New RPG from the Devs of Diablo 2

Post by Ace Pace »

Just got the new PCG in the mail, going to quote some parts of the preview.
PCG wrote: They could die today(though we hope they won't) and they'd have nothing left to prove to the gaming world. After all, Diablo and Diablo II didn't build themselves. But after leaving Blizzard and forming the their own indie startip, Bill Roper and a "Who's Who" of ex-blizzard VIPs decided there was no resting on laurels...
...The first ever unveiling of Hellgate:London, a roleplaying game set in a post apocalyptic rendition of the british capital.

Though it certainly looks like one, Hellgate:London is "Not a first person shooter, but an RPG,"... After all, the view is First person, and your character is holding a gun, and hell-spawned zombies are rushing towards us like refugees from Doom3. But this is "Not a twitch based experiance," Roper insists.
... For all intents and purposes, Hellgate:London is Diablo set in a modern 3d world and played from a first person perspective.

The twist in Hellgate:London's premise is that you aren't playing the big bad hero who single handedly saves Earth from being invaded by.... No, that battle was lost allready- five years ago in fact. The game picks up in the aftermath, with a demon ravaged London- a smoking burn out husk of its former self, thanks to a trigger happy human military that fought a doomed war against the demon hordes.

..."Hellaforming" our mortal realm into a more Hades-like enviorment. Human survivors are few and far-between, but some have managed to escape the Apocalypse and survive underground.
...authentic locations that will appear in the game, including St. Paul's Cathedral and Buckingham Palace.

'Only one of the playable classes - The Templar - at this time, but there will be a few differant types to choose from when Hellgate:London ships in 2006.

The single player game will be linear, but not quite as linear as Diablo's. Don't expect multiple endings, but you will experiance branching paths and randomized quests. In fact, randomization plays a big part in the game, as every layout will be randomly generated on the fly....

... you shouldn't expect to see many "go bring me something" type of missions.
Theres some more information on combat and the skill tree, but nothing importent and probebly will all change.

Sounds like first-person Diablo to me.

EDIT: In fact, that's what they say directly in the article. That's what I get for skimming.

I hope it will be more like Ultima Underworld, with NPC interactions, *real* character developement, and actual storyline instead of just Diablo in FPS mode.

Now, I guess it would be cool if, in Fist Person RPG, we can actually get some (intelligent) NPCs to fight alongside us (like those smart bots in Quake).

When I played Ultima Underworld II, I always wished I could take Dupre or Iolo to go adventuring with me instead of just running around and (sometimes) masturbating in Lord British's castle.

Interesting... sounds like a more linear version of Morrowind. Which could be a good thing, if they do it right.

Meh. Would be cooler if it didn't have the fixation on being first-person. Not a fan of FPRPGs, not after Morrowind.

Apprently, melee combat will be 3rd person, but unknown how the change will be handled.

If it won't took the "open-ended" approach like Dagerfall, I hope it would be something like Bethesda's Red Guard: nice actions (unlike Ultima VIII, believable NPCs, "unfolding" storyline, and immersive world.

Nobody plays Diablo for frigging character development. I hope it's a fever-dream twitchfest with corpses piled up to the ceiling and as little talking as possible.

What are you talking about? I'm never happier than when my character has "developed" a level 20 Frozen Orb
