*smack smack* there's no yuna in FF7 either.Rye wrote:Bah, I meant Yuna, obviously.Darth_Zod wrote:ahem. there is no squall in FF7.Rye wrote: FF7, I'll be honest, I liked all the characters, even Squall and Yuffie and Vincent, irrespective of how pointless they were. I especially liked Nanaki, I thought he was great, he should have his own game.

To his credit, spending nearly four years in a test tube would make you go nuts. (Although he really wasn't much before Sephiroth went insane - hiding his face from his own hometown.) On top of this, he had all the physical characteristics (Thanks to Hojo) and the clothes and the sword (Thanks to Zak) of someone from SOLDIER.NeoGoomba wrote:Cloud. The damn bastard is a liar. And a whinny one at that.
Of course, it's really suspicious that Cloud begins moving again just mere moments after Zak gets shot.

I just remembered. Beatrix from FFIX. If she had just taken ALL my HP, I might've been able to respect her. Instead, she leaves everybody with 1, and as the battle's ending, I'm yelling "WTF! I can work with 1 HP!" And I never even got the satisfaction of kicking her ass. Damn you for joining me, bitch.

It's a bit difficult for the game to continue when four of the major characters are lying dead in the street.Trogdor wrote:I just remembered. Beatrix from FFIX. But they're not dead, they're not even supposed to be KOed, but for some reason, being reduced to 1 HP was enough to make my party lose because it was the all mighty Beatrix. Not being able to keep fighting even though I technically should always just pissed me off. It's just a matter of principal.Kuja wrote:It's a bit difficult for the game to continue when four of the major characters are lying dead in the street.

I don't know. I think his marrying/nailing/murdering Yuna thing was more a sideshow. It was very clear from FFX that his true desire is Tidus' anus. There was so much homoeroticism there, especially when Seymour kept whipping out his Giant Purple Probe Bots. You can even see Yuna's gaydar going off when Seymour steps off the boat in Luca and Seymour sees Tidus and the party. I wish Tidus and Seymour the best, because Tidus is clearly a bottom and they'd go great together as simulation-of-a-dead-person-from-a-thousand-years-ago/dead-evil-ghoul couples go.Nephtys wrote:Still, look at him. Seymour's this famous guy known for his flamboyant lifestyle, and has this weird effeminate voice and extremely pale skin. He also is a raging pedophile. Does this remind you of anyone from real life?

I always considered Cyan's 'She torched Miranda!' a bit of an exagerrated throw-away line. Kefka was the only one who we've ever seen actually massacre an entire city, and given Leo's refusal to consider the option, it's not a very common occurence. Kefka was insane, but Leo actually tried to obey the rules of war, and I'd wager that 18-year-old Celes would have, too. And hey: She did stab Kefka. That was a cool scene.Gil Hamilton wrote:Let's see:
Celes: Anything can be forgiving by love, even being the city murdering General of the Empire! I'm suprised that you didn't get attacked when you walked into Miranda with her. At least Runic was occasionally useful.
On-topic, though, I'd have to say Yuffie from FFVII (For reasons already mentioned). Wutai was easily the most irritating sidequest in any game I've ever played.
I thought Celes had been imprisoned for refusing to carry out nasty orders from Kefka or something along those lines. It's been a while since I played the game.Badme wrote:I always considered Cyan's 'She torched Miranda!' a bit of an exagerrated throw-away line. All I remember is that she was declared a "traitor". Apparently she wisened up to the Empire.
Bah, I'll grant you that Tidus is a jerk and it's hard to see what Yuna saw in him, but I don't get the Yuna hate. I liked the character a great deal. She's the true heroine of the FFX world, even if she dresses hot in FFX-2.

You've got a weird definition of true heroine. Yuna's got an awful voice actress in FFX.. better in FFX2, but she has no depth. She fits the depressingly long trends of three different female characters in FF...Steve wrote:All I remember is that she was declared a "traitor". Apparently she wisened up to the Empire.

A. Mary-Sue 'Oh no, I've been captured!' love interest healer-mage.
B. Spastic perky Jailbait character that is powered by pure sugar.
C. Barely-mobile character with two big polygons.
...this list is not particularly progressive, is it?
So Yuna's quite worthy of hate. Especially since she turns into a Tidus-clone in the second one, even picking up his habit of dressing in asymetrical pants. (Look at her gunner dress. The hell?)
Oh wait. I nearly forgot. FFX2 introduced a fourth kind of female character. The depressive leather-clad lesbian. Way to go, Japan. Great role models.
I think I'm rambling now. But goddess, I hate Yuna.

I point you all to this: http://project-apollo.net/text/rpg.html (Warning: Massive spoilers for a lot of games)Nephtys wrote:She fits the depressingly long trends of three different female characters in FF...
It is the Grand List of Console Role-Playing Game Cliches. Cliches 15, 16, and 17 (describing party members, antagonists, and NPCs) are particularly relevant to this conversation.
And, the reason there are three different female character types in FF, I refer you to Cliche 97, the Three Females Rule: There will be either one or three female characters in your party, regardless of how many male characters there are.
Although it's true that the FF games have a solid rule of three female characters (excepting FF 1, 3, and Tactics), they're not always the same type.CivilWarMan wrote:And, the reason there are three different female character types in FF, I refer you to Cliche 97, the Three Females Rule: There will be either one or three female characters in your party, regardless of how many male characters there are.
In fact, it's only really the female lead and the Other Woman that gets cloned game after game, and then only really when you're meant to have some kind of attraction to them.
(I'm not sure if that list picks up on the Other Woman rule, but Final Fantasy games which have some kind of love interest character also inevitably have the Other Woman, who you usually wish the lead would dump the love interest character for because they're so annoying.)

That list totally reads my mind. But let's take a look at the track record of the most recent games (excluding dirty, dirty FF9)
FF7
Personalityless Mary Sue: Aeris (Or if you're crazy, Aeritttttthhhhhhhh.)
Spastic Annoyance Dumb***: Yuffie (Oh, sorry for nearly killing all of you!)
Big Polygons: Tifa (I can't move!)
FF8
PMS: Rinoa (I don't have a Rod! I have... a boomerang bird thingie?!)
SAD: Selphie (I LIKE TRAAAINS!!!!!)
BP: (Honorary) Quistis. (Not really big Polyes, but more of 'Naughty Teachers with a whip)
FFX
PMS: Yuna. (Duh.)
SAD: Lulu. (Duh^2)
BP: Rikku (Disasteriffic!)
So well... damn you, squaresoft! I didn't mind Lulu. She actually had vague personality. Rikku was.. tolerable. Same with Quistis. But uugggh at the rest!

Eh...Rikku was far, far more spastic than Lulu, Nep.

And at least Lulu never really had to move. When you're a spellcaster, you can afford to have huge....tracts of land! Imagining Tifa kickboxing....well, that's another story.

Yeah, but when Cyan first sees her, his first words are : "That's General Celes! She's the one who torched Miranda!", or something along those lines, which is probably what Gil referred to.Mayabird wrote:I thought Celes had been imprisoned for refusing to carry out nasty orders from Kefka or something along those lines.
