For now, they're moving to 2, but they plan to increase more later. Now Hotmail's 250 seems kinda....

I have gmail linked to thunderbird so this space increase is useless. Nice gimmick though.

Linux folks can always use gmailFS to get an extra two gigs of non-volatile storage.

It seems that every time I go to check my mail that Gmail has added more space. I'm up to 2061 MB's now...

It's just part of their Infinity+1 storage plan. Seriously, the storage limit is mostly just a marketing gimmick; what it really means is "more space than you can handle!". They'll just keep revising the limit upwards, realizing that hardly anybody will use that much space so they don't actually need to have that much storage.

I think there is (or ought to be) some universal law of computing - you'll always need more space even if you don't think you will. Look at hard drives - who can honestly say that during the era of 120MB hard drives they ever thought it possible for them to fill up a 120GB one?

Let's look at my gmail account:

You are currently using 53 MB (3%) of your 2079 MB.

I've had my Gmail account for less than a year, and I don't even use email that much. I do store a few essential files there that I can get to from any computer anywhere. I think I'll hit 250 MB in a couple of years.

If it's there, I'll use it - and since I'm 100% sure Google isn't going anywhere, I'll happily use it to store critical files I definitely want to keep in case of a system crash (password protected zips, of course).
