6600GT down the shitter

Post by Captain tycho »

Basically, its working worse than my old FX5200 right now (10 fps on UT2004, on *LOW*). I suspect its a power problem, as a power error came up upon bootup, but I found a power cable detached and plugged it back in, presto, no more power errors, but it still runs like shit. Is my mobo's powerplug too weak for the 6600, or something like that?

No, that would bring simple crashs.

Bad April fools.

Well, I solved the lag problem somehow, but game framerates are still incredibly mediocre.

Is the power lead to the 6600 the only thing feeding it, or is another device on the same power connection with the vidcard?

If so, make 'em seperate.

BTW, how big is your power supply?

check how big your power supply is, may not be able to cope and not enough power is getting to the system.

Ok, I've postively determined that its a power issue. When I disconnect the card from the power unit, the comp itself runs perfectly. When connected, it takes 10 minutes just to boot. So yeah, pretty obvious that Im not getting enough power.

Oh, and ace, it DID work perfectly for about the first hour I had it (which was when my wankage took place :) )

I looked at what assumed to be the power unit (big box with all the power cords running out of it) and couldnt see any indication of its wattage. Is there a way to check via the OS? (Im running XP, btw.)

No, because there's no information running between the power supply and the computer itself. Pretty much the only thing the power supply does is... supply electricity to the computer, heh.

You're sure there's no label or sticker anywhere that lists the wattage? Not even the max amperage for different voltages? This sounds like an extremely cheap power supply, and you might want to consider purchasing better power supplies in the future.

This Power Supply Guide is one that I always pass to people looking to purchase one.

Hey tych, it's not the first time ace plainly states "that cannot be the cause!" when dealing with hardware problems. Just find out for yourself, and yes, the biggest issues with latest video cards is usually power. Either that or incompatibility, but that usually results in a plain refustal to boot up.

If you have a friend with a better case/psu, try opening both computers and trading power units, and testing the comps for a while. That's what I did, and found out that the problem was simply to buy a case with more wattage, cannibalize the power supply and throw the new (ugly cheap) case away. (the case costed nearly the same as a power supply and they were out of stock anyway).

I would suggest a power supply with a minimum of 400 watts...Especially for the newer generation of cards.

New egg has several candidates. And make sure you spend some money on that thing; a usefull power supply guide can be found at the hardforums.

Noted. Forgot about that one.

The power supply companies on that link are the ones that are well regarded.

Alright, I finally got a new 400watt power supply installed, ran a clean reinstall of winblows, and its now working...perfectly. My framerates are simply amazing compared to what they were with my FX5200, and everything simply looks spectacular. In a word, w00tz.
