Just finished Doom 3 Expansion
Errr, really meh.
The Grabber, which is Nerve and ID's piss-poor attempt at ripping off HL2's Grav gun, is really useful for only two things: throwing Imp fireballs back at the Imps, and tossing flammable barrels at enemies; and the latter happened so infrequently that it might as well not be. As for the first, sometimes I'd rather just pull out my regular guns and just put down the Imps the good ole-fashioned way: with a hail of lead or plasma.
The double-barreled shotgun rocks though. Each BOOM really feels like a BOOM, and if you're close enough, you can put down most enemies with a single blast.
A little spoiler section about that "artifact"The artifact here basically has three (or four, I forgot) levels, which you advance every time you beat a boss. The first two or three make you slow down time around you, so you can run rings around your enemies and pack em with lead up close. The latter levels also makes your weapons insta-kill, it seems. Activate artifact, pull out shotgun, run up to Hell Knight's face and put it down with a single shot.
You have to find human souls (basically normal human bodies) to recharge the artifact.
The artifact is much more offense-oriented than the Soul Cube, which may or may not fit your tastes better. End spoiler.
What else is there, oh yes: The end boss of the expansion is MUCH harder than the Cyberdemon of the original. You can probably guess that it's Betruger, and he's pretty hard to put down.
As for the ending? Blows balls even harder than the original Doom 3's ending, if you can conceive of that.

This myth about a ripoff is getting old in the tooth, Shinova. The Grabber isn't a ripoff of the Grav Gun. It was in Doom3 before anyone knew HL2 was going to be half physics demo/half game. iD took it out because they thought it wouldn't add much to the gameplay experience. Sadly for them, they were wrong. I heard the imp fireballs will kill the imps themselves in one hit. That's sort of lame y'know
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

HL2 was in development for what.... 7 years was it? Valve could've conceived of the Grav gun anytime during that time before the Grabber was in Doom 3.
But whatever anyhow. You can throw Hell Knight plasma back at them too, but it doesn't kill in one hit.

It doesn't matter if Gabe Newell concieved of the Gravity Gun while jerking off in a basement at the age of fourteen. It can't be a ripoff if the DOOM 3 designers didn't know about it.Shinova wrote:HL2 was in development for what.... 7 years was it? I agree with Hamel - HL2 was much more a tech demo than a fulfilling game experience. I mean, so was Doom3, but you know...
When did people learn of the Gravgun? I'm pretty sure the UT2k4 gravgun mod was a fanmade copy of the HL gravgun seen in trailers at that time. Early versions allowed two people to grab each other, and fly by spinning like a gyroscope

Re: Just finished Doom 3 Expansion
I have a bit of a question, actually. I occasionally in Doom 3 step into... something, and the screen goes all fucked up, blurry and the angles all go downwards (usually accompanied by booming laugh). The second time this happened, I was in a room full of zombies, though it was so dark I can't say if I walked in or was suddenly teleported or something.

Okay, another of these areas is in Delta Labs 2. The screen goes all red, and you can't move for a few seconds. The instant it switches back to normal, a bunch of Imps swarm out (of course). So my question is, again, what the hell is that?

If the screen goes red as well, that might be stuff spawning in. FROM HELL!YT300000 wrote:Okay, another of these areas is in Delta Labs 2. Did the screen merely go red, or did the walls suddenly start like,, I dunno, drooling blood and fire popping up outta nowhere like you were having a vision or something?
In-story, that's supposed to be the normal reality getting closer and closer to Hell, I think.
In Doom 3 original, if you go into one of the bathrooms, I think you have the privelage of seeing your first "vision" before everything hit the fan.
Oh yeah, I think the original Doom 3 guy looks better. What do you people think (for those who've played the expansion)?

I didn't notice any fire, but when everything went red, the walls did... buckle? They moved in a wave-like way, and there was that freaky voice (Bertruger?) that spoke in that wierd Hell language, but there was also a whoosing sound. Just in general fucked-up.Shinova wrote:YT300000 wrote:Okay, another of these areas is in Delta Labs 2. The screen goes all red, and you can't move for a few seconds. As for the bathroom thing, do you mean before the demons came and all?

Ah, then that's probably normal for the screen to go red briefly then the wall start like...distorting or buckling or whatever. It happens a lot throughout the game.
And yeah, you get your first vision in the bathroom before the containment field thingy broke and the demons first started coming through.
Not everyone necessarily goes to the bathroom so some people don't see it. I didn't until I finished the game first, then started again and took a look around.

The Doom 3 expansion is much less about story and more about killing shit. The double barreled shotgun is fucking awesome, but also goes through the ammo FAST. And by the time you get it, Imps are no longer your problem.
I do like how it seems some people where smart in their survival this time. Two people used sentry bots specificaly to protect themselves. And those senties kick ass as usual.

Dunno whether it varies according to the difficulty level, but when I did it, the screen went odd and you can see a decaying version of yourself in the mirror.DPDarkPrimus wrote:I've heard five different stories about what happens in there. The bathroom incident is after all hell breaks loose. If you enter there before, nothing happens.
Basicaly the screen goes all screwy, you see yourself in the mirror and you age and decay very rapidly (but not rot or anything).
