Best Urban combat FPS

Post by Setzer »

Which game does the best job of simulating city-fighting? Halo 2 had its moments, but I also like Red Faction II. Since you could blow through so much terrain, it did a better job of simulating city fighting. I like that one level where you are fighting enemies on floors below you and have to work your way downwards by using explosives.

Half-life 2, mainly because of the physics engine and the eastern-european look of the city.
EDIT: "simulating" in a realistic fashion?

Brothers in Arms

Nothing says loving like turning a corner and being shot dead by a MG-42 before your brain even has time to process the threat.

Day of Defeat v1.3 (pre-Valve release - it had its problems, but it was the best version of DoD IMO). Good fun, good balance.

America's Army. A little different style, but the urban maps are excellent.

Infiltration.

As an aside, I found HLs combat to be quite boring. Excellent engine, but what Valve did with it was derivative. Good thing INF is going to HL2 then ;)

Deus Ex was a little unrealistic damage-wise, but I loved how you just couldn't run in and kill everything (well, by the last few levels, I just turned on all my augmentations and went Terminator on everyone's ass, but that's just at the very end). Not sure if that counts though.

I thought DoD did a good job - peek around, get a burst full of MG-42 and die. HL2's graphics are great for urban combat, but the gameplay doesn't really simulate it well, but you can bet mods using the HL2 engine will be great.

Raven Shield for sure..... Be cautious, time everything well, work as a team, still get shot and die.

I only played one thing that could be in this category, I don't usually do FPS.. but Call of Duty seemed pretty good during it's town levels.

I guess someone should mention SWAT 4, since it's 'urban' and the demo was amazing.

Bought SWAT 4 the other day.... Its cool, but has some small issues. But it easily beats out anything else for the urban combat title.

Funny, I thought that was Halo.

note: edited to make it clear that was a joke

Matt, its a common problem. Deus Ex had horrific AR recoil along with pathetic damage. At least the pistol didn't have a scope

What's up with SWAT4? I didn't know it was out here yet. Is it team AI or more fundamental problems?

Operation Flashpoint > Other solder sims

Not much urban-ness, but just getting into towns and villages is something that has to be done very, very carefully. In terms of the whole combat experience, Op Flash is better. For pure urban combat, I dunno.

CoD Stalingrad level was fun urban-ness.

I haven't played the rest of the game though.

To be honest, I only ever used the HE ammo, but yeah...

The point still stands that you couldn't just run in DOOM style and bitch-slap everything. That plus the great atmosphere, sound, story and everything makes that one of the best games ever, even if it was heinously unrealistic in that regard.

Well, I thought Deus Ex was rubbish, but it certainly kills the rambos nice and quick. :)

RO is a nice bit of lethal WW2 urban combat, but I doubt anyone here would enjoy it. Alien Swarm is technically urban, but not really an FPS.

ESPECIALY in multiplayer.

God we had some fun games at a lan weekend one day years ago.

We always had two teams. One holding a town, one attacking. The only rules were the attacking team couldn't simply RPG the town to death or anything. The defenders however had one RPG shot.

It was fucking classic. People REALLY started to get creative. One time when we were attacking, we took 10 mins to crawl a sniper into a good position, he held fire and just slowly looked into every house and every location to get info for us. Then we (the attacking team were allowed to use trucks) deployed in three fireteams around the town, using terain to our advantage.

BLOODY, BLOODY battle. They wipped out our Northern team with the RPG after someone gave the game away by getting up from prone to rush to a new location. They sent out a few people to have a look around the North to make sure everyone was dead. The other two fireteams (mine and anotherguy) ran in from the South and West and got up behind their buildings, then inside two of them. We were actualy communicating (somewhat) via hand signals IN THE LAN so the people in the other room wouldn't hear us. We got two of the buildings in the south, then had a nice little stalingrad room to room war. God I loved my M-60

It got even more interesting when we tried it at night. Setting off parachute flairs all over the place with the occasional bust of fire from the woods REALLY freaked those campers out to HELL. While our supressed MP5 guys slowly snuck in from the West

BEST version though was when the teams were uneven. We turned two of the bad guy team into neutral hostages (no weapon on them) and had to rescue them. GOD I wished we had had flashbangs in this game. It was pure hell. We did get an M113 to offset their advantages...but their RPG kinda made it useless.

So we just camped their building and shot through the windows, throwing smoke grenades into their doorways and watching them waste ammo in a panic :D

I wonder when the hell Flashpoint II will get released.
