Fear
Ever since the Al-Quaeda tape was released that specifically named Canada as one of the target nations, I've been reluctant to go downtown because Toronto is Canada's equivalent to New York: the capital city in all but name.
Does this make me a wimp?

I don't think so. The Al-Qaeda have instilled fear in the heart of many. I personally would be afraid to go to some Californian cities, New York, Boston, Chicago, DC...so many other places. It's not that you are afrais of them, personally, maybe, but that maybe you are afraid of impending terrorist attacks? Anything is possible nowadays, so no, I don't think you are nay more a "wimp" than the rest of us.

Not really, though I'd say your being overly paranoid. The odds of being killed or injured in a terrorist attack in North America are still very very low.

No, just human. People have a natural instinct to avoid danger. Natural selection has dictated so.
For myself, when I think about terrorism at home I tend to be a bit confused. They have threatened (and will without doubt carry out those threats) E.U cities with attacks.
I live in the capital of a secondary E.U country. However, due to that precise fact, our security is more laxed than in London or Paris, so a terrorist attempt would be easier here than in some other places..

The odds are greater that you will die from assasination by fundie morons and/or darkstar than that you will die in a terrorist attack. That you can calmly walk outside at all when you have angered so many is proof that you are not a wimp.

Of course the odds are infinitesimally small, but the probability of getting shot by the sniper in Washington was inferior to that of getting hit by lightning, and still the whole city seemed frozen Everybody is used to the idea of dying in a car accident. They just won't give it a second thought.

Re: Fear
No. You are not a wimp. Remember that terrorists are trying to get you to be afraid of doing things like this, and they tailor their methods specifically to make people reluctant to do so. Frankly, they're pretty good at what they do. I was afraid of going to the Shark Tank (Compaq Center ) for a while, because it was so close to the airport. You have to remember, though, that the best way to fight against terrorism is to live your life the way you ordinarily would.Darth Wong wrote:Ever since the Al-Quaeda tape was released that specifically named Canada as one of the target nations, I've been reluctant to go downtown because Toronto is Canada's equivalent to New York: the capital city in all but name.

Well I don't know about being a wimp--maybe--sounds more like being overly cautious. Paranoid would be a better word .
Seriously, if I was in your position and I didn't have a real need to delve into where would be the most probable target of the city I wouldn't go. I wouldn't change my noral routine neither.

I live in NYC, I have seen the 9/11 attacks from my school (it's in downtown Brooklyn). And I'm not afraid to go.
I think that changing your routine to accommodate the terrorist warning is silly and foolish. It is like not driving because of the possibility of a car accident. There is noting you can do to top a terrorist act, but changing your life dratically just because of the possibility of an attack is too much in my opinion.
Have a very nice day.

I'm not afraid to go places, because I live in the middle of nowhere, and 9/11 was a rare event. You don't see a domsetic ist attack of that magnitude every day. Since 9/11, I've been to Washington D.C., and I've flown to Albequerque for the Balloon Fiesta, with no problems. But, you never know...

Statistically speaking, over the past 30 years, only a few thousand Americans (out of billions who have lived and died) have died from terrorist attacks. The odds of you dying from a terrorist attack are practically zero.
Then again, who could really blame you? You have a wife and kids you support, and I'm sure that you'd want to see your two boys grow up to see what girl they bring home for prom. Taking chances isn't in the job description of a father and husband.

I guess it's not irrational fear at all really. I mean I was in Bali at the start of the year, along with 5 other friends, and we spent every single night at the Sarri Club and Paddy's Bar while we were ther. When the bomb blast took place, it was chilling. All my Bali friends were like, guess we aren't going back there this summer!
But to a certain extent I disagree. I didn't want to go back to Kuta anyway, but there are so much more places in Bali that I did want to go back and see. I intend on doing so, once all this has sort of gone away, 'cause my parents are really worried.
On another note, there is this urban legend going around Melbourne at the moment that I wish to address;
Muslim man dropes wallet. WASP girl picks it up and catches up with him to hand it back. He is appreciative, and tells her to stay away from Chadstone (major shopping centre in SE suburbs famous for 24 retail during Christmas period) and Crown (the casino) during Christmas.
Now a lot of the younger girls at work are all worked up about it, and the rest of us either feed their hysteria, or talk sense into them depending on our mood. My point is, that I refuse to live in terror. If I really need or want to go somewhere I will.

Slightly paranoid maybe, but not a wimp. I am of the opinion that one should never give the pricks the satisfaction of feeling like thay have done something to further their goals.
