What games are good for the PS2?

I just bought a PS2 and I need a little help finding good games for it. Is there any games that the SD.net community would suggest? In case you are wondering, my game list includes:
Jak II
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Ratchet and Clank:Going Commando

Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas

If you like a Space shoot em up, the Battlestar Galactica game isn't bad.

For racing, you have Gran Turismo 4, or even 3 if you're on a budget.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is a great game (though you could always be "patient" and wait for the PC version which will probably have somewhat better graphics, controls and customizable music) but as always violent and worthy of its M rating.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Unless you hate large amount of dialogue and cutscenes. Then this is a horrible game for you.

Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal is another excellent game in the series and this time offers online play as well.

SOCOM II is another good online game, and nice and cheap too.

Burnout 3 is full of adictive arcade style racing.

Metal Gear Solid 3.

Forget the other ones, they're irrelevant now, MGS3 is the king.

Also, Ace Combat 5, for all your flying around blowing shit up needs.

Star Wars: Battlegrounds is fun. Not the most brain-intensive game in the world, but you get to play CIS/Republic or Rebel/Imperial. And the scope of the Battle of Hoth is a very nice change from previous in-game incarnations of that battle.

Edit: I meant Battlefront, sorry, Battlegrounds is the AoE-based RTS...

Star Wars: Battlefront is fun.
Also, even though I'm not a fan of the cartoon, or much of a fighting game fan, Dragonball Z: Budokai 3 is a fun game.

Mindless, Wade through hundreds of soldiers like they're nothing action is best served by Dynasty Warriors 4 or Samurai Warriors. If you're a masochist, there is R-Type final and the days of gameplay needed to unlock all the ships. Sad thing is I've got about 76 of them.

Devil May Cry - It's old (relatively) but damn it's fun. A nice, stylish action game. Ignore DMC 2, but i've heard good things about 3. Stick to DMC 1 to ensure a good game.

Tiger Woods GOlf 2005 - I didn't know golf games could be fun but they can! And the character customisation is brilliant.

Def Jam: Fight for New York (Def Jam 2) - Rappers and a fighting game combined. Better than i expected as it has a solid fighting system which ensures there aren't any cheap victories. A half decent story in 1 player and quite good for multi player smack down. Nice character customisation as well, and it builds as you go through the story. I started as a pasty white boy and ended up covered in "ink" and so "iced up" my opponents were blinded by the bling!
I dislike rap music but this game got me speaking gangsta after a few days.

WWE Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain (SD:5) - the best of series and better than the recent SDvsRAW. if you like wrestling this is the game for you. Another with intensive character customisation and the first to have a good career mode. Get a multi tap and youve got a solid party game as well.

The Grand Theft Auto games are also a must due to the massive amount of freedom and replayability

For PS2 I would say that indeed SW:Battlefront as mentioned above, is great. SW:Bounty hunter is acceptable also, but gets boring.
An acceptable Trek game FPS, I can't recall the name, but it is set onboard
Voyager might suit you, but avoid ST:Shattered Universe.
Never having played the newest hit game GTA: San Andreas I can't offer
an opinion.
For sports games, I would say Madden for football, and All star baseball
for baseball. I'm not into basketball, so I can't say what's good or not.

GT games are good for racing should you like that sort, There are also
good RPG's although some debate as to how good PS2 FF games are.
A good thing about PS2 is that you can also play PS1 material, but you
will need a PS1 memory card to save any data. Yes, most PS1 games
are old news, but there are still some good games, and they are easy
on your wallet, I don't recall seeing any for more than $15.
Anyhow, people can give you opinions all day, but you of course
will come to your own decision about what is good or not.

star ocean till the end of time should be good,.
lotr the third age is an awsoem game. i have it for the gc thoguh. it is o0n the ps2 as well.

Utterly awesome game. My sister has it on her PS2. I love it.

Oh, and theres the Star Wars Episode 3 game coming out.

Also, Spider-Man 2 rocks, though the PS2 version has the worst graphics.

