, but Lt. Hathaway’s team had physically disconnected the main power and none of the regular security protocols would work now. That had the effect of disorientating the security detail; frankly, they didn’t know what to do with out them.

On deck 22, C team was slowly making its way from the Waverider through the Enterprise’s Jefferies tubes towards Main Engineering. The twelve Marines were placing a charge on major power junctions and control nodes as they went. If they couldn’t take main engineering, they’d cut them off from the networks and rob Enterprise of any of the power the warp core could deliver. They were hoping to take engineering whole, though. They wanted the ship, after all.

After only a few minutes since ‘hardwire’ Dan Hathaway was watching the timid security man of Enterprise try to get a bead on him with a quick look around the corner he was hiding behind. If things went right, this would be the last team Shelby would send here.

The Lt. heard a phaser blast but saw no beam or pulse come in his direction. Before he could even think of what happened, one of his other Z-teams came around the corner and motioned the ‘all clear’ sign in his direction.

Hathaway moved from cover and came up to the Marine. “Good job, Zimmer. Everything go as planned?” He asked.

“As close as it gets.” Reported the large Ensign. “The shippies did alright as they secured behind us. Main corridors are secured and we’ve mag-locked most of the major compartments on main deck from the gangway to here. The shippies are moving towards the hangar deck. C team reports that they’ve secured the ejection system and are moving to main objective. We need to secure the transports still and then the bridge.” He said with the tone and flippancy of reporting the status of his lunch selections.

“Good,” Said Hathaway. “Break a fire team off to reinforce Rentin and have the rest follow me.” He ordered and moved off down the corridor making Zimmer’s squad hurry to catch up.

*************************************************************

Captain Shelby sat in her command chair looking defeated as LaForge approached her. “Security reports boarders on main deck from starboard gangway back to the Impulse control rooms. They’ve used some sort of lock on most of the doors and a lot of the crew are trapped and unable to fight.”

“At least we know why they went for the Impulse Control now. No shields, no weapons, no transporters, no force fields. They’ve planned this pretty well, didn’t they?” She pondered aloud.

There was a comm. beep and the Operations Manager reported an incoming hail. “Put it on screen.” Ordered Shelby.

A lean, good looking man appeared on the screen. He wore some sort of black military garb and the Captain instantly recognized the corridors and room behind him as the security room on deck 3.

“Captain Shelby.” He said. “This is Lieutenant Hathaway of the United Federation of Free Planets. We have captured your ship. All that remains is the Bridge and Engineering and even then we have disconnected the control systems to both. As we speak, we are restoring power to the transporters.

Surrender now, Captain, and we will beam you and your crew to the surface. Force us to take the rest of the ship and we will beam all resisters into space.” His face was taunt and serious through the whole speech. No emotion showing at all.

LaForge motioned to her and she hit the mute, “Options?”

The XO looked drawn and tired, “Captain, I have Chief Engineer Hanson on a low priority intercom. I don’t know how long it will last or how long until they find it.”

“Put him on.” She said immediately.

With a burst of static, a male voice came through the bridge speakers, “Captain, this is Hanson. They disable the ejection system and most of our control conduits. We can still manually start a breach but they’ve got teams moving in on us. So if you want to order us to do that, I need to hear it now.”

“Negative, Commander.” Shelby said. “Do you still have an ODN to deflector control?” She said instead.

The silence over the comm. showed that the engineer didn’t know where she was headed with this. “I think.” He said after a moment.

“Good. Modulate a distress signal with the deflector. It doesn’t have to be big, but we brought reinforcements with us in case of an emergency. I think this qualifies.” She finished and then hit the button for the traitor waiting on her on deck 3.

“Lt., this is Captain Elizabeth Paula Shelby. Enterprise surrenders. I repeat, Enterprise surrenders.” She glanced over to LaForge, “Commander, release security override on the turbolift.”

She looked back to the image of the traitor, “We are unarmed and expect you to fulfill your promise.” She said.

“Of course.” Was all he said.

The few minutes waiting for the turbolift and its occupants were probably the longest minutes of Shelby’s life. She had had to swallow a lot of pride to surrender just to give time for Hanson to get the SOS off. It was humbling for her to ask for help from anther ship, even worse because her own was captured. But she was a Starfleet Officer and if she had to swallow her pride and be humbled, then so be it.

She had thought that she composed her self for the emotionless Marine that she thought would emerge from the turbolift, but when the doors finally opened and she saw who was to take command of her ship, her composer evaporated completely.

Wearing the old tunic style of Starfleet uniform that had not been in use for over forty years, Erika Benteen stepped onto the bridge. Her soft face led to her attractiveness, but the hardness in her eyes betrayed the warrior that lay inside.

“Benteen. You traitorous bitch. I should have known you would still be nipping at your master’s heel.” Shelby blurted out.

“Elizabeth,” The dark haired woman said, “So good to see you.” Benteen turned to Hathaway as he exited the turbolift with six of his Marines. “Lt., escort the Captain and her bridge crew to transporter room two. Beam them down to Helena as agreed.”

“Aye, Captain.” He responded and she watched with a triumphant sparkle in her eyes as the old bridge crew left and hers arrived.

As they took their posts she commanded, “Send a signal to Helena. The Free Enterprise is secured and will be ready to move shortly.

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Yeah, double entandra(?). They 'freed' the Entrprise. They want free enterprise, they see themselves 'freeing' the Federation.

Not bad but a captain rebeling bacuse he does not get cigars and whiskey, and because they gave him new ship is a little to stupid.

And knowing Shelby she would destroy Enteprise. Not to mention that she would contact the shuttle and ask how the negotiation have gone, if anything is all right etc.

But nice.

Don't listen to Kruk, in between incoherent statements he proves that he obviously doesn't comprehend whats going on.

Bateson was from Kirks time. A decidedly different Federation, so really the small things would just be a constant reminder of where he is. Those are the symptoms not the disease. Bateson is the perfect background character to illistrate rebellion against the commies in the 23rd centurary.
and because they gave him new ship is a little to stupid.
Kirk stole his old ship, for a personal reason at that. Bateson couldn't 'steal' his ship, they scapped it. In Bateson's view, it was only a decade or two old, while the beuracracy thought it was over a hundred.

You seemed to miss the part where the sabatours disconnected the main power. These aren't Klingons or silly people, they're Starfleet spec ops who know how Starfleet ships work and how their operated. They planned their mission and rehearsed it.

By the time Shelly knew she was lost, she'd lost the ability to destroy the ship except for some jurry rigged thing, as mentioned by the Chief Engineer.

Sorry, I haven't seen those episodes. What's the history between Kirk and Bateson?
Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.

Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.

They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)
