Damn ... rode the maglev train from the Shanghai airport into town, and then back to the airport on my way out ....

When you're in ground transportation that is moving along at 250 mph, at some point you start to wonder if maybe there shouldn't be a seatbelt or airbag.

Damned cool technology, though ... takes about 3 minutes to accelerate to its top speed of 430 km/h (digital clock & speedometer in every car lets you know what's happening), cruises at top speed for about one minute, then declerates slowly. 7-minute ride total, but that first corner that you take at 350 km/h .... man, I'm just not used to a train having to use a BANKED curve.

if the train comes to a grinding halt all of a sudden and you're moving at 250mph, a seatbelt isn't going to do you much in the way of good.

I'm just not used to a train having to use a BANKED curve.
Actually, most railroads already employ banked curves on mainlines: not as steep as on that maglev though...

That is F'ing svweeet...

I swear, if I ever get to Europe, getting to ride the Mag-Lev is going to be tops for me. Sure seeing all the History and stuff will be nice too, but in a Meg-Lev, It's got to be the closest I'll ever get to cruising a Starship.

Yeah, I've ridden the Thalys from Paris up to Amsterdam, and it definitely has a little banking, but nothing like that Chinese maglev, you are *really* leaning into the corner in that puppy.

hehe. My dormmates actually drove all the way to philly just to get "real" philly cheesesteaks. Took them about 6 or so hours to pull it off. With a northeast corridor maglev, it would be much faster.

Its pretty sad when a country like china can afford maglev, or at least be willing to pay for it but the richest nation in the world still doesnt even have any and doesnt appear to be even trying.

4-meg movie, Maglev at full speed, leaving traffic in the dust

Taken with the QuickTime movie feature on my digital camera, it's not terrible but it's not Spielberg ....

Is there a working line in Europe? There are plans for a Berlin-Hamburg line but there have been plans for that for a long time now.

There's the test track somehwere in Northern Germany, but the Shanghai one is the only real-life useable version of the Transrapid. Constant political bickeirng in Germany means that it won't be built in the homeland of that technology for the forseeable future...

Well, capitalism has a little to do with it ... I think China loses a ton of money operating theirs, it's a high-tech 'prestige' project, not a money-maker.

After Concorde, the last thing the EU is psyched about is high-speed transportation that looks cool but hemorrhages money.

AFAIK, the European projects were calculated to actually make profit.
This one for example

Hey, if that was the case I'd say build it, I'd say subsidize building it if it would pay its own operating costs when in operation. I'd want one that ran down the west coast from Vancouver to Cabo with stops in Portland, S.F., and L.A.

I think USA would benefit from a Maglev system that loops between the major cities.

Why doesnt the USA want to try MagLev? Economics, Engineering?

Politics.

The USA train lines will not touch consumer transport unless you force them too.

The Japanese have taken to heavily fining the families of people who suicide via bullet trains to handle the cleanup costs.
