By that, I mean, while people go and protest with him, they are not necessarily part of his church. IIRC, his church isn't even a church in the legal sense.

I believe Phelps does claim tax-free status as a church, based on the fact that he has an actual building (his house), a congregation (his extended family), and other stretches of the imagination.

When disputed, one or more of his children who studied law file all sorts of nonsense/nuisance lawsuits.

If you don't mind losing some enamel off your back molars, search for Freddie's name on the web - look for the page written by an estranged son, which goes into great detail about dear old Dad. (Son is going straight to hell, of course.)

Freddie was a lawyer but was disbarred, IIRC. He can file the lawsuits himself or get one of his kids to do it using the information he gives them. He's very good at pulling legalistic crap to protect himself.
