Star Wars „Long Range“ Sensors

Post by Gorefiend »

Sorry, if this has been discussed somewhere before, if that is the case just pass me the link, please.

Are their any sources at hinting how effective Star Wars sensors systems are as detecting something that is several light years away (or in a different system)? I mean there are several instances when they discuses the range of sensors, but I can’t think of any that states how detailed the gathered information is.

Also, is there any indication if Star Wars sensors can detect something coming through hyperspace before it drops into the system itself? I mean if I am not completely of the ship moves into an alternative dimension to archive hyper speed, though there is still a mass shadow that should be detectable, right?

Watch RoTJ and ESB. Both have some clear and defined examples of detecting something in Hyperspace.

Exactly what did Ozzel fuck up again?
.
CONTROLLER: General, there's a fleet of Star Destroyers coming out of hyperspace in sector four. RIEEKAN: Reroute all power to the energy shield. We've got to hold them till all transports are away. Prepare for ground assault. Rieekan exits hurriedly.
VADER: What is it, General?
VEERS: My lord, the fleet has moves out of light-speed. Com-Scan has detected an energy field protecting an area around the sixth planet of the Hoth system. The field is strong enough to deflect any bombardment.
VADER: (angrily) The Rebels are alerted to our presence. Admiral Ozzel came out of light-speed too close to the system.
VEERS: He felt surprise was wiser...
VADER: He is as clumsy as he is stupid. General, prepare your troops for a surface attack.
VEERS: Yes, my lord.
He dropped into the system and then the Rebels picked up the fleet, not whilst they were still in hyperspace.
Leia looking at the screen at the Rebel Fleet going through Hyperspace.
During the bunker scene when she glances at the terminal? Wasn’t she just reading off the mission time, because the fleet was scheduled to arrive at a certain time? It’s not like we see the fleet on that terminal, as far as I recall.

That is why I added the whole RoTJ.

In RoTJ...look at the FUCKING GODDAMN SCREEN YOU IDIOT that LEIA IS STARING AT...it's has a blue background and a shit load of dots.

Also let's go to ANH or is Han just screwing with everyone as he says he was able to get them away...WHILE IN HYPERSPACE?

Jeez fuck, this isn't hidden calculation shit either.

I thought the shitload of dots was the Imp fleet, since there are twenty two.

Then it wouldn't make sense she replies "Han, The Fleet will be here any moment!"

And the dots are moving towards the Death Star?

Little odd given she would say that about an enemy fleet?

I though Saxton had the chain of events as: Leia says that the fleet will be here at any moment, the looks, horrified at the screen, seeing the Imp fleet.

Linky:

linky
The moments before the Battle of Endor provide one of the best demonstrations of accelerative capabilities. The tactical screen in the power generator bunker shows the fleet of star destroyers moving into position near the Death Star II in order to trap the rebel aramada which is due to arrive. This shot lasts for 94 movie frames, about 3.92s.

There's a thing where I don't agree with Dr. Saxton. I believe the screen shows the Alliance fleet, not the Imperial fleet.

Ships in hyperspace move at 24km/s?

You mean the scene where Dr. Saxton calculates the ISDs as having a deceleration of at least "a thousand G" and the scene Mike used to calculate a deceleration rate of 30 km/s^2 for ISDs? Or am I thinking of a different scene than you are?

Then if I'm wrong, I'm wrong.

I still feel that was the rebel fleet, because having Leia go "Han, the Fleet!" It's odd she's staring at the screen, and exclaiming this about the Imperial fleet.

"Han, the fleet."

[Stares at dots]

Either:

Look, there is our fleet.

OR

Look, our fleet will be attacked.

I will say in this bit, the novel is against me because the events in the novel are reversed of what is shown on Screen.

In the movie, she looks at the screen and goes "Han the fleet!" which is heading towards the DS2.

In the novel, the Rebel Fleet is exiting Hyperspace and is heading already to the DS2 at the time Leia is staring at the screen and according to it is being under attack.

My contention is that line of events is vauge when she exclaims the fleet...since it could be either or.

Wouldn't she already know this given....she knows the that the Empire has a small flotilla sitting there?

They did see the Executor and a few ISDs already there. Unless she presumes they were the only fleet elements there, she would likely know that something is going to be there for the Rebels, just unsure of numbers.

She didn't know there would be twenty two, only about six, as they saw earlier. Remember, the Imp fleet was 'spread across the Galaxy'.

You do understand, literally in a universe that acknowledges at least 25K in ships...okay I'll leave at this. The novel stops my point much better then You going "But she didn't know of 22!"

Which is now not true, since the DVD does show at least 9 to 11 more ships on the level of ISD in the shot.

As back to the original...RoTJ actually still stands, and so does ESB, and hell there's points in ANH.

I'm sure Leia meant the imp fleet. Shall I try to prove it, or should I just give up?

It would help if YOU DID.

Which is the point of DEBATING.

Like I said, the novel does enough of a job that I will concede that, she is saying about the Imperial fleet which is EXPLICIT in the novel.

You gave none of this but clung to a point of "There's 22 ships in the screen!!!" which is OUTDATED

Do you even grasp why I went to the novel to see whether I was right or wrong or do you think it was you lack of any sort of damning proof or appeals to authority that did me in?

When Tydririum arrives, the rebel force sees several ISDs and the Executor. They aren't too shocked by this, meaning this could be the amount of defenders they were expecting. Later, Leia sees the dots on the screen. "Han, the fleet!" etc. This can be interpreted as, look, there is our fleet OR oh no, the fleet will be ambushed. Judging from her tone of voice and look of surprise I'm leaning towards the latter. Then, when the rebel fleet arrives, it's a trap. If it is a trap, there must be more ships than expected.
