Great, I just had to post there. Part of the thread has gone from shields and weapons to EM pulses and Ion Cannons. I made my point, and I had to leave a pithy comment afterwards. Half of them probably won't get it.

Vympel wrote:Servo, did you respond to hairball's latest arguments? It's pretty obvious he's making massive factual distortions- see for example his claim that AT-STs succumbed to Ewok traps before and not after Chewie stole one. No one whose actually seen RotJ could possibly claim that.
I did one response to that crap, but he referenced the script which has the AT-STs going down first and its impossible to post the entire battle from the film even though the film overrides the scripts.

Anyone know where those idiots came up with my apparent nickname "If Wishes Were Horses"?

It's the title of a DS9 episode, where crewmembers' fantasies start to manifest themselves (among others, Rumplestilskin). Sounds like they're giving you the nick because they think you want your fantasies about SW's supremacy to be real.

Psychological projection is an amazing thing to behold, isn't it?

Could some one help me what is the full quote (starting from the point were the ship appears and ending when we leave the bridge) from The Outrageous Okona that deals with the laser armed ship. I have been through 2 different scripts but both have the original lines and not what they really filmed.

Why bother? Context means nothng to these fools. The Laws of Physics mean nothing to these fools. You could have Gene Roddenberry himself arise from the dead and proclaim that 'Okona' was indeed flawed. You could have George Lucas declare that Turbolasers and Lasers are two different things. All for naught.

That smiley is SOOOOOO appropriate for those idiots but they don't have a similar one (would Spock jacking off even be funny?) and I can't do a like to the one on this site because the url contains the word "wank"

One of them said he was working on the ultimate refutation of me and all my flawed arguments and promised it would be up today. Has anyone seen it? If so, could you post a link?

I'll be sure to check this one out. In short, his argument will center around his misrepresentation of the word "Laser" as used in the ICS (which is actually a concession that he accepts ICS and EU meterial as valid for the debate) combined with whatever quote Glimmervoid is looking for right now from the TNG episode "The Outrageous Okona."

From as far back as February, the DMJ troll has yet to substantially prove his military experience to anyone's satisfaction but his own. He has employed almost every debate fallacy I've seen in the stickied threads, made slanderous remarks against numerous people including but not limited to Servo, and is in short an internet terror. I'm appalled at the lack of moderation over there on their forums, despite their ToS policy.

More to come... 8)

Well, the asshole has been banned three or four times. He just gets a new hotmail or other free email account and signs up again.

'Cause they need all the fans they can get right now.

Seriously, an IP Ban assumes the moderators have that tool in their arsenal. More than likely, 'board moderation' is only part of the workload of staffers whose primary responsibility is preparing daily content, and the hassle of IP banning someone isn't high on their list.

Additionally, even if they carry out a ban against 'DMJ,' an IP ban would likely have to be carried out at the next level up. (When I worked on an online game, lockout/bans had to go through several levels, and the dreaded product-wide lockout - a ban from all of our games - was handled by the main office.)

What seems to shoot st.com in the foot is that their accounts are identified by e-mail addresses, not an account name like ST_BRAGASUX or DS_ILUV7. Therefore, DMJ and DMJ2 are actually different people, unless you have definitive proof that DMJ2 is the same person, you can't ban them outright - they have to break the rules (again).

Using the same insults, the same arguments is not definitive proof; I could repeat Mike's arguments from the main site, but it doesn't make me Mike Wong. Persisting in claims about his military career is closer, but making specious claims about one's real-life qualifications isn't against their terms-of-service, unless you say, "Hey, I work with Rick Berman, and he's a complete asshat!"

Ah, but I hear you saying, "Dude, if DMJ2 is making the same claims about his real-life as DMJ, they're the same guy!" Again, that's inferred; the previous claims are public record on the boards. It makes sense to us, it may be obvious to us ...

... but if the guy has a different e-mail address and a dynamic IP, how can you prove it? If he's lying about his military career, why do we assume he's used his real name and address on the st.com registration?

An IP ban would also lock someone out of the main st.com site, which is basically telling a fan to shove it. (Not that Berman & Braga haven't already done this.) I'd wager the Star Trek folks aren't willing to do that except for the most severe and egregious offenses.

How about him ADMITTING he's the same guy?

And its DMJ3 now.

Yeah, I ran into someone like that, too. Came back into the game, confided to several people in private as well as in public that he had been locked out ... when we pulled him aside, suddenly, he claimed to be someone else, that it was all a mistake, that he thought he'd be cool or something.

We locked him out a second time.

But then, as GM's, a large portion of our job was to maintain playability and a positive atmosphere. When we were only on AOL, our options were limited - we could punt a snert, and he'd come back moments later on a free trial diskette and a fake credit card. Once we moved to the net and established our own billing system, that didn't happen much.

Since startrek.com's boards are essentially a free community, I suspect the moderators don't have the time to police every single offense, and they're more than willing to allow DMJ back each time until he breaks the rules again. (I don't recall if their terms-of-service even threaten perma-bans of any kind.)

Frankly, I'd cut the kid loose and IP ban him. No franchise needs fans like that.

Yet Star Trek seems to attract them in droves. What is it about that show that attracts these arrogant idiots? Is it the show's pomposity? Is it the pseudo science that makes them feel like they don't need to pay attention in school? What?

Beats me. Don't get me wrong, I like Star Trek - but one of the problems with Trek Fandom has always been this creeping obsession with rank. That brought down the original Starfleet Command group, when people at the top decided folks in local groups had to jump through hoops to achieve ranks.

It persisted; when TNG came out, I was at a convention in Trek uniform, sitting at a table with another friend, and this woman asks if she can share the table. No big deal. She then goes on to introduce herself as Admiral such-and-such, <impressive title> for the <Trek Group>. Immediate turn off. I don't give a damn how many pips you bought or stuck on your collar, I ain't saluting or kissing your ass. It's fine if a fan chooses to recognize your rank or division, it's another thing if you EXPECT them to.

But Nex is right - there are board nazis and other losers hanging out in SW fandom as well. One person threw a fit when I started a topic on a Dark Side strategy for KOTOR, insisting that I should have 'read the other topic' (a Hints topic that ran over 90 pages and didn't even graze the topic I'd posted). Argued when I pointed that out, crowed that he 'won' the argument, and so on. (Me, I said, that's your opinion, if a moderator feels this is a redundant topic, they can lock it, otherwise just let it slide off the page. Board nazi immediately fires off smart-ass comment, which floated it back to the top of the stack.)

Maybe someone needs to complain that he's not only breaking the terms-of-service for the startrek.com boards, he's not living up to Gene's vision for the future.
