So you need a wing of Star fighters...

Post by Crossroads Inc. »

With all the controversy going on right now over in the “Which would you prefer to use” Thread concerning TIE Interceptors and X-Wings, with it slowly degrading into sides vigorously debating what is best in terms of a StarFighter, it got me to thinking.

There should never be one All-powerful Fighter that can fill ALL Roles, so what’s to argue about? The TIE Interceptor can do things the X-Wing cannot, and vice-vrsa. Of course, what the debate leaves out, is all the other many MANY StarFighters in the SW universe.

All the Old Republic fighters, all the Reble ‘Letter Wing’ Fighters, all of the other Imperial fighters. And then all of the ‘Alien’ Fighters, best among then the ‘Storms’ from the Hapans’ There is close to 30 all together.

So, rather then just ask “Whats Best” since no ONE ship ((minus wanking)) can be all powerful, I will give you the opportunity to put together a whole Wing of fighters. Your pick, your choice, of the ones you think would work best together.

I figure the best assembly for a starfighter wing would be:

2 X-Wing squadrons (T-65B or XJ3, I like both) (for escort missions and dogfighting)
1 Y-Wing squadron (for the bombing runs)
1 A-Wing squadron (for the hit-and-run recon missions)
2 TIE squadrons (Either Defender or Interceptor) (for escort missions and dogfighting)

THat's just based on what I prefer and I'm an X-Wing fan anyway.

What are we making this wing for? We don't need to worry about hyperdrive if it's going to be staying near its base, and things like that.

Or is this simply a general all-purpose wing?

Unless you have something special in mind ((In which case state it before hand)) this is a General Purpose Wing.
Me? I would have the following.

36-shielded TIE Interceptors
Faster and quicker then almost anything, and shielded, would make feel far more at ease over sending pilots out in them

24-TIE Avengers
Nearly all the power of a TIE Defender for far less cost.

12-Skipray GunBoats
Massive firepower considering thier realtivly 'small' size, huge Missiles, Torps, Guns and Ion Cannons.

Why no TIE Defenders? Cool as they are, I have come to the conclusion that they are simply too much Wanking... They are no bigger then a Standard TIE, and there is no place to explain where the Hyperdrive, shields, or extra power would be on that thing. TIE Avengers are nearly just as nice, and far more believable

I think E-wings should be added to the list of banned wank ships. After reading about it in the EGTVV, I wonder why the New Republic even bothered with any other fighters after they came out.

-It's more durable than the X-wing.
-It matches the TIE Interceptor in speed and maneuverability.
-I has 16 proton torpedoes - so much firepower that the book says that it can act as an assault fighter and can be used for missions which B-wings are too slow for.

If we're allowed to use gunboats...

12 Skipray Gunboats
The heavy muscle of my wing.

24 ARC-170 (naval bomber variant)
Secondary heavy firepower, capable of dogfighting if absolutely necessary.

32 TIE Interceptors
Agile, bare-bones escorts for the attack fighters and able to defend from hostile fighters.

12 Missile Boats (TIE Fighter version)--True lords of the dance, these things offer phenomenal firepower, speed, and maneuverability. They also have beam-weapon hardpoints and as a squadron they would effectively demolish the enemy. Also fulfill a bomber role against enemy warships. Hyperdrive must be faster than that of a TIE Defender because some missions in TIE Fighter indicate that the Missile Boat was the ONLY craft fast enough to get to a combat zone in time to make a difference and so it went in unsupported. The Missile Boat offers tremendous versatility, since it is extremely effective against either starfighters or larger ships. With support from the TIE Defenders, this squadron would be unstoppable. The Missile Boat offers unparalleled control of the battlefield (for a starfighter), since it can essentially dictate the way in which starfighter engagements are fought.
36 TIE Defenders (XJ X-Wings would be an alternative, but I'm not convinced that they offer better speed, and in spite of their additional torpedo launcher the Defender has the versatility of using concussion missiles and better maneuverability)--The Defender, at least until the upgraded E-wing and the XJ was the undisputed king of space superiority. With integrated hyperdrive, beam weapon, shields, and missile hardpoints it also offered better speed and maneuverability than any other TIE. More weapons, too. What's not to love?
12 Scimitar class bombers (the K-wing is probably a more effective craft, but I refuse to consider the thing a part of the EU because of the piss-poor quality of the books which introduced it)--Excellent in a ground-attack mode (where the missile boat would fall off), the Scimitar also offers anti-capital ship capability.
12 TIE Phantoms--useful as both scouts and as anti-starfighter ships, they probably also have potential as raiders and against small capital ships which move around without their shields up. Great alpha-strike potential.

Removing the wankage ships (aka all of those except the Scimitar and possibly the TIE Defender):

12 B-wings
36 XJ X-wings
24 A-wings

A good general purpose wing would be (1) squadron of interceptors; (1) squadron of assualt fighters; and (4) squadrons of superiority fighters or multipurpose fighters.

The actual make and modle would depend on so many factors from money, training, pilots, supply, equipment, bases, mission and likely threats ect.

1 x Squadron A-Wings
1 x Squadron B-Wings
4 x Squadron X-Wings

Went with Rebel craft because even though I prefer the Empire the Rebel fighters have shields and can take a pounding.

Cpl Kendall edit: Changed Y-Wing to B-Wing, because they have a better weapons suite.

Personally, I'd take the B-wings over the Y-wings but.....

Never see a Y-wing do much besides fly down a trench either, so......

If anything the weapons load out of a B-wing is better. That and they're cool looking.

12 XJ-Wings for general all purpose work
12 K-Wings for hurting capships
12 Chiss Clawcraft because they seem cool
12 E-Wings for the real heavy fighter swarms
12 Tie Interceptors (With Shields) for Interception. Can't have an A-Wing slash with no A-Wings :P
12 Scimitar Assault Bombers for supporting ground engagements

24 x Skiprays for bombing, and soaking up damage. Those things are tough!

48 x shielded TIE-avengers for superiority. Better than Vader's fighter, lots o guns, plus shields!

Alternate:

60 x Skiprays. Cause they'll eat anything that even comes close to it.
12 x TIE-phantoms, for the sneak attack on the rear.

for anti-fighter work:

36 x missile boats. lots of missiles. LOTS.
36 x TIE-avengers, for when they run out of missiles.

2 squads of TIE Avengers. Superiority, with enough acceleration to fill in the interceptor role.
1 squad of Missile Boats. Missiles are good.
1 squad of B-wings. Shielding and ion cannons are good.
2 squads of X-wings. Superiority, and support.

I would pick TIE Advanced and Scimitars Assault Bombers, probably in a 2-1 or 3-1 ratio. Sticking with only two very similiar designs gives me flexability with scheduling, support, maintance, training, etc. Both craft are top of the line with good firepower and survivablity, and their hyperdrives allow for greater mission flexability. This arrangement may not be as 'colorful' as some of the other suggestions given so far, but one ignores KISS at their own peril.
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

They seem to do well enough against the TIEs at Yavin. Not great craft, of course. Not really top-of-the-line, nor focused towards any particular role.
