Ah. I haven't watched it in quite a while (last I saw was the middle of the Majin Buu saga...after seeing Cell get obliterated for the third replay in a row).

Considering Gohan's intentions to become a scholar why pray tell would he be doing heavy training for six years when he didn't know of the existance of Buu?

Thing is later on he does become a scholar even after he's moved out. That bit of the Saiyajin heritage that loves fighting seems to have skipped him.
