A-wing's new capability?

Post by His Divine Shadow »

look at this clip, check out the a-wing, it's dropping some kinda bomb or torpedoe and it flies directly right and backwards to strike the ISD:

What could this be?

Interesting. Maybe its something like the space bombs used in the computer games like X-wing Alliance.

I'd say it's some big bomb that was attached because of lack of numbers.

TIE/I

Post by Robert Treder »

It did indeed look interesting...I checked with the VHS (Special Edition, widescreen), and if you look carefully, you can see that there are three TIE Interceptors coming over the bow of the Executor and towards the camera. They enter the shot at a great distance, immediately prior to the appearance of the A-wing in question. The A-wing goes straight for their formation, and just as they meet, the A-wing passes the TIE Interceptor that is on the righthand side relative to the camera very closely. The A-wing either clips the TIE with its starboard extremity or squeezes off a very quick shot, but it is this TIE Interceptor that veers to port and rams the hull of the Executor. The two remaining Interceptors from the formation fly directly towards the camera, as can be seen in the video clip linked to above.

My conclusion: the mystery missile is a TIE Interceptor.

Is it just me, or does that thing it shoots look kind of like the probe droid capsules from TESB.

perhaps those capsules can be used for other purposes then shielding probots? Like carrying an explosive or something. I don't see much point in that, since there are proton torps, and concussion missiles for that, and its yield didn't look particularly impressive when compared to the torps from AOTC. What other purpose could it possibly have?

Well that's all for my stating the obvious today :?

I am unable to view. What codec are you using?

DIVX

Post by Robert Treder »

It's the latest DIVX codec, whatever the hell number that is.

You don't even need to check the clip if you've got a VCR and a copy of ROTJ handy.

It's the part during the Battle of Endor (duh) where on the left, heading towards the camera, is a Nebulon-B-class frigate and on the right is the Executor's brim trench. They are exchanging broadsides.

At that point, the DS shield isn't yet down. Wedge says, "Good shot, Red Two!" immediately prior to the scene in question.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

I just checked it really carefully again and it does in fact appear to be what Robert Treder stated. A Tie intercepter shot down by the A wing. You actually see the A wing firing the shot that gets it. I can't believe I didn't notice this before. :?

Hmm, the DivX player can view it, but winblows media player can't.

I agree that it appears to be a damaged TIE.

Yup, I agree with Robert's analysis. At first I thought it was a concussion missile with a REALLY BIG engine plume fired by the A-wing, but after further analysis I do see two blaster shots fired by the A-wing (one misses) and it hits something in the TIE/I formation. The blaster shots are hard to see since the nearby X-wing almost eclipses them.

Snuff one TIE.....

Post by Sokar »

Aye, its the remains of the trailing TIE Interceptor after a snapshot by the A-wing. I love the Interceptor to death but like all TIE's its fragile as an eggshell, it would only take a glancing hit to sent it tumbling like that.

He never gave the majority of his ships shields, and the NR tore him apart when it came to fighter against fighter battles.

Well Thrawn didn't have the resources to give all his ships shields. Remember he makes it a major point to capture the Sluis Van shipyards. Additionally, I can't remember any incident in which his fighters were soundedly defeated by New Republic fighters (besides Rogue Squadron), and there is actually a point in the books where he just sort of casually warns a TIE squadron about a cluster bomb trap, preventing it's destruction. Most NR fighter action was was pretty much trying to cover capital ships withdrawing from the pastings Thrawn was handing out.

But Thrawn couldn't be everywhere to micromanage his fighters.

I concur it is a T/I.....

Hey if you look at it closely doesn't the Fighters look bigger than that corvette on the left...

I mean the corvette is in front of the Nebolon B frigate in which the T/I fly above it only about a couple hundred meters....

Is it scaled right?

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that in my first post. The Corvette is stationary and way too small. It's too small even compared to the frigate it's in front of. I think that it's a good example of what a true SFX gaffe looks like...or maybe it's some kind of heavy fighter/light freighter that just happens to have the same shape as a Corvette?

What I don't get in there is why didn't that fallen pilot's fellow mates did not turn around to engange that A-Wing or the X-Wing behind it...
Were they ordered not to attack or sometin??....if only George added a few seconds just to do that. Have a little dog fight in BoE.

It would make sense that they would use similar designs, but I doubt that that is true in this case.
