Bought a PSP

Post by jegs2 »

...on whim, and ostensively for my wife (wink, wink). The picture on the screen is quite good. Warning -- it doesn't come with any playable games, though it does come with a full version of Spider-Man 2. You'll need to get a DC adaptor, and if you want to use your old Sony memory sticks, well you need an adaptor for that too. I wasn't intending to buy the thing, but then I've always been a sucker for the newest toy.

How many were there at the store you got it from?

They seem to be fairly common up here, but I've considered breaking into the PSP market on eBay for some extra cash, since other people haven't had much luck. :D

I think he means an AC adapter. I'm personally rather happy with my DS. I mean the PSP sounds nice but I value gameplay over graphics, enjoy not having my screen get scratched up, and would never be able to afford to buy all my movies over again/ get massive memory sticks to hold music on so all the PSPs advantages are nullified for me and thus the DS with it's cheaper price and the fact that it was around locally in time for me to ask for it as an X-Mas present won out :). Though If you have the loot to burn I suppose it's added functionality could be nice.

Not to mention that I'm a poor little person.

$250 for the system + $50 for each game just for better graphics isn't worth it when I can pay $150 for the system and $30 for each games and get better gameplay and longer battery.

i love my ds. but the whole thing that got me confused is that my psp came with an ac adapter.

Well maybe he actually meant DC adapter and he's talking about a car adapter ('cause the cigarette lighter gives DC power). Yeah, that might be what he's talking about.

It's an AC adapter to charge it up, like the Advance SP.

$250? Overpriced, IMO.

My friend bought one. You have to order them here. No stores that I know of have any sitting around. I'm impressed with the quality of the screen. If there are quite a few good games made for it, I might pick one up myself.

I'll get one at the end of the summer when i have disposable income again. On the DS, I adore it, but heard a disturbing rumor in a local GameStop yesterday. Is it true that Nintendo is already considering dropping the system? That would be terrible, I realy think it's a worthwhile system. Apparently the developers just aren't biting. Anyone know what's up with that?

Nintendo does things like that. In this case I'm dubious, however: they've sold pretty well and have a shitload of potential. First console ever with decent FPS controls. Soon as they release a fucking web app they'll sell hundreds of thousands of more units.

I'm interested to hear what people have to say bout the PSP screen: I've never seen one working. What's the resolution like? If it's 'regular' res, won't PS2 games look icky?

Hm, I see. So some other places are PSP-poor.

I was only asking because there are plenty up here in Mass, and I'm thinking I could make a killing by selling them on eBay.

Nah. All they had to do was add another button to the DS to bring up
a map, instead of devoting an entire LCD to it anyway, FPS games have
been doing fine without another 17" monitor devoted entirely to just
maps...

Meh, I enjoy the touchscreen and some of the dual screen functionalities. Besides, maps are fun, and I hope someone makes a RTS game before the DS folds, having two screens just screams micromanagement and other asorted fun.

Have you ever played a FPS on the DS smacktard? The thumbshoe + touchscreen combo is the next best thing to a mouse and keyboard when it comes to controlling a FPS.

Yes, I've played Metroid whatever on a DS Machine in Best Buy,
was not very impressive, screw shifting between two screens, I want
one BIG screen.

*GASP* A thread about the PSP started a conversation about the DS? Who would have thought...

To anyone who has a PSP: Does the triangle stick? Do discs fall out? Any dreaded dead pixels that plagued the DS and the PSP in Japan? What about battery life?

I don't know if Nintendo is going to dump the DS so soon, but things aren't looking up for the holdover system.

The DS is currently getting rocked by the PSP in Japan in terms of weekly sales. Almost twice as many units weekly. It's absolutely destroying GBA sales too. PSP has yet to catch up in absolute sales but it WILL happen eventually.

A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

*sigh*

You know how you don't know what you're talking about sometimes? It's like that, only happening RIGHT NOW. Twin thumbs have nothing on touchscreen control.

[EDIT] If anyone wants to answer my question, that'd be nice. I know the resolution. I want to know what it LOOKS like, whether the games squish up, or waste one side with a map, etc. Y'know, useful things. There's got to be a reason all the pictures have a PS2 screenshot photoshopped over it :)

Looks like I'll be getting my wish, or close anyway. GameSpot is reporting that Age of Empires II is being ported to the DS.

Nope, Age of Empires DS carries the AOE name but is a turn-based game.
