Is there any indication whether this is before or after whatever happens that makes Palpatine go from his old-senator look to wrinkly-emperor look?

I'm guessing from the interest this fact holds that it's wrinkly Palpatine, but just making sure.

The visual dictionary hints at it being the use of force lighting to defeat the jedi, that disfigures the emperor.

Yeah, it's when Windu is thrown out the window, so he's got the distorted look.

I guess I just like knowing that even by the time of RotJ 25 years later, Palpatine still has hair.

Additionally, I refuse to believe that it's the deflected Force lightning that's soley responcible for that look.

I was thinking that he drew on some of the "unnatural" dark force powers hinted at in the trailer to help his battle against the four Jedi... and that drawing such power drained his body, or something.

From what we know from other sources and materials so far, Palpatine's appearence is due to years of corruption from the Dark Side of the Force, as well as his sheer level of skill in the Force. Palpatine's clones come out normal but eventually develop the same appearence, although much more rapidly due to them being clones (clones don't tolerate the Force or particularly concentrations of the Dark Side at that kind of scale as well as normal people do).

In my opinion, Palpatine's "normal" disquise is due to something similar to the already-known Doppleganger technique, which creates a manifestation of the Force user that is virtually indistinguishible in every way from an actual person (even to electronic devices such as scanners and sensors) and can interact with objects and be touched, but will vanish when the Force user stops or if it's injured. In a similar way, Palpatine's disquise vanishes when his Force lightning is deflected back torwards him, and he remains in his normal appearence, for one to use as additional "ammunition" to the Senate against the Jedi.

Had I run the OS, we would have weekly updates on the database, in coordination with the official Holocron-archive at Lucas Licensing. 8)

I've been reading scans from the novelisation, and it does seem, at least according to the book, like Palpatine's appearence is in fact due to Force lightning being deflected back onto him.

I concede my previous stance, but God damn it, I liked the idea of a Doppleganger-ish disquise so much more... :(

I like how the novel put it, and that Mace's vaunted style of Vaapad skirts so close to the Dark Side that it actually allows him to redirect the lightning right back at him...

That's gonna be fucking amazing to see in the theatres...

To be honest, I wish Stover would have just shut the fuck up about Vaapad and stick to the God damn story.

As someone on MF.com said, Stover practically makes Vaapad a supporting character.

Agreed, but it brings up some interesting points; mainly that the dark side of the Force isn't a bogeyman to some Jedi, and that it can be used to some extent if one has enormous self-discipline and strength of will.

It all shows that Anakin really fucked up and picked the wrong side in the whole deal...

Stover is a martial artist and martial arts and the way magic (or in this case the force) functions have had important places in his previous novels. I'm happy that a man who writes great fight scenes and can do a kick ass dark novel got the job of writing this one.

Yeah, but can't he just shut the hell up about the technique and just stick with the fight itself? I don't care how Mace's Voodoo shit works or what it means to him, I care about the fight.

Not having read it (I'm keeping my spoilers to a certain minimum) I won't argue passages with you. Having read a lot of his previous works, I'm looking forward to his fight scenes.

Vaapad is just the name of Form VII lightsabre combat. It's not "voodoo". :P

Nitpick: The VD states that Vaapad is NOT conventional Form VII, but rather a newer form, branched from VII.

It looks like it got rear-ended. Way to go, ILM...

... though there could be the off chance that it's actually a fan-made model based on the @#*(&@ing WEG blueprints.

Apparently not, since it's direct from the RotS VD.
