AT-AT Variant?

Post by The Dark »

This is a complete off-the-wall question, but in the old NES cartridge of The Empire Strikes Back, there is a level in which you fly a snowspeeder at the Battle of Hoth. The AT-ATs are slightly different from the ones in the movie, however, in that they have a small turret at the top rear of the vehicle that fires backwards. Should this be considered a variant of the AT-AT, possibly replacing the troop complement in order to cover the unarmed rear portion of the vehicle?

*Note: I realize video games are not strictly canon, but I'm trying to follow Dr. Saxton's practice of everything counting unless explicitly contradicted by higher-level canon.

Edit: After poking around on the technical commentaries, the turret is roughly in the same place (but smaller) than the turret on the AT-AT Swimmer.

The Insider (or some Lucasfilm people, I forgot who) had to explain away the wampa as an incredibly adaptable species after the desert wampas made their debut in the SotE game. So if that was accepted as a part of the continuity, I see no reason why this AT-AT variant shouldn't be. Or perhaps it's not a variant at all and the gun is on all AT-ATs but they weren't used for some reason on Hoth.

The AT-AT swimmer is a variant on the AT-AT used at Mon Calamari. It replaced the legs with repulsorlifts (or some other propulsion), and swam around to kick ass.
Why wonder why? The answer is simple: obviously, someone somewhere decided that he or she needed Baby Jesus up the ass.

Could we get a screenshot of this? It would be interesting.

Would this be the sequal to the game where the sandcrawler was heavily armed? Where Luke's landspeeder was armed and you had to kill Jawas for no apparent reason? Where the Sarlacc rises out of the ground and launches rocks at you? Where you can use the lasers on your X-Wing like Babylon 5's interceptors?

Reading the walkthrough on GameFAQs, it looks like even the carbon-freezing chamber was covered in laser turrets.

It's at SWTC, here.

Three images, and a description.

Those aren't the same things that were deployed by the World Devastators at Mon Calamari, Lone. The things at the Battle of Mon Calamari were called Wavewalkers, and were completely different.

You can see Wave Walkers in the Rogue Squadron N64/PC game. They look like this:

Actually, here is a picture that works, saved from another site and hosted by me:

Much like the AT-AT Swimmer, they're very (actually moreso) loosely based on the AT-AT chasis.

Why did you assume it was the DE Mon Calamari battle? It was pre-ROTJ that they were used.

If I recall, the were really only mentioned in the Golden Sun thing.

Yup, on the planet Sedri, from Galaxy Guide 9. Can't find anything about the Swimmer being used on Mon Calamari.
