STvsSW in Highschool?!

Post by Romulan_nemesis »

Okay. True story. I'm a sophomore and this kid just transferred to our highschool. He did a report on star trek versus starwars in my literature class. After that, I talked to him, and we're now good friends.....well as good as friends as two people could get in a week. I asked him if I could share his paper with you, and he agreed. So, here it is.

This report was to be written about any kind of conflict from one point of view, and the opposing point of view. He did the subject of an inevitable conflict between the Galactic Empire, and the United Federation of Planets.
The two sides' had to be letters from their governments.

First: The Galactic Empire.

"To: Federation citizens, planets, members, starships.
From: General Tarkin, Representative of the Galactic Empire.
You people are patheitc if you show us any resistance! We have you out manned and out gunned a thousand fold or more. Why is it you still have hope after everything you've seen?; Star Destroyers, The Executor, The Death Star? You know we can sell you into slavery at will, and forge an Imperial Colony in this entire galaxy! Why do you insist on using unstable engines?! Why do your ships carry civillians?! Why do you not conquer?! You are one of the most powerful civilations in your galaxy, yet you have not conquered your enemies? You take pride in your ships, and in your creed, but not in yourselves. I find your lack of faith disturbing. Surrender to us. Your ships will be decommissioned, your officers discharged. You will find Star Destroyers in orbit of every planet within the next 24 hours, filled with storm troopers. They will ensure our safe transition from your "utopia" to a force to be reckoned with! Why do you continue to resist? We are not forbidding you from anything! We give you commerce! We give you the most powerful technology in existance! You will be as rich and powerful in one years time from us, when it would take you another millenia to attain our greatness! Your Federation will be dissolved, the Empire will remain. Your enemies will be conquered, and only those who resist shall be punished. Make it easy, and simply surrender. There is no other alternative.

24 hours later, a transmission aboard the Executor was recieved at 0200 hours, Imperial time; 0900 hours Federation standard time.

To: General Tarkin aboard Imperial Starship Executor
From: Captain James T. Kirk, USS Enterprise-A, Federation Flagship.
You ask us "why?" so many times in your statement it made my head spin. The truth is that we are human. We are Vulcan, we are Andorian! We are even Klingon! And you can conquer us, you can raid us, pillage and pluder us. Strip us of our uniforms, our ships, our weapons and our resources. But you will never take away the Federation. You can hang an Imperial flag over the Federation Captiol, but the Federation will still exist. No weapon has yet been fired in this inevitable conflict, but if you attempt any such conflict, we will be ready....or we will fail. We have no idea if we can equip our ships to withstand your weapons for at least 5 minutes. But if we can, we will. And in the end, you may win, and soon, no one will be fixing their red Starfleet uniforms, or making sure their white collars or shoulder straps are not dirty or smudged. Or that the computer screens are looking a tad tinted, and the blue bridge displays aren't as blue as they could be. We will either be Imperial citizens, moving to your "Coruscant" planet, or in chains and shackals for trying to keep every memory of Starfleet in our hearts. But if we can, we WILL fight you. When it's over, you could be victorious. Yes, yes you could be victorius. But, we will make your conquest a living hell. We will fight you with all our strength until we have no more strength to fight you with. And this could be the new Imperial Capitol in a few months, but the Federation will always live in us. And it will never die. You can conquer us, but you will NEVER conquer the Federation. Victory or Defeat, we have already one."

Thoughts?

By the way, correction in the last statement. I wasn't thinking when I typed this from the paper my friend had written, so it was my fault that "won" changed to "one" in the last sentence. Thats what staying up for 20 hours will do to you.

To put it delicately, the writing style could use ... improvement.

Tarkin was a refined, coldly calculating man. That kind of infantile ranting was beneath him; it is totally out of character. As for Kirk, he was a man of action, not pompous oratory. Again, the speech is completely out of character.

As for the basic idea, it presumes that the citizenry would find life under the Empire so objectionable that they would rather die than live under it. This is a highly questionable assertion; historically, most people adapt to conquerors unless either they or the conquerors are fanatical maniacs.

I also don't think the Klingons were part of the Federation at the time of Kirk. TNG is how much after TOS, and Worf is the first Klingon in Starfleet? The alliance occurred (IIRC) after the sacrifice of the Enterprise-C. Kirk died (technically) during the maiden voyage of the Enterprise-B.

Tarkin was not a General. Kirk would not have been the one to compose or transmit such a message, if one were sent at all; I think it likely that the Federation, presumably being in favor of peace, would probably rather capitulate in the face of such a vastly superior force. I doubt that the Enterprise-A would be the Federation flagship, especially considering how close it was to being decommissioned; the Excelsior would have been a superior choice. And, the most glaring of all, the last word should be "won" not "one".

Also, I thought Executor hadn't entered service until after the Death Star had been destroyed. Not sure though.

The Dark: You are correct. Worf was the first Starfleet Klingon, and the alliance was forged some time after the destruction of the Ent-C.

It's possible...the USS Constitution is the flagship of the US Navy. The flagship might not necessarily be the most powerful ship, but instead the one with the most prestige. At the time, Excelsior was probably still considered a jinxed ship due to the failure of its experimental warp drive, and Enterprise was among the most famous ships of that era.

Dark, you need to get your priorities straight. Writing term papers over reading Star-Crossed? Where have you been?

I read this topic's title after a near-fatal overdoes of oddly-drawn manga and the first thing I thought of was, 'So... the Star Wars and Star Trek characters, as if they were in different high schools, and they have a wierd mix of romace, competition, and out-and-out duelling? (Project Justice: SW v. ST, anyone? "Kirk and Leia were about to head down to the malt shop when Palpatine and his Dark Side Boys came out of the alleyway....")

For all I care, the letters could have said:

Empire: You suck! I'm better than you! I'm better than you!
Federation: Can't hear you, nya nya nya!

They were both sort of childish.
