Asimov and the Foundation are decently but exactly top notch, or maybe its just the fact I'm used to Storys with wide reacing plots and defined charaters rather than bundles O short stroys as was Asimov's trademark

Iain M. Banks is good at science fiction. He also has a secret identity of Iain (no M) Banks, writer of books that aren't science fiction. Have any of you read The Wasp Factory? It's quite the read. I must also say that Feersum Endjinn is one of the great underrated works of the cyberpunk genre.

Neal Stephenson has a lively style but he doesn't do endings well.

Vernor Vinge is great. A Fire Upon the Deep rivals the Culture series in scope.

I won't say he's the best ever, but William Gibson's Neuromancer is one of my favorite books.

For reliable, good books, I would have to say (for science fiction):
Asimov
Bradbury
Heinlein
McCaffrey (she's had a couple stinkers, but few and far between)
Moon

For me (and I apologise in advanced if I mispell or reiterate);

Timothy Zahn
JRR Tolkien
Raymond E Feist
Homer

And honourable mention to JK Rowling, not in their league per-se, but I do enjoy reading her work.

Eh. Robert Jordan is decent, but I think WoT is, at best, an average story...Martin, though, is excellant. I can't believe I forgot him.

Ha!

Her work has been going down hill for a long time. Some of her stuff is pretty good and her earliest stuff really is pretty damn good (filled with quite a few brain bugs and ideas that would never fly in a rational world) but it's fallen off badly. I think some of it has to do with the fact that she should have wrapped up some of the series years before.

In no particular order,

Heinlein
Pierce Anthony
Terry Brooks
Tom Clancy
Clive Cussler (ocasionally)
Timithy Zahn

Who's Toliken?

Because Tolkien wrote fantasy not science fiction.

Ands have you read any of Zahn's non-Star Wars works. Good reads but not anywhere as good as his Star Wars novels.

A lot are out of print because they aren't very big sellers. If you can find though the Conquerers Trilogy isn't bad. And the too Black Collar Cobra books are pretty good as well.

William Golding.

After that, maybe Jonathan Swift. Other contenders include: Joseph Conrad, Kate Chopin, and Nathaniel Hawthorne.
