The Vilification of Sex

Post by patkelly »

I was abused while attending Catholic school in the early 1960’s though I have learned to see my abuse in a totally different light than many others. In spite of the fact the abuse I suffered was not as spectacular as some it was nonetheless just as devastating and most certainly far more widespread.

I was told it was sinful to think about sex and if I had impure thoughts and died without confession I would spend the rest of eternity in hell. The free and rational mind I was born with was maliciously and deliberately turned against me by those charged with furthering the teachings of the Catholic Church. I was no saint as I entered adolescence and try as I might, I simply could not resist the temptation to touch myself. The same way I had the first time I lost myself within new and wonderful feelings that accompanied my first orgasm. Now I was a sinner. I was weak and easy prey for the devil that always had his way with me.

I quickly learned to hide what I did with myself and each time it was over I was overwhelmed by intense feelings of shame, guilt, disgust and remorse. Time and time again I promised myself and god I would never do it again. What a bad person I was. Not good like the nuns and priests who had devoted their lives to god. Not good like the other kids who surely never had the same terrible and sinful thoughts of the sexual things I wanted to do to others and have them do to me. I was surely perverted, abnormal and the lowest of the low. I hung my head and cast my eyes downward as I traversed from one class to another. I couldn’t look my friends in the eye because I was afraid they might somehow discover the dark secrets I was hiding. I would have just died if they ever found out about the horrible person I had become.

Now some forty years later I am finally overcoming a lifetime of irrational religious inspired sexual guilt. There was nothing wrong with me and nothing could have been more normal and natural than my hidden sexual desires. It was not wrong for me to touch myself and experience what billions of years of evolution had commanded me to experience. There was nothing wrong with my desire to reach out to others so we could experience sexual joy together. There was nothing wrong with any of my sexual feelings, thought or behaviors. The fault was not with me. The fault lay within the darkest recesses of the human imagination that originally gave rise to centuries of cultural and religious ignorance.

Many today have learned to condemn sex because a sibling, a priest, an uncle or someone else engaged in sex with them as a child. Though these encounters may have been agreed to and even enjoyed when they actually took place, years later certain participants have changed their opinions and views regarding what happened. For me, I would have welcomed the opportunity to explore sex with a priest or anyone able to break through the layers of resistance so skillfully instilled upon me by the church. The experience could have reopened my mind to the long forgotten reality that sex was a good thing to be openly pursued and enjoyed.

There is a big difference between mutually enjoyed sex and violence perpetrated against an unwilling sexual partner. Sex is far removed from violence and the two have very little in common. In spite of the current wave of anti-sex hysteria the fact still remains that the far greater majority of sexual encounters, irregardless of age or age differences, is experienced as pleasurable. It is only religious inspired social guilt, remorse, fear and regret that can turn the wondrous beauty of sex into something ugly and perverse.

Before we blame what is unquestionably one of the most beautiful parts of the human experience for all our problems we all need to step back and take a closer look at our repressive attitudes towards sex. Surely a world that openly encouraged the enjoyment of sex would be a world whose inhabitants had less time or desire to engage in violence. Surely such a world would be infinitely superior socially than the one we live in today.

Welcome, stoat (everyone here is a stoat :D ).

No poke. Just welcome. And I hope you will join in our discussions here, most of us are quite willing to listen to any well-reasoned point.

Well, it almost fits the avatar. Just need to invert the sentence structure slightly, and you've got Yoda.

Are you implying that you think this to be an incredible claim? Catholic school abuse was widespread, and many of the guilty institutions have admitted as much.

Actually, she would be number 6 billion and something. You don't give a fuck about anyone besides yourself or people to whom you feel you directly owe something.

I find it fascinating that people would react defensively to someone who says she was abused at a Catholic School. Does institutional loyalty extend to pedophiles?

Damn right. And I don't feel sympathy for someone on a guilt trip about
how this or that or this fucked their life up irrevocably...

This reminds me of my old Health Class in HS, where I bitched out some
stupid junkie addict.

You're still not answering my question. Why are you reacting defensively to patkelly's account of abuse at a Catholic school? And please, don't tell us you were just trying to politely inform us that catholic sexual abuse did not literally hit the world's entire population; it was a sarcastic remark, and you were reacting defensively.
