Cortosis... Canon?
well at first it was just jedi knight games, now (first time for me) i see it in Star Wars Republic comics. So my question is... Is Cortosis canon? or is it just an invention perpetuated?

Games are C-level in and of themselves (apart of game mechanics) and since Cortosis is a story point in all I've played it's Canon.

meh, I always figured that it wasn't really wankage, so what, cortosis fibers? There's a lot more wanked things than that in the EU, so I don't really see it as a bad thing. Makes duels more exciting. As far as the game mechanics are concerned, it was never that bad, just keep smacking him with the lightsaber, and he's bound to lose his head at an inopportune time

Cortosis ore sets up a feedback in a lightsaber, and shuts it down on contact. It's not just lightsaber resistant.

IIRC only some types Cortosis do that not all.NecronLord wrote:Cortosis ore sets up a feedback in a lightsaber, and shuts it down on contact. It's not just lightsaber resistant.

According to the games. I'm not sure if that is canon though.Lord Revan wrote:IIRC only some types Cortosis do that not all.

does changing it change the story, (in this case it would since part of imperial strike force in Jedi Outcast) would become next to impossible to defeat).NecronLord wrote:According to the games. I'm not sure if that is canon though.Lord Revan wrote:IIRC only some types Cortosis do that not all.

Not really. Luke and Kyle seemed to think that the reborn were inferior in training to the jedi apprentices. They were also doing pretty well until Kyle arrived IMO.Lord Revan wrote:does changing it change the story, (in this case it would since part of imperial strike force in Jedi Outcast) would become next to impossible to defeat).

yeah but shadow could be killed by lightsaber, but if their armor would shutdown Lightsabers, the NJO would be defeated (no Jedi could kill them and their cloaks would help to get into saber range of troopers not mention that Kyle might not be able to get to academy). one reason the NJO was doing well was that all of it's opponents could defeated without the use of the Force (Reborns had limited or no armor and Shadow trooper had their Cortosis armor).NecronLord wrote:Not really. I'm not sure, while that makes sense IIRC the different effect are caused by different types Cortosis (both refined and unrefined).Stofsk wrote:Is it possible that unrefined cortosis (the kind that shuts down lightsabers after it makes an incision into it, meaning the lightsaber still cuts through cortosis, just bit by bit) has different properties to refined cortosis (which doesn't shut down lightsabers, but seems to resist the cut)?

Most of KOTOR would be invalidated if it was. All the Jedi characters would simply bitch slapped by non-Force senstives, who would block a lightsabre with their Cortosis-weaved vibroblades once, and proceed to slice the Jedi in half (well, the Jedi would have to rely on Force powers a lot more, and would soon become tired and succumb, ie no Star Forge hallway battles).NecronLord wrote:According to the games. you have remember Canon lightsabers are more or less one hit kill weapons so the battles would like against the IG-100, but non-Force user wouldn't advantace of droid reflexes. There nothing in KOTOR that prevents lightsaber resistant Cortosis (infact that's part of the game).YT300000 wrote:Most of KOTOR would be invalidated if it was. either that or the Jedi would just start using cortosis weapons themselves instead of lightsabers.YT300000 wrote:Most of KOTOR would be invalidated if it was. Which one? Having other stuff that can resist lightsabers appeared before the games true (and even goes back to the OT), it was just convenient to use in the games as an explanation, like anything else. Rather than just have an enemy take two hits to kill with a saber "just because" (makes the game more challenging) you can say it's being canonical.
The Jedi are screwed.. get together your army of Ysalamiri carrying, cortosis armor wearing, personal force field possessing, strong willed martial artists with unblockable/unforcepushable weapons. Uh... umm... it's too expensive. Yeah, that's the ticket!
Hey, at least it sounds more reasonable than some aliens who are just out of tune with the universe or something. These little plot devices are canonical and can be used together right?
And true, there's nothing stopping the Jedi from using all those helpful technologies to gain an advantage, except repressive "traditions" and game mechanics (everybody knows Jedi can only use Lightsabers and wear desert robes for protection in battle!).
It wouldn't have been much of a problem. The Reborns didn't wear cortosis (just regular clothing). The Shadowtroopers would have made using Lightsaber almost completely useless (assuming one touch on their armor deactivated or shorted out a saber), but they would still be vulnerable to Force powers and other weapons. Kyle carries a load of guns and explosives, remember? The more traditional Jedi would have been forced to employ other tactics against them (and use their sabers only for defense or I guess to cut the other guy's hilt in half, unless those two are made of cortosis!).Lord Revan wrote:yeah but shadow could be killed by lightsaber, but if their armor would shutdown Lightsabers, the NJO would be defeated (no Jedi could kill them and their cloaks would help to get into saber range of troopers not mention that Kyle might not be able to get to academy). one reason the NJO was doing well was that all of it's opponents could defeated without the use of the Force (Reborns had limited or no armor and Shadow trooper had their Cortosis armor).NecronLord wrote:Not really. Anyway, since in Jedi Outcast, sufficient water shorts out lightsabers as well, they could employ fire hoses to great effect...

The cortosis idea was actually used by Michael Stackpole before Zahn thought of using it. In I, Jedi there was a group called the Jenssari(Sp?) who used Cortosis fibres in their armour to provide protection from Lightsabers. And IIRC I, Jedi was out long before Jedi Outcast, KOTOR or The Thrawn Duology.

Shadow armour wasn't perfect. I always imagine I'm stabbing them through the neck or some such when I kill them.

That's exactly what I'm saying. Does it make sense that in KOTOR the weapons were a "Cortosis Weave" and not necessarily 100% Cortosis?

The weapons would need to be processed somehow. IIRC according to Vision of the Future the Cortosis in the Hand of Thrawn was brittle enough to break underfoot.Darth Fanboy wrote:Does it make sense that in KOTOR the weapons were a "Cortosis Weave" and not necessarily 100% Cortosis?
