Hopefully Michael Schiavo will finally have some peace, too.

Feeding Tubes, Legality, and Ethics

Post by Coyote »

Alright, so in the ultimate act of irony, the day that Terri Schiavo died after her feeding tube had been extracted (following a bitter, protracted legal battle), the Roman Catholic Church put a feeding tube into Pope John Paul II, whom even the most staunch of Catholics can see is on his last legs.

The legal battles of Terri Schiavo centered around the right to die, quality of life issues, and many other issues about what constitutes "life" as it begins to slow to its inevitable conclusion. Those who sought to keep her alive frequently found themselves centering on religious reasons.

So now, many of those same people who fought to keep people alive no matter what the cost, no matter the obvious lack of function or ability, and extending an unnatural semi-existance will get to watch as the Pope begins his long, slow decline and is kept alive artificially.

The Catholic Church will essentially be rudderless, with no actual Pope sitting, making decrees, giving judgements, holding Mass, doling out blessings. A council of Bishops will act as regents, but since they are not the Pope, the "Vicar of Christ on Earth", their descisions will not be Papally/religiouslly binding, or 'canon'.

What will the religious, especially vehemently Catholic pro-life-at-any-cost types rationalize as their Church goes for, say, the next 10 years with no one truly at the helm? Will it force them to see certain 'stipulations' as necessary? Could the Pope be defrocked while in a coma and his office given to another Bishop? Will the Catholic Church just accept a sort of limbo for the next few years, setting the precedent for more elderly, frail Popes in the future to reign well into quasi-death?
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

Does the Pope have a living will? Has he made his wishes known to the Bishops?

I think he did... he did say he wanted to simply leave it in God's hands. Technically, that could be a wish for no more extreme measures to save his life.

I am of the opinion (though since I am not a high-ranking Catholic church official, I have no proof), that the bishops and cardinals around JPII have been doing everything they can to keep him the Pope. With the exception of evolution, John Paul's ultraconservative, a stance the higher-ups like (and, when he got old and sickly, made him easier to control). If John Paul were to die, there's no guarantee that the conservatives will be able to hold on to power in the church, which brings about the likelihood that he will be succeeded by a liberal pope (one who supports such "blasphemous" ideas like women priests and allowing priests to get married), so they're trying to keep him alive as long as possible to prevent that from happening.

Of course, I'm just a disillusioned former Catholic with a slight paranoid streak, but I've watched the church die by inches for a long time now and see no one responsible but the people running the show. Hell, even my ultraconservative grandfather thinks Catholicism would be a lot healthier with a lot of the liberal reforms.

Anyway, back on topic, it's nice to know the whole Shiavo thing is finally over with. People don't just get up from 15 years of a vegetative state, so it was well past her time. If I ever ended up in that state, I wouldn't even want to go through the lengthy procedure of pulling the plug. Just hire someone to shoot me in the head or something.

That seems pretty obvious doesn't it?

Science would be the evidence backing the case to let her die.

Logic would be the decision to let her die based off that evidence.

Morality would be letting her die based off that evidence.

This ass has been popping up all over - got kicked (or is a hell of a sockpuppet) and he came back to spite. I'm surprised the Admiral hasn't smitten with the ban hammer - though I'd far prefer an exposure of his ISP to the whole of the world and a good deal of illegal muckery.

He's the one who called Lord Wong a "chink" in the HoS. I say we just trace his IP then call his mommy on him.
Why wonder why? The answer is simple: obviously, someone somewhere decided that he or she needed Baby Jesus up the ass.

Did anyone hear what GWB said? And he declared that he would rather "err on the side of life"? Saying that when we are 'unsure'? What the HELL is unsure about it? Her cerebellum was mush! He has the gaul to claim that he is erring on the side of life?

I guess letting her starve to death for 2 weeks was the humane thing to do (unlike a quick lethal injection and get it over with)