GTA series: Already mentioned several times, but they're fantastic. Especially Vice City.
Manhunt: Some people didn't like it, and others wanted it banned. But I thought it was excellent.
Spiderman 2: Again, it's already been mentioned, but you're missing out if you've never played it. Probably more worth a rental than a purchase, however, because there's not much replayability.
ESPN NFL 2K5: If you're into football, I think Sega put out the better football game last year.
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005: I scoffed at the idea of an entertaining video golf game, too, until I played it.
Fight Night Round 2: The best boxing game available. Period.
Burnout 3: The best arcade racing game available. Period.
Toca Race Driver 2: I simply can't recommend the Gran Turismo games, for a number of reasons. Race Driver 2, on the other hand, has realistic damage modeling to go along with a realistic driving model (even more realistic than the one in the GT games, IMO).
Def Jam Fight for NY: Also already mentioned, but it's an awesome fighting game. The first game in the series was a wrestling game, but FFNY is most definitely a street fighter.

If you're a fan of first person shooters, you're really out of luck with the PS2, as the only "high profile" shooter they have is Killzone, which is a pathetic excuse for a shooter. I've heard good things about Road to Hill 30, but haven't played it myself.

As far as third person shooters go, there's MGS3, and Red Dead Revolver. The Splinter Cell games are fantastic. Also, Full Spectrum Warrior comes out in a few days. I played the Xbox version, and it's extremely rad.

The first and third Ratchet and Clank games are also excellent, as is Jak 3.

Battlefront is a third person shooter. Nitpick aside, however, Battlefront is good if you're looking a multiplayer fragfest, but the single player game is certainly nothing to write home about.

There's a view change button? I did not know that. Learn something new every day, I suppose.

Anyway, the real reason I didn't recommend it, regardless of the FPS/TPS issue, is that I didn't think it was all that great. I found it to just be Battlefield 1942 with Star Wars. I understand a whole lot of folks love Battlefield, but I don't.

RPG: Shadow Hearts and Shadow Hearts: Covenant. Two very good RPGs that are superior to the FF series on PS2. Not quite horror, more dark humour RPGs with some horror elements. SH is creepier than SH:C, with a demon village and a haunted house that I WON'T play at night. Graphics are dated on the first one, but beautiful on the second. Cinematics are well scripted, and they're willing to keep the cursing of the Japanese script mostly intact.

Xenosaga Episode I and Xenosaga Episode II. I don't like these quite as much as the Shadow Hearts series, but they're still quite good. Futuristic sci-fi RPG with interesting characters. The end cinematic of the second one definitely left me with a major WTF. Some interesting religious connections also, although I'm not sure how many the average person would pick up (and I'm pretty sure I've missed a few also).

Wild Arms Advanced Third. If you can find it, this is an interesting Wild West RPG with a twist in that there used to be advanced technology. It's interesting in that it tracks ammunition, and you have to defend to reload. Each character is a caster, but has to have particular "Guardians" assigned to them, which determines their casting ability.

NOT RECOMMENDED: Star Ocean: Till The End of Time. An awkward combat system combined with a mediocre to crappy plotline and cardboard characters makes this a snoozer of an RPG. It's also a memory whore.

Sports: I like the ESPN games myself for football and basketball. Hockey I prefer the old EA games, but I'll admit I've played nothing newer than 2002 in that line. For less serious sports, SSX Tricky is the best of the snowboarding games (I consider it better than SSX 3). NBA Street is fun in any volume; each one has gotten better than the last, but the original is still fun because of the secret characters. I didn't care for NFL Street, but my roommate loved it.

Driving: The Gran Turismo series is still the stick to which all other racing games must measure up. Forza might change that (X-BOX), but the GT series has longevity and fun factor behind it.

I'd recommend Final Fantasy X (can't believe no one mentioned it!), Kingdom Hearts, Resident Evil: Code Veronica X, Manhunt, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, Timesplitters 1+2, Smackdown!: Here Comes The Pain and Crazy Taxi for sheer mindless fun.

Only play MGS3:SE if you don't mind your slow, tense sneaking gameplay in a 1964 setting occasionally being utterly ruined by 8-bit bosses who are fucking X-men. Hideo is a moron.

Dynasty warriors! 3 has the best music, four the best graphics (although they suffer from PS2 highres flicker). Run about and kill people! What could be more fun?

GT4 is okay, if easy. GTA:SA is a no-brainer.

If you like Football then you can't go wrong with either the latest FIFA or Pro Evolution game, though IIRC Pro Evolution is called Winning 11 in the USA.
