For a Friday Good Laugh

Post by Tommy J »

Ok, I'm debating this rapid Fundi on the FreeJesus.net site and I post this from Mike's page about bible quotations:
Joshua 10:11-14: First God helps the Isrelites murder their enemies. But the kicker with this is the sun stopped in the sky. Please tell me you don't really believe such a thing happened?

Quote:
As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the LORD hurled large hailstones down on them from the sky, and more of them died from the hailstones than were killed by the swords of the Israelites. On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the LORD in the presence of Israel: "O sun, stand still over Gibeon, O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon."

So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the LORD listened to a man. Surely the LORD was fighting for Israel!

And the man Aieno replies with this.
As to Joshua 10:11-14 what do you mean with your question “do you really believe that this happened”? Do you mean the sun standing still? Is so, then maybe you should do some research since some astronomers have verified that the sun apparently stood still for a period of time in the past. I will see if I can find the proof online.

This man actually believes the Earth [for a day] stopped spinning on its Axis.

UN FUCKING BELIEVABLE!

Let us know if he finds his "proof online". And make sure he tells you where he found this 'proof'.

Where is someone going to find credible 'proof' of such an absurd claim?

But I'll let you folks know if he does from some idiot pseudo scientist for yet another laugh.

If he does find this "proof" there is no way in hell that it will come from anywhere near someone even bearing a passing resemblance to a legitimate astronomer. I'd bet dollars to donuts it will be from some ridiculous fundi website. I can't even call this pseudoscience, that would be giving it too much credit.

Is he saying that at one point, the sun stopped circling the galaxy, or is he saying that the earth stopped rotating? both are bullshit, in anycase.

Qt: would all the people and objects on earth suddenly be flung forward if the Earth stoped rotating all at once, due to inertia? would oceans have massive tidal waves, and such? if so, then you can disprove his claim by showing that such an event would have been recorded by every civilization existing at the time, and would have some geologic marks. Not that you need to work that hard anyways.

It floated about the net in a bullshit chain email thing...I laughed my ass off when I read it since anyone with a firing neuron could see the problem with plotting backwards from current positions to discover such a thing...plotting backwards wouldnt indicate even if it had happened ;)

The bible quotation implies that for an entire day, the sun stood stationary in the sky. Thus one would assume it stopped rotating. It's utter nonesense.

And, quite frankly scary to me that someone actually believes such.

Here's a link to a Snopes article about this claim. Needless to say, it's false according to them.

But, but, I thought God wasn't going to give evidence, 'cause we're supposed to take it all on faith these days...

That's the beauty of the internet. No matter how silly the idea, someone has created a site backing it up.
