Star Wars: Warlords (HomeWorld 2 Mod)
Wasn't sure where to put this, but I feel here will do ^^
I rarely come out with gushing praise for anything, but this is special. This is possibly the best Mod I've ever seen. And that's not just because I'm a die-hard Original Trilogy fan.
Homeworld 2 was frankly disappointing for me, for various reasons, but this mod has surpassed it. It's better than most official Lucas Arts SW games, perhaps due to the inherent amazingness of the HW2 engine. The guy who made/ is making it has the humble goal of "I want decently accurate weapon counts, not some potshot contest that doesn't do (*cough*much), basically you aren't used to seeing ships actually get angry". Each ship has each gun on it. It's utterly astouding, and we're only at beta 0.45. The large ships are so massive, my 3.2GHz PC gets notable slowdown. Each ship is as accurate can can be modelled, and is sized accordingly. The Executor is actually the full 17.2km in game. Fighters are barely gnats compared to it.
I can't eulogise any further as the tranqullisers are taking effect, so here's some of my screenies:
There is some EU stuff in here too. =D
Even the small ships are near-perfectly modelled
Pretty much every SW fighter is in-game...
Just look at that
Full size. In game. Each gun, all 1000 odd is there. Even all the windows. o.o;
Well over 60 ships here.
Bit of slowdown, but my god is it pretty.
Oh, and you get to play with a superlaser

^The main site isn't special. Evidently all the guys' free time is spent on the mod.

Yeah, it's a BEAUTIFUL mod. Runs a lot smoother than it used to, now, with the simplified shield meshes. Not to say that it runs SMOOTHLY at all times, hell no, but when you have scores of ships on-screen, each firing scores (if not hundreds) of weapons, you very quickly get hundreds-thosands of blasts in the air at any given time...each with full collision detection. It's not graphics, it's CPU that nukes it.

AI's no slouch in it, either. I've had to take on an Executor with heavy escort before...as Rebels. That HURT.

Really? I've never seen the expert AI do anything. If my computer could handle it, I suspect 3vs1 would be a fair fight.White Haven wrote:AI's no slouch in it, either. I've had to take on an Executor with heavy escort before...as Rebels. That HURT.
jesus, the executor? That costs like 600,000 to build, not to mention at least 150k in research, it'd take hours to mine that amount with 20 miners...

I got a trainer for it, for instant build. Also works for the CPU, so the 70-odd ship battle was only about an hour in.
But, I usually only play with RotJ ships and as the Empire so no worrying about Rebel supercaps for me. Also allowed me to re-create the battle of Endor with the Imperial fleet actually trying.
By the time the first Mon Cal exploded, the third was a flaming hulk. =D
My friend plays as the Scum, as 'they have more sheilds'. I prefer the Empire. (and not just because I like the Empire) because the ISD II outguns the MC80s about 2-1. In a 20MC vs 8ISD II battle, I won.

ISD II's are built like tinfoil. MC90's are equipped FAR better. Republic and Nebula destroyers have very powerful weapons loads, and very well shielded.Vanas wrote:I got a trainer for it, for instant build. Also works for the CPU, so the 70-odd ship battle was only about an hour in.

Also, I found out you can insta build by choosing "reinforcements" and disable research. But that's just not fun

ISDs might not be the most durable, but A) DAMN if they don't tear anything a new asshole, and B) judicious targetting of hostile interdictors and use of hyperdrives can enable a crippled ship to escape to safety. I've had running battles for over half an hour, ships retreating, repairing, recharging shields, and charging back into the fray. Damn if Correllian Heavy Gunships aren't a royal pain in the ass, even if you have destroyers.
Oh, and Lancers are fucking BEAUTIFUL. Even if they look like dildos.

Warlords is a awsome mod. The recent version is amazingly better then any other version simply because you actually dont have a computer that lags out because of the on screen action!

The scary thing? The game just WENT ON that long. NO injections.

