My good man that is now no longer the case.

Monterey Bay Aquarium managed to keep their Great White alive and healthy for a record of 198 days, releasing the shark back into the wild after she killed two of her tankmates and began exhibiting clear hunting behavior. Monterey Bay started a 3 year program of Great White research prior to this and it culminated with the capture of a 4 foot juvenile Great White off the coast of Southern Calfiornia (Huntington Beach).

It is now no longer the question of wether or not a Great White can be kept in activity, but a matter of can anyone design a proper exhibit for it.

A previous incident of Great Whites in captivity involve a shark which seemed to be disoriented in the tank, and acting all funny. All sharks have what is called an Ampullae of Lorenzini in their heads, allowing them to sense electrical currents. What happened in this case every "read about somewhere" was that the tank was not properly insulated, and electric current was running into the water, playing havoc with the sharks senses akin to that of an inner ear infection.

Somehow, feathers on a dinosaur make them even scarier looking. Well, that's not counting the little flying ones with beaks and pretty songs.

Conventional reconstructions of theropods are really just big reptiles. Granted, no living reptile looks or moves like a theropod, but there are modern anologues that generate a comfortable familiarity. Yes, they're scary, but they're still just ordinary animals.

Feathered theropods are a unique monster, almost mythical or alien. Dromaeosaurids and their ilk are plumed, demonic serpents from Hell. They are creatures for which there is no modern anologue and shatter all of our comfy preconceptions about what dinosaurs and birds are supposed to be.

When she returned from the Galapagos with photos, a good portion of the straight male population stampeded into her thread entitled "Boobies" and were disappointed to find... Boobies.

I like two of the frog pictures: the first one, with the little green frog in the water, who looks like he's chilling out; and another one further down, which has a frog with an oh-so-serious expression on his face, and it looks like he's scowling at the camera (he's looking directing at it).

Frogs are cool.

They were named boobies by some of the first sailors to reach the Galapagos Islands. The wildlife on the Galapagos have no fear of humans (still don't, in fact), so they'd walk right up to the sailors, and the sailors could just club them in large numbers because the birds wouldn't flee. The sailors called them "boobies" because they were stupid boobs.

Your useless information for the day.
