Favorite rap type and artists?

Post by Castor Troy »

Like the title says: what's your favorite type of rap? Who's your favorite artist(s)?

As for me, I enjoy good old school gangsta rap. My favorite artists are NWA, Dr. Dre, Public Enemy, Geto Boys, Eazy E, and Tupac. A lot of Compton early 90's style rap as well.

I certainly don't mind a bit of Run-DMC or Will Smith every now and then.

EDIT: I have no idea how to classify rap, so the type thing is out for me.

Type: Silent, off, or outside audible range.

Artist: Is there a dead one that's not still making albums? If so, it would be that guy.

Molotov.

Type? Um, anything that doesn't suck. Definitely all those "i'm gonna cap your ass bitch, i'm a cool cocaine dealer" are out.

Basically, I dislike rap except VERY few exceptions. I don't think of it as music at all, more like angry shouting.

Run DMC, Beasite Boys, Public Enemy, Living Colour and to some extent NWA.

Aussie hip-hop is getting pretty damn good though, 1200 Techniques, Hilltop Hoods, Gerling and Regurgitator are all awesome.

And Russian/ex-soviet bloc rap. Because blasting everyone (police, civilians, chechens and the military) with AK's has more cred than 50cent can ever hope to have.

I like Eminem, some Will Smith. That's about it though.

Not a huge fan of rap in general, but I love the Hilltop Hoods. In my less than humble opinion, they are the only Australian Hip Hop outfit who don't deserve to be roasted on a spit.

"Dumb Enough" is a particular favourite of mine, as even though it's really about rappers, it reminds me of the two ocasions when I have participated in open mic night at the Sitdown Comedy Club...

So step on up if you’re dumb enough...
After all, this is completely straightforward. What could possibly go wrong?

THIS LOOKS LIKE A JOB FOR EMERGENCY PANTS!

I hate Matt Damon and there's not a damn thing you can do about it

No, I'm not on drugs. I'm like this all the time.

Eminem is pretty talented and worth a listen to. I get a kick out of the NWA (Niggas With Attitude). Some of Tupac Shakur's stuff is not bad, either.

Still, if you're new to rap and looking to try an album, you HAVE to pick up Dr. Dre's "The Chronic". It's just an awesome rap record from start to finish.

Man, my favorites run all across the board.

Ludacris
Wu-Tang Clan
A Tribe Called Quest
The Notorious B.I.G.
De La Soul
L.L. Cool J

I especially like the Old-school stuff, but some of the early Gangsta rap has started to grow on me for some reason.

The only rap I ever gave a damn about was Gangsta Paradise, thanks to Wierd Al, and that new track that came out that's basically a rap tweak of Crazy Train.

Those two seperate, the rest of the genre can kindly sod off.
This has been another blunder by you friendly local idiot.

In general? None whatsoever. There are exceptions, but those are made on a song-by-song basis.

Very little. I do like Run DMC, some Eminem (then again, my mother likes more of his stuff than I do...), a little Will Smith, and rarely Beastie Boys. I prefer the rap where I can actually understand the lyrics, which eliminates a lot of it (and I don't mean comprehend the lyrics, I mean actually being able to tell what the words are).

I'm not really into rap. I don't mind some of the pop-rap or trip-hop, but its not really for the rap, it's usually for the dance or techno beat.

The only rap I might enjoy listening to would be stuff from Wu Tang Clan and it's members, Cypress Hill, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog, Beastie Boys, and The Goats that came out in the '90s.

Because "rap" nowadays is about the artist saying "yeah" and "uh-huh" while other people perform the song (set to a 'remix' of an older song from another genre), I define good rap as hip-hop.

Play me stuff from the 80s and 90s. The only two rappers from the new millenium I've found to be entertaining are Eminem and Jay-Z, and they are hit and miss.

If i had to pick i'd chose Jay Z. Any man banging Beyonce deserves respect, I loved his album with Linkin Park.

Anything that came before 1995 and parts of 96, I would consider to be generally good rap music. Better than anything currently. (including Eminem)