Slightly off topic, but do any of you people happen to know if the New Rebbelion mod works for Home World Cataclysem? (sp?) due to the fact im a poor poor cretinous peon who's computer cannot run HW2

I'm pretty sure that there's a version that was specifically built for HW:C, but even if there is, don't expect it to be nearly as good. HW:C, like the Original HW before it, are not very mod friendly. That was one thing that fixed in HW2.Dartzap wrote:Slightly off topic, but do any of you people happen to know if the New Rebbelion mod works for Home World Cataclysem? I think the New Rebellion mod worked on the original HW. I recall there was a bug that if you ordered the Victory to volley-fire, it rammed the enemy ship and exploded -.-
Lancers are ace. in groups of 8, with some ISD nearby, they mince anything smaller than themselves. But, they will plough straight into the fray with MonCals, regardless of their own safety >_o
The ISD I is significantly tougher than the II, but the II has the 64 Heavies, compared to 0 on the I. Lack of sheilding is bunk when a MonCal doesn't survive long enough to breach the shields.
Oh, the CPU seems to hate Bayonets for some reason. This simple observation has kept my Carracks and Enforcers in combat much longer than usual

I simply LOVE the Galofre(reb medium transports) transports, they are sickeningly amazing. They self repair faster than should be legal, their shields completely regen almost instantly (like some of the corellian corvettes), repair destroyers fast, and anything smaller nearly instantly, and can capture destoryers very fast, and survive long enough to get close to them to boot.White Haven wrote:ISDs might not be the most durable, but A) DAMN if they don't tear anything a new asshole, and B) judicious targetting of hostile interdictors and use of hyperdrives can enable a crippled ship to escape to safety. Corellian corvettes, heavy corvettes and heavy gunships are good, they are difficult to hit by things bigger than them, and have godly shield recharge rates. They are, however, galfore fodder ... What I took all of your corvettes?
Also, the cc-9600 and Neb B-2 are delicious, torpedo lobbing machines. I acutally perfer torpedoes to lasers, they tend to do more damage and against big targets, hit more frequently. They are made of tissue paper, it's true, but if you want to focus on them, you'll find that when it's time to focus on the enemy destroyers, you'll be at a disadvantage.
Fighters, I find, are mostly a waste of resources by the time you get to destroyers, even the famed K-wings with their giant yellow balls of death, en masse are only going to do marginal damage to destroyers (save the Hapan Battle Dragon, which is well armed, but is otherwise made of tinfoil)
INJECTIONS ARE FOR THE WEAK!Losonti Tokash wrote:Use resource injections, then.
Just as a note, there is a drawback to using hyperdrives in combat, your ships take extra damage, so you'll have to pull out well before your ship would have been destroyed. The down side to pulling out, also, is that you are going to end up losing all your resource nodes.
Oh, and there are 2 defensive platforms well worth their price. The heavy launchers, which are harder to down that you might expect, and can unload a lot of hurt. The other, the heavy ion cannon platform, which is basically 2 kdy-150's strapped to some solar collectors. 1 or 2 hits from these bad boys will instantly disable smaller destroyers. Have a few of these (very cheap) at your biggest resource point, it's great
Also, playing as milita, the refit super freigtor has 4 kdy-150, a butt load of short range torpedoes (as does the Bulkwar), a nice number of modern TLs, though isn't very tough. The large star dreadnaught is just lots of hitpoints, and not worth the price, unsure about the invicible dreadnaught as I generally play games where you only get 1 cruiser... and if I'm getting a cruiser, it sure as hell won't be the cheapo one (50k... that's slightly more than a nebula destroyer!)
Also, your little Lancers can destroy turrets like it's nobodies business

The first time I saw a hostile SSD swimming into sensor range....I freaked. Hell, the swarm of ISDs and Allegiances escorting it looked like corvettes.
...never mind the maxxed-fleet game I played where I ran across four World Devastators and two Torpedo Spheres.

I have this wonderful, wonderful game on my Mac-G5 at home. I am somewhat ashamed to admit it, but part of the reason I got a new G5 was because it was the only MAC that could run ((smoothly)) this massive monster.
Now, I really can’t nitpick such a piece of art ((well, ok I can, but it’s not fair)) I know that due to the Original Homeworld2’s game physics, it’s really impossible to fully recreate the cannon StarWars ships. And obviously the fighters and their ‘Salvo’ option are horribly overpowered ((A ‘salvo’ from 12squardons of Skiprays is enough to destroy an Alligance-SD))
But all that aside, I see this Mod as something purely for fun. It does better then anything else, to actually create the massive Capital ship battles we have longed for in StarWars for so very very long. I know some of the Alliance chips are a bit overpowered, but then again all their Cruisers suck…
Speaking of that, I am sure everyone for the longest time has only seen the ‘Sovereign’ SD in that shadowy side pic? Well, was everyone else as satisfied as I was with how it was portrayed?
