Favorite SciFi Ship

Post by JediMaster415 »

A couple days ago, I was watching Firefly and I got to thinking about why I liked Serenity.

The cargo bay is nice and big, giving a rather open feeling to otherwise claustrophobic surroundings. Also, I'm a sucker for grating on a starship. I don't know why, though I think grating over a light has a nice effect. The crew quarters are, in comparison with the main ships of other series, cramped and have a real lived-in feeling.

Just thought I'd post this to get it out of my system and to get other people's opinion on their favorite scifi ship. I apologize if this has been done (most likely has), I just couldn't find a previous thread before.

I love the internals of Serenity, but I hate the externals. It looks like a bird - and I guess that was intended - but I still didn't like the aesthetic design.

I think they were going for a half-bird/half-firefly design. I also noticed that the shuttles resembled Serenity around the cockpit.

Star Destroyers are classics, but I think my vote has to go for 40k battle barges. Floating cathedrals of destruction filled to the brim with the Angels of Death.

What's 40K? My sci-fi experience mainly extends to Star Wars, Star Trek, Firefly, Independence Day, Dune and Crusade.

This is so hard to choose. I'll list various shows instead.

Dr Who: Tardis. No question.
Star Wars: Vengance class Imperial Battlecruiser.
Star Trek: D'Deridex - the Valdore was a little too anorexic for my taste.
Babylon 5: Vorlon light cruiser
Stargate SG1: Apophis' Flagship
SGA: The city ship itself.
BSG: Old base-star
40k: Cairn class tombship.
Red Dwarf: The Dwarf itself of course.

When I looked at Serenity, I always thought of a horse.

I like Talyn, the crossbreed Leviathian-Peacekeeper gunship from Farscape. The bridge was nice, and the internals were ok, but I really liked the aesthetics of the exterior.

Of course I like Dahak, the pride of the 5th Imperium :)

A Xeelee Nightfighter, for pure deadliness and toughness. When you can laugh at the Death STar and live to tell the tale, it's something

The AlphaSynth Megarea is also a very nice ship in itself.

Aesthetically, the Minbari cruisers always seemed intriguing, as did the Vorlon ships.
And Romulan ships had a certain something, as well.

Star Wars: X-wing looks nice, and is probably my favourite starfighter. ISDs are my favourite capship, bar none.

Star Trek: Defiant. Not only does it look the best in terms of aesthetics, but it also looks tough and sturdy. That's for Starfleet. Non-starfleet, I give it to the Romulan Warbird. Very elegant design, doesn't look sturdy, but as a first-strike spacecraft it doesn't necessarily need to look sturdy (since it's not meant to have high-endurance).

Babylon 5: The Hyperion. It has a 'gritty' look to it, it's by no means uber, and it doesn't have an embarassing spinning deck. The earth ships in general look the best, Narn come second (the two are on relatively equal terms in technology, with the Narn slightly ahead IIRC). My least favourite ships are the Minbari.

Farscape: Aeryn's prowler. Nothing else really looks cool or well put together, but the Prowler has an elegant look to it.

My favourite ships are my own ships :D

But otherwise i like the Sharlin of the Minbari very much,
because they got some kind of biomechnaic look :D
In addition i like the Paradigm destroyer and Centurion
of Wingcommander:Privateer.
Thinking about more realistic space ships i like the
Starfury of Babylon 5 very much.

Talyn from Farscape. I've just finished watching season three and I have to say it was a shame to blow him up. He was a really cool looking ship.

Aeryn's prowler isn't that bad either although I'd take Dargo's personal ship over the prowler. His ship has some powerful weapons.

I shrunk some of your text there, as we have at least one person who's currently watching Farscape from season one, and he'll bitch if he gets spoiled. :P

In terms of looks, I like the Wrath of Achilles from Andromeda. The Wrath just looks big, mean, and dangerous. Somehow, it reminds me of a tarantula on steroids.

In terms of personality, I like the GCU Grey Area (from the Culture). "Vastly superior power, in my case."

D7/K'T'inga.
The juxtaposition of the organic looking command pod with the warp nacelles and their booms dropping at multiple angles, along with the bat-winged main hull; the damned thing sings to me.

I love the design of the Vorlon Warships, they just look so alien and imposing.

Stardestroyer, perenial favorite.
Azgard battleships look damn cool. The rest of my faves are all mentioned already.

The TOG battleships, Ultor & Shiva, from the Renegade Legion also look good and there is something satisfying about a Battleship built around a monster cannon.

#1 is the Executor, no contest. It combines elegance and no nonsense tough looks more effectively than any other ship.

Home One is pretty good also.

Shadow Battlecrabs, Vorlon cruisers and Minbari cruisers.

I always loved the description of those Honorverse ships: long, with a 'hammerhead' on each end and huge gravity sails trailing--something about it gave me the image of a dildo with huge energy sails.

In SW, everyone says ISDs or SSDs but they dont thrill me, to...plain. Now, i find the design of the Millennium Falcon far more cool. Anyone else think it looks like a flying saucer? Hmm...

In novels we get some very interesting ship designs:

Dahak, a vast bronze sphere with the image of a dragon on it's hull.

Some of the Hyperionverse ships have morphic armor and fixed-energ fields, i'd give them the style award.

And then the 'teardrop' shapes from Lensmen, though i admit i could never truely visualize how something like that could land, it would look SWEET flying in space.

Vorlon, Shadow, Mimbari and First One ships always struck me as cool.

The City Destroyers from ID4 were very sweet, Lord knows i'd like to get my hands on one...

Serenity from Firefly--beautiful aesthetics here, very birdlike and with that neat glowy ass thing, like a Firefly. For once a ship that looked like it's designation, not easy to manage.

Finally the Talyn from Farscape. What can i say--it mixes that kick ass stingray look from Moya with some actual firepower, very cool.

love the whitestars and vorlon ships from babylon 5. the defiant from DS9 is one of the few trek ship designs i can honestly say i like. Boba Fett's Slave-1 from star wars was also pretty cool, simply because you don't see too many ships with that unique a design.
